GTM manager jobs · hire a go-to-market manager, fractional or permanent

GTM manager jobs are hands-on go-to-market roles. The go-to-market manager runs launches, positioning and sales enablement for one product or segment, so that sales, marketing and customer success tell the same story. Many of these jobs sit in product marketing. To hire a GTM manager, first name the launch or segment they will own.

A note on the name: “GTM manager” also names Google Tag Manager work. This page is about the go-to-market role.

We place go-to-market people at every level, from GTM managers up to CROs, fractional, interim and permanent. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? 01/ the role

GTM manager jobs: what the seat is, and where it sits

A GTM manager, or go-to-market manager, turns a go-to-market plan into work that ships. The plan says who to sell to and why. The GTM manager writes the positioning and messaging, runs the launch calendar, builds the pitch, battlecards and training that sellers use, and reports on what landed. The scope is usually one product, one segment or one region, not the whole company.

An individual contributor or first-line manager

Be clear about the level. A GTM manager is usually an individual contributor, or manages one or two people. The title does not mean head of a department. On the go-to-market ladder it shares the first rung with the GTM specialist. Above it sit a GTM lead or founding GTM lead, then a head of GTM, then a GTM director or VP GTM, and at the top a CRO. The full map is on our GTM jobs hub.

What GTM manager jobs pay

We quote no market figure for the title. Pay follows the scope: a GTM manager who runs launches across several product lines is a different hire from one who supports a single segment. We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist, so both sides price the seat against the real work.

02/ scope

How to hire a GTM manager

1. Name the launch or segment

Write down what the GTM manager will own in the first two quarters. That might be a product launch, a new segment, a repositioning, or enablement for a sales team that cannot explain the product. Without a named launch or segment, the role becomes a spare pair of hands for three departments.

2. Put an owner above the seat

A GTM manager runs a plan; someone else has to own it. If nobody does, fix that first. Hire a GTM lead or a head of GTM to own the plan and the number, or start with a piece of go-to-market strategy work. We can put a senior GTM lead on it directly, with the GTM manager working underneath.

3. Choose the mode

A single launch with a fixed date suits a part-week or fixed-term hire: see fractional GTM and interim GTM jobs. A launch calendar that runs every quarter needs a permanent GTM manager. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives and the go-to-market seats under them, and non-executive directors.

4. Test the work

Give finalists a real product and a real buyer. Ask for a positioning statement, a launch plan and the one page a seller would use on a call, then ask two of your sellers to judge that page. Membership of the Chartered Institute of Marketing or the Institute of Sales Professionals is one signal among several. A launch they can walk you through, start to finish, is a better one.

05/ go to market manager jobs

Go-to-market manager jobs: launches, positioning and enablement

Go-to-market manager jobs are often product marketing jobs under another name. The adverts cluster around three pieces of work. Launches: the plan, the dates, the owners across product, marketing, sales and customer success, and the review afterwards. Positioning: who the product is for, the problem it solves and why it beats the alternative, written down so every team uses the same words. Enablement: the pitch, the battlecards, the demo story and the training that put the message in sellers’ hands.

The mix varies by company. In a product-led business the go-to-market manager may sit in growth and own onboarding and in-product messaging, closer to a head of growth. In a sales-led business the role leans towards enablement and overlaps with sales enablement. Read the responsibilities, not the title, before you apply or write the advert.

Candidates who read strongest have shipped launches and can show what sellers did differently afterwards. If you want the strategy the role carries out in depth, our sister site gtm.quest covers go-to-market strategy. Live go-to-market roles are on the board on this page.

06/ gtm manager vs product marketing manager

GTM manager vs product marketing manager: where one ends and the other starts

A product marketing manager starts from the product and the buyer: research, positioning, messaging, competitor research and the launch content. A GTM manager starts from the go-to-market plan: getting the launch out of the door across every team, on time, in a form sales can use. One writes the story; the other makes sure the whole company tells it.

At a small company they are one job, and the title is a matter of taste. They split when there are several products or segments, or when the launch calendar is busy enough that co-ordination is a job in itself. If you can fund one seat, hire for the gap. If sellers cannot say why a buyer should choose you, the product marketing work comes first. If good messaging never reaches the field, the GTM manager work does.

Both seats answer to someone who owns the number. On the product side that may be a head of product; on the go-to-market side, a GTM lead or head of GTM. If the line between the two seats is unclear, a GTM consultant can draw it before you hire.

07/ launch claims and contracts

Launch claims, contracts and IR35 for a GTM manager

A GTM manager writes the claims buyers read, so they should know the rules. GOV.UK’s guide to marketing and advertising law says all marketing must be an accurate description of the product or service, legal, decent, truthful and honest. Section 3 of the CAP Code says marketing communications must not materially mislead, or omit material information.

Positioning against a named rival needs particular care. The ASA’s advice on comparisons with identifiable competitors explains that such comparisons must not mislead about either product, must compare products that meet the same need, and must be verifiable. Ask a GTM manager candidate how they checked the last competitive claim they published.

A GTM manager on a part-week or fixed-term engagement is either employed or works through their own limited company. In the second case the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

GTM manager jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a GTM manager.

Hands-on go-to-market roles in which one person runs launches, positioning and sales enablement for a product or segment, so that sales, marketing and customer success tell the same story. They are individual contributor or first-line manager seats, not executive ones. Live go-to-market roles are on the board on this page.

The same role as a GTM manager: GTM stands for go-to-market. A go-to-market manager takes the plan for who to sell to and why, and turns it into launches, messaging and the material sellers use. The plan itself is owned higher up, by a GTM lead or head of GTM.

Three pieces of work, in varying mixes. Launches: the plan, the dates and the owners across teams. Positioning: who the product is for and why it wins, written down once for everyone. Enablement: the pitch, battlecards and training for sellers. Many go-to-market manager jobs are product marketing jobs under another name.

Name the launch or segment they will own, make sure someone above them owns the plan and the number, then choose fractional, interim or permanent. Test finalists on a real product and buyer, and ask your sellers to judge their work. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

We quote no market figure for the title, because pay follows the scope of the launches and segments the role owns. We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist. For a fractional or interim GTM manager, the cost is the day rate times the days worked.

A product marketing manager starts from the product and the buyer and writes the positioning, messaging and launch content. A GTM manager starts from the go-to-market plan and gets each launch out across every team, in a form sales can use. At a small company one person often does both.

Not usually. It is an individual contributor or first-line manager seat, on the same rung as a GTM specialist. The senior go-to-market seats are GTM lead, head of GTM, GTM director and CRO. Some companies do use the title for a more senior job, so read the scope.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
