SDR jobs · permanent, contract and fractional

SDR jobs are sales development representative roles: the first seat in a B2B sales team, finding and qualifying new prospects by phone, email and LinkedIn and booking meetings for the account executives who close. Most are permanent, full-time posts with a base salary and commission; some are contract or fractional. The board below shows the SDR roles on our board, permanent roles first where the posting says full-time.

We recruit SDRs and BDRs, and the sales leaders they report to, on permanent, contract, fractional and part-time terms. Hiring rather than looking? On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role

What is an SDR? the role, and SDR vs BDR

An SDR, or sales development representative, is a salesperson whose job is to start sales conversations rather than close them. The SDR researches target accounts, contacts prospects by phone, email and LinkedIn, follows up inbound interest, qualifies whether there is a real need and budget, and books a meeting for an account executive. An SDR is measured on meetings booked and the pipeline those meetings create, not on revenue closed.

The work sits inside the sales executive apprenticeship standard, which lists generating new business by contacting prospective customers and qualifying opportunities, and names business development executive among its typical job titles. SDRs usually report to a sales development manager or a head of sales; in some companies they sit in marketing.

SDR vs BDR

Many companies use SDR and BDR (business development representative) for the same job. Where they split the titles, the SDR usually works inbound interest, such as demo requests and event leads, and the BDR works outbound, choosing accounts and starting cold. Read the job description, not the letters. For the outbound seat, see BDR jobs; for it part of the week, fractional BDR jobs.

The rules the seat works under

Cold calls and cold emails are direct marketing. The ICO’s guidance on business-to-business marketing explains how the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations apply to calls and emails to businesses, and that UK GDPR applies to a business contact’s personal data. Companies making unsolicited sales calls must screen their lists against the Telephone Preference Service. A good SDR team trains on both in week one.

02/ scope

How to become an SDR

1. No degree required

The SDR seat is the usual entry point to B2B sales, and employers hire on communication, resilience and curiosity more than on qualifications. The National Careers Service notes there are no formal entry requirements for business development work and lists routes through university, college, apprenticeships or starting in a sales role and moving up.

2. Take a structured route if you want one

The sales executive apprenticeship trains the full sales cycle from prospecting to close. The business to business sales professional degree apprenticeship is a Level 6 route that covers prospecting, qualification and pipeline management. The Institute of Sales Professionals is the profession’s membership body and runs sales qualifications.

3. Know where the seat leads

The usual next step is account executive, then team lead or sales development manager, then fractional head of sales jobs and the senior seats above. The Bridge Group’s 2025 survey puts average SDR tenure at 1.9 years (The Bridge Group). Its sample is 351 B2B companies, 78% based in North America, so read it as a direction, not a UK rule.

SDR jobs: what the board holds

SDR jobs on this page are the sales development roles on our board, from first SDR in a seed-stage start-up to a seat in a large sales development team. Roles whose posting says full-time come first; interim, part-time and fractional roles follow under their own labels. When there are few, the board widens to the go-to-market roles around the seat, founding GTM lead and GTM engineer, and says that it has.

Looking for SDR jobs in London? Each listing shows the location the employer’s posting gives, so you can see at a glance which roles are London-based. Open the posting for the working pattern and the office days before you apply.

For every go-to-market role on the board, see GTM jobs; for the team that trains SDRs, sales enablement jobs.

06/ sales development representative jobs

Sales development representative jobs: reading the posting

Sales development representative jobs are advertised as SDR, BDR, business development executive, lead generation executive or outbound sales representative. The title matters less than four lines in the posting: inbound or outbound, the target (meetings booked or pipeline created), who the seat reports to, and how commission is paid.

Ask how commission works before you accept. Acas explains that an employee’s entitlement to commission should be in their written statement of employment particulars, and that commission counts towards the National Minimum Wage, with the employer topping up pay if it falls short. Your employer must give you a written statement on your first day.

Some sales development representative jobs are contract or fractional. If you work through your own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply: status turns on how the engagement runs, and a medium or large client makes the determination. Our fractional SDR page sets out how part-week sales development works.

07/ sdr salary

SDR salary: base, commission and ramp

An SDR salary is quoted as a base plus commission, and the posting usually gives OTE (on-target earnings: base plus commission at target). Read the split as well as the total: a low base with a high OTE puts more of the pay on meetings booked or pipeline created. We publish no SDR pay figure until we hold a pay survey we can cite; each role on the board shows the pay its posting states.

New SDRs are not expected to hit target in week one. The Bridge Group’s 2025 survey of 351 B2B companies puts average SDR ramp time at 3.0 months, the lowest since 2010 (The Bridge Group). Its sample is 78% North American, so ask each employer what its own ramp and its first-quarter target look like.

Contract and fractional SDR pay is quoted by the day; see fractional SDR jobs.

On this page: the board shows the SDR roles on our board, permanent roles first where the posting says full-time, then interim, part-time and fractional. For the outbound seat, see BDR jobs; for every go-to-market role, GTM jobs.
A sales development representative: the salesperson who finds and qualifies new prospects, by phone, email and LinkedIn, and books meetings for the account executives who close. An SDR is measured on meetings and pipeline, not on revenue closed.
Often nothing: many companies use both titles for one job. Where they split them, the SDR usually works inbound interest and the BDR works outbound. See BDR jobs.
Entry-level B2B sales roles that start sales conversations: researching accounts, contacting prospects, qualifying need and booking meetings. They are advertised as SDR, BDR, business development executive or lead generation executive.
A base salary plus commission, quoted as OTE (on-target earnings). Commission is usually paid on meetings booked or pipeline created. We publish no SDR pay figure until we hold a pay survey we can cite; each role on the board shows the pay its posting states.
Apply directly: there are no formal entry requirements, and employers hire on communication, resilience and curiosity. A sales executive apprenticeship or a business to business sales degree apprenticeship is a structured route. Learn the basics of PECR and the Telephone Preference Service before your first interview.
The board shows each SDR role’s location as the employer’s posting gives it, so London-based roles are easy to spot. Open the posting for the working pattern and office days before you apply.
Write down whether the seat is inbound or outbound, the target, the commission plan and who the SDR reports to. To hire a fractional SDR, start with that page. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting.
