GTM jobs · every go-to-market role, and how to hire one

GTM jobs are the go-to-market roles that find, win and keep customers: SDR and BDR, GTM engineer, RevOps, head of growth, GTM lead or head of GTM, founding GTM lead, sales director and CRO. Each can be hired fractional, interim, as a consultant or advisor, or permanent. This page maps the ladder and links the page for every role.

We place GTM people in all five modes, and we can put a senior GTM lead into the work directly. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live go-to-market roles are on the board below.

Live go-to-market roles

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a GTM brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

GTM jobs: the go-to-market ladder, rung by rung

Go-to-market is everything between a product and a paying customer: who you sell to, the message, the channels, the pipeline, the sales process and the renewal. GTM jobs split that work into seats. Read the ladder from the bottom: each rung below owns less of the number and more of the doing.

SDR and BDR

Sales and business development representatives book the first meetings. They research accounts, call, email and message prospects, and hand qualified conversations to a seller. It is the entry rung, and the one most often bought part-time or as a service. See fractional SDR jobs.

GTM engineer

The builder under the plan: account data, enrichment, signal capture, lead routing and automated outbound. A GTM engineer writes the systems the sellers run on. See GTM engineer jobs, or read what a GTM engineer does.

RevOps

Revenue operations owns the CRM, the pipeline stages, the forecast mechanics and the reporting that sales, marketing and customer success share. Where the GTM engineer builds new machinery, RevOps keeps the whole engine honest. See fractional RevOps jobs.

Head of growth

A head of growth runs experiments across acquisition, activation and retention, usually in a product-led business. Kyle Poyar of Growth Unhinged argues a head of growth is most effective at scaling a company that already has product-market fit, rather than building one from zero. See fractional head of growth jobs.

GTM lead and head of GTM

One senior person who owns the whole go-to-market motion across sales, marketing and customer success, and answers for the pipeline number. Head of GTM is the same seat under a more senior title. See GTM lead jobs.

Founding GTM lead

The first dedicated commercial hire at an early-stage company, taking over from founder-led selling. Stage 2 Capital makes the point that this first hire is not always a seller: sometimes it is a marketer, sometimes someone in customer success. See founding GTM lead.

Head of sales and sales director

Sales leadership proper. A head of sales usually builds and runs the first team; a sales director owns the whole sales function, the targets and the forecast. See fractional head of sales jobs and fractional sales director jobs.

CRO

The chief revenue officer owns every revenue line: sales, marketing, customer success and often pricing, and sits with the CEO and the board. For a permanent board-level appointment, see CRO recruitment; for part of the week, fractional CRO jobs.

02/ scope

How to hire a GTM team

1. Name the gap, not the title

Write down what is not working. No pipeline. Pipeline that stalls. A founder who still closes every deal. Data nobody trusts. A market you have not entered. Each points to a different rung. Only then decide how many days a week you can fund.

2. Lead first, team second

To hire a GTM team that pulls one way, put the owner of the number in first: a GTM lead, a head of sales or, at an early company, a founding GTM lead. That person then shapes the SDR, GTM engineer and RevOps seats underneath. A team hired before its lead tends to build three different plans.

3. Choose the mode for each seat

The modes mix. A common shape is a fractional lead, a GTM engineer for the build, and SDR capacity bought part-time. If the plan itself is the question, start with a GTM consultant or a piece of go-to-market strategy work and hire the seats afterwards.

4. Test the work

Give candidates your real pipeline, your CRM and your last quarter, and ask what they would change in the first month. For sellers, membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals is one signal among several; for marketers, the Chartered Institute of Marketing sets the professional standard. Take references from people who worked beside them, not only above.

What we do on a GTM brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives, and non-executive directors. Where the brief needs a senior GTM lead in the work straight away, we can put one on it.

05/ go to market jobs

Go-to-market jobs: moving up or across the ladder

Go-to-market jobs reward range. The people who reach the top rungs have usually held two or three of the seats below: an SDR who became a seller and then ran a team, a marketer who took on RevOps, an operator who became a GTM engineer. Hirers read that range as proof you can own the whole motion rather than one part of it.

If you are looking for a first senior role, the fractional and interim modes are a practical way in. A company that cannot yet fund a full-time head of GTM will often buy two or three days a week, and interim GTM jobs cover empty seats and launches full-time for a fixed term. Both build the record a permanent board-level role asks for.

Professional bodies help at the edges. The Institute of Sales Professionals runs sales qualifications and membership; the Chartered Institute of Marketing offers qualifications and Chartered Marketer status. Neither replaces a record of pipeline built and customers kept, which is what a hirer will ask about first. Live go-to-market jobs are on the board on this page.

06/ gtm roles

GTM roles: which one does the work you need

GTM roles overlap, so match the role to the problem. Not enough first meetings: SDR capacity. Leads that go nowhere, or data that cannot be trusted: a GTM engineer or RevOps. A product-led funnel that leaks: a head of growth. Nobody owns the plan across sales and marketing: a GTM lead. A founder still doing all the selling: a founding GTM lead. A sales team that misses target: a head of sales or sales director. Revenue teams pulling in different directions: a CRO.

Some GTM roles are not seats at all. A GTM advisor gives a founder a few hours of senior counsel a month. A GTM consultant answers one defined question, such as positioning or a new market, and hands the answer over. Fractional GTM puts a leader inside the business on agreed days, held to the number.

If you want to go deep on the plan itself before choosing anyone, our sister site gtm.quest covers go-to-market strategy in detail, and our go-to-market strategy page sets out who should own it.

07/ contracts

Contracts, IR35 and outbound rules for every GTM hire

A fractional or interim GTM hire is either employed or works through their own limited company. Where the person works through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply.

A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, so write down control, substitution and the days, then run it that way. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

Most GTM seats touch outbound. The ICO’s business-to-business marketing guidance explains that UK GDPR applies to a named business contact’s personal data, and that sole traders and some partnerships are treated as individuals under PECR. Anyone building outbound, from an SDR to a GTM engineer, should be able to show how they handle it.

GTM jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a go-to-market leader.

The go-to-market roles that find, win and keep customers: SDR and BDR, GTM engineer, RevOps, head of growth, GTM lead or head of GTM, founding GTM lead, head of sales, sales director and CRO. Each can be filled fractional, interim, by a consultant or advisor, or permanently.

Live go-to-market jobs are on the board on this page, with the fractional, interim and permanent roles we can see. Each role page in the cluster carries its own board, from fractional SDR jobs to GTM lead jobs.

From the bottom of the ladder: SDR or BDR, GTM engineer, RevOps, head of growth, GTM lead or head of GTM, founding GTM lead, head of sales, sales director and CRO. The lower rungs do more of the work; the upper rungs own more of the number.

Name the gap first, then hire the person who will own the number before the team under them. Choose a mode for each seat (fractional, interim, consultant, advisor or permanent), test candidates on your own pipeline and CRM, and settle IR35 before the start date. We send a shortlist of 3–5 for each seat.

It depends on the seats, the days and the mode. For fractional and interim seats the cost is the day rate times the days worked; for permanent seats it is salary plus employer costs. We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist. The role pages, such as fractional sales director jobs, carry sourced pay where a source exists.

Fractional if the work does not fill a week but needs an owner. Interim if a seat is empty and needs someone every day for a fixed term. A consultant for one defined question. An advisor for a few hours of counsel a month. Permanent once the playbook is proven and the work fills the week.

A founding GTM lead is the first dedicated commercial hire at an early-stage company, taking over from founder-led selling. A GTM lead or head of GTM owns the go-to-market motion at a company that already has some sales, marketing or customer success in place. See founding GTM lead and GTM lead jobs.

No, though they overlap. A GTM engineer builds new go-to-market systems: enrichment, signals, routing and automated outbound. RevOps runs the CRM, pipeline stages, forecast and reporting the revenue teams share. See GTM engineer jobs and fractional RevOps jobs.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
