GTM director jobs · hire a GTM director or go-to-market director, fractional or permanent

GTM director jobs are senior go-to-market roles: the GTM director owns go-to-market strategy and operations across sales, marketing and customer success, setting the plan, the process and the numbers each team works to, usually at a company large enough to have a head of each. To hire a GTM director, decide first whether the seat owns revenue or the system that produces it.

We place GTM directors fractional, interim and permanent, and we can put a senior GTM lead into the work directly. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live revenue leadership roles are on the board below.

Live revenue leadership roles

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a GTM director brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

GTM director: the meaning, and where the seat sits

A GTM director is the senior leader who owns how a company goes to market across functions: the ideal customer, the segments, the motion, the process from first touch to renewal, and the operations and data under it. That is the GTM director meaning. GTM stands for go-to-market, so a go-to-market director is the same job.

The seat is an architect more than a team captain. A head of sales runs sellers; a head of marketing runs campaigns. A GTM director makes the pieces fit: which markets to enter and in what order, how territories and handoffs work, what the forecast is built on, and which systems everyone shares. At some companies the heads of sales, marketing and customer success report in; at others they report elsewhere and the GTM director owns the plan they all work to.

Where the seat sits on the ladder

From the bottom: a GTM specialist or GTM manager; a GTM lead or founding GTM lead; a head of GTM; then the GTM director, the rung US companies usually call VP GTM; then the CRO. In a UK ladder “Head of” normally sits a rung below “Director”. Small companies skip rungs. The whole ladder is on our GTM jobs hub.

02/ scope

How to hire a GTM director

1. Decide what the seat owns

Two different jobs share the title. One owns the go-to-market system: strategy, process, RevOps, sales enablement and the data, with the revenue number sitting with a sales leader or CRO. The other owns the number too, with sales, marketing and customer success reporting in. Write down which you are hiring before you write the advert.

2. Choose fractional, interim or permanent

A go-to-market director on agreed days, as fractional GTM, suits a company that needs the architecture set and the teams to run it. If a senior seat is empty or a market launch needs someone every day, look at interim GTM jobs. Hire permanent once the system has to be run and improved every week.

3. Test the architecture

Give candidates your funnel by stage, your territory plan and your last forecast, and ask where it breaks and what they would change first. A strong GTM director will ask about data and handoffs before campaigns. Take references from a sales leader and a marketing leader they worked beside. Membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals is one signal among several.

4. Settle the title and the terms

Agree the days, what the GTM director can sign off alone, the outcomes for the first two quarters, and whether “director” is a job title or a board seat (below). If they work through their own company, check IR35 before the start date.

What we do on a GTM director brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives, and non-executive directors. Where the work cannot wait for a search, we can put a senior GTM lead on it directly.

GTM director jobs: who hires one, and how to read the advert

GTM director jobs tend to appear at companies with several go-to-market teams and more than one market or product: a scale-up adding a second segment, a business expanding abroad, an established company whose sales, marketing and customer success teams work to different plans.

Read the advert for the number. If the GTM director carries a revenue target and the heads of sales and marketing report in, it is a revenue leadership job close to a CRO. If the advert talks about process, territories, tooling, forecasting and enablement, it is the systems job, and a sales leader or CRO owns the target. Both are real; they suit different people.

Candidates who get these roles have usually run sales or marketing and then taken on operations, or come up through RevOps and then led people. If you want the strategy side in depth before you apply or hire, our sister site gtm.quest covers go-to-market strategy, and our go-to-market strategy page sets out who should own it. 06/ vp gtm

VP GTM: the vice president of go-to-market, and the UK equivalent

A VP GTM, or VP of go-to-market, is the same architect seat on a US career ladder. US companies have a vice president tier between director and the C-suite that most UK companies do not, so where a US company says VP GTM, a UK company usually says GTM director. The job is the same: strategy, process and operations across sales, marketing and customer success, reporting to the CEO or CRO. That is our reading of how the titles are used; no published standard defines them.

UK companies use the VP title when they sell into the US, report to US investors, or hire into a US-headed team, so that the title reads at the right height on both sides of the Atlantic. A UK candidate should read a US VP GTM role as director level or above; a US candidate should not read a UK “head of GTM” as the same altitude. The sales-only version of the seat is covered on fractional sales director jobs, which includes the fractional VP of sales.

07/ gtm director vs cro

GTM director vs CRO: who owns the number

The difference is the revenue number and the board. A CRO owns every revenue line, including pricing, renewals and expansion, and sits with the CEO and the board. A GTM director owns how the company goes to market: the segments, the process, the operations under it. At scale the GTM director often reports to the CRO. At a scale-up without a CRO, a GTM director who carries the number is doing much of the CRO job under a smaller title. To hire the board-level owner of the number, see CRO recruitment.

Pay follows the same line. No published UK survey reports pay under the title GTM director; the Ravio and Erevena European Executive Salary Survey 2026 has no GTM line at all. For the CRO it gives a P75 base of £263,690 across European tech, falling to £191,200 at companies under $10m ARR. The nearest adjacent UK title below is the sales director: IT Jobs Watch puts the median advertised salary at £100,000, from IT-sector permanent job ads. Those are adjacent titles, not GTM director pay.

08/ contracts

The word “director”, and IR35 for a GTM director

In the UK, “director” can be a job title or a legal office. Under section 250 of the Companies Act 2006, a director includes any person occupying the position of director, by whatever name called. A GTM director who is not on the board holds a title; one who is, or who acts as one, takes on the seven general duties of a company director. Write down which it is before the offer, especially where equity is part of it.

A fractional or interim GTM director either is employed or works through their own limited company. Where they work through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. A medium or large client makes the status determination; HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. For a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

GTM director jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a GTM director.

A GTM director is the senior leader who owns how a company goes to market across functions: the ideal customer, the segments, the motion, the process from first touch to renewal, and the operations under it. GTM stands for go-to-market, so a go-to-market director is the same job.

Senior go-to-market roles, fractional, interim or permanent, at companies with several go-to-market teams. Some own the revenue number with sales, marketing and customer success reporting in; others own the strategy, process and operations while a sales leader or CRO owns the number. Live GTM director jobs are on the board on this page.

Decide whether the seat owns the revenue number or the system behind it, then choose fractional, interim or permanent. Test candidates on your own funnel, territory plan and forecast, take references from a sales and a marketing leader they worked beside, and settle IR35 and the meaning of “director” in writing. We send a shortlist of 3–5.

We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist; a fractional GTM director costs the day rate times the days worked. No published UK survey reports pay under the title. The nearest adjacent title is the sales director, with a median advertised salary of £100,000 (IT Jobs Watch, IT-sector job ads).

The same seat as a GTM director, under its long name: the leader who owns go-to-market strategy and operations across sales, marketing and customer success. Hire one when those teams work to different plans and nobody below the CEO owns how they fit.

A vice president of go-to-market: the US name for the GTM director seat. US ladders have a VP tier that most UK companies lack, so a VP GTM in the US is usually a GTM director in the UK. UK companies use the VP title when they sell into the US or report to US investors.

The revenue number and the board. A CRO owns every revenue line, including pricing and renewals, and sits with the CEO and the board. A GTM director owns go-to-market strategy, process and operations, and at scale often reports to the CRO. See CRO recruitment.

In a UK ladder, usually yes: “Head of” sits a rung below “Director”. A head of GTM leads the go-to-market teams; a GTM director owns strategy and operations across them, often at a larger company. See head of GTM jobs.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
