GTM engineer · the role

What does a GTM engineer do?

The short answer · updated

A GTM (go-to-market) engineer builds and runs the systems behind a company’s outbound and revenue: enriching account and contact data, scoring and routing leads, automating outreach sequences and keeping the CRM connected. They turn a sales process into repeatable, automated workflows, working between sales, marketing and operations, often in a founding GTM team.

What is a GTM engineer

GTM stands for go-to-market: everything a company does to find customers, reach them and win them. A GTM engineer is the person who builds the machinery for that. Where a salesperson has conversations, the GTM engineer builds the systems that decide who to talk to, when, and with what message.

The role mixes sales knowledge with technical skill. A GTM engineer understands the ideal customer, the buying signals and the sales process, and can connect enrichment and sequencing tools, the CRM and internal data into workflows that run without manual effort. Many write scripts or use the tools’ APIs to do it.

The title is newer than the work. Similar jobs are advertised as growth engineer, outbound engineer or revenue systems lead. Our founding GTM lead page explains how GTM titles are used and what the prefix signals.

What a GTM engineer does day to day

The work varies with the company, but it usually covers:

  • Data enrichment: building and refreshing lists of target accounts and contacts, and adding the firmographic and contact data the team needs.
  • Signals and scoring: spotting buying signals, such as hiring, funding or product usage, and scoring accounts and leads so the team works the best ones first.
  • Sequencing: setting up outreach sequences across email and other channels, with the targeting and personalisation that makes them relevant.
  • CRM automation: routing leads, creating and updating records, and keeping the CRM accurate without manual entry.
  • Measurement: tracking what converts, testing changes and reporting results to the sales leader.

GTM engineer vs RevOps vs SDR

The three roles work closely together and are often confused.

  • GTM engineer: builds new systems and automated workflows that create pipeline: enrichment, signals, scoring and sequencing. The focus is on building and testing.
  • Revenue operations (RevOps): runs the operating system of the revenue team: CRM administration, forecasting, reporting, territories, process and often commission. The focus is on reliability and planning across sales, marketing and customer success.
  • Sales development representative (SDR): prospects and books meetings, working the lists and sequences the systems produce. The focus is on conversations. See fractional SDR.

Where a GTM engineer sits in the team

In an early company, a GTM engineer is often one of the first revenue hires, part of a founding GTM team alongside the founder, a first account executive and perhaps an SDR. They usually report to the founder, the head of sales or the chief revenue officer.

In a larger company, the role sits within sales, growth or revenue operations, working with marketing on targeting and with RevOps on the CRM. The fractional GTM page covers how companies build that team.

Whatever the structure, a GTM engineer handles personal data. The UK GDPR applies to business contacts’ personal data, even when it is publicly available, and PECR sets rules for marketing emails, as the ICO’s guidance on business-to-business marketing explains. Emails to sole traders and some partnerships follow the rules for individuals, and every message must identify the sender and offer a way to opt out, as the ICO’s electronic mail guidance sets out.

What skills a GTM engineer needs

The sales side comes first: understanding buyers, qualification and the sales process. The Institute of Sales Professionals’ Sales Capability Framework sets out the knowledge, skills, behaviours and tools behind effective and ethical selling, and is a useful reference for the sales half of the role.

The technical side covers data handling, working with APIs and spreadsheets or databases, building automations and, often, some scripting. Just as important is judgement: knowing when automation helps and when it produces volume nobody wants.

The ISP’s code of conduct asks sales professionals to behave with integrity and act lawfully. For a GTM engineer that means outreach that is accurate, relevant and compliant, not simply more of it.

How to hire a GTM engineer, fractionally or permanently

Start with the problem: not enough pipeline, poor targeting, a CRM nobody trusts, or a sales team spending its time on research instead of selling. That tells you whether you need a GTM engineer, a RevOps lead, an SDR or a sales leader, and how many days the work needs.

A fractional GTM engineer suits a company that needs the systems built and tuned but not a full-time owner yet. They usually work on a contract for services and invoice for the days, as GOV.UK’s guidance on self-employment describes. Where they work through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply: status depends on how the engagement runs, and a medium or large client makes the determination. HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

A permanent hire suits a company whose outbound is central to growth. Either way, the GTM engineer needs a clear owner: a head of sales or a chief revenue officer. To hire a GTM engineer through us, send the brief. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate or pay, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting.

Questions people ask

What is a GTM engineer?

A go-to-market engineer: the person who builds the systems behind outbound and revenue, such as data enrichment, lead scoring, outreach sequencing and CRM automation.

What does GTM stand for?

Go-to-market: how a company finds, reaches and wins customers. It covers sales, marketing and the operations that connect them.

Is a GTM engineer a software engineer?

Not usually. Many write scripts and work with APIs, but the job is building revenue workflows with enrichment and sequencing tools and the CRM, not building the company’s product.

What is the difference between a GTM engineer and RevOps?

A GTM engineer builds new systems that create pipeline. RevOps runs the revenue team’s operations: CRM administration, forecasting, reporting, territories and process. In small companies one person may do both.

What is the difference between a GTM engineer and an SDR?

An SDR prospects and books meetings. A GTM engineer builds the lists, signals and sequences the SDR works from. See fractional SDR jobs.

Who does a GTM engineer report to?

Usually the founder, the head of sales or the chief revenue officer. See fractional CRO jobs and founding GTM lead.

Can a GTM engineer work fractionally?

Yes. Many companies need the systems built and tuned for part of the week rather than a full-time owner. The days are agreed in the contract and change as the work does. See fractional GTM.

How do I hire a GTM engineer?

Define the problem, the days and who the engineer reports to, then send us the brief. The shortlist of 3–5 sets out day rate or pay, availability and IR35 position. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent hires.
