GTM specialist · hire a GTM specialist or go-to-market specialist

A GTM specialist is a hands-on go-to-market role: one person who does a defined part of the work of finding and winning customers, such as outbound prospecting, partner programmes, product launches or the tools behind them. It is an entry-to-mid seat, not a leadership one. To hire a GTM specialist, name which of those jobs you mean before you write the advert.

We place go-to-market people at every level, junior seats included, fractional, interim and permanent. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live go-to-market roles

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a GTM specialist brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

What is a GTM specialist? the go-to-market specialist, in one line

A GTM specialist, or go-to-market specialist, is an individual contributor who carries out one part of a go-to-market plan. Someone else decides who to sell to and why; the specialist does a named piece of the work, well and repeatedly. The word “specialist” is the point: the seat is defined by one skill, not by a team or a number.

The title is loose, and not only in software. The Skills England Level 4 sales executive apprenticeship standard lists “Sales Specialist” among the typical titles for a salesperson who sells a specific product line, qualifies opportunities and manages their own sales. In a B2B software company the same word more often means an outbound, partner, launch or tooling seat (below).

Where the seat sits on the ladder

The GTM specialist shares the first rung with the GTM manager. Above them sit a GTM lead or founding GTM lead, then a head of GTM, then a GTM director or VP GTM, and at the top a CRO. The full map is on our GTM jobs hub.

What GTM specialists are paid

We quote no market figure for the title, because it covers several different jobs and each pays differently. We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist, so the seat is priced against the work it actually does.

02/ scope

How to hire a GTM specialist

1. Name the specialism

Write down which job you mean: booking first meetings, running partners, shipping launches, or building and running the tools. Each needs a different person. An advert that asks for all four attracts generalists who do none of them for long.

2. Make sure someone owns the plan

A specialist does part of a plan; they should not have to write it. If nobody owns the go-to-market plan and the number, hire a GTM lead first, or bring in fractional GTM leadership for part of the week. We can put a senior GTM lead on the work directly, with the specialist working underneath.

3. Choose permanent, part-time or fixed-term

Steady work, such as outbound to a known market, suits a permanent or part-time seat. A one-off build or a single launch suits a fixed-term contract. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives and the go-to-market seats under them, and non-executive directors.

4. Test the one skill

Test the specialism, not the CV. An outbound specialist writes three first emails to a real account and makes a practice call. A launch specialist plans a launch on one page. A tooling specialist talks you through a workflow they built. The Institute of Sales Professionals and the Chartered Institute of Marketing both offer qualifications; treat them as one signal among several.

What we do on a GTM specialist brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting.

05/ gtm specialist jobs

GTM specialist jobs: four jobs under one title

GTM specialist jobs are adverts for at least four different seats, so read the duties before the title. Outbound specialist: researches accounts, writes and calls, and books first meetings for sellers. This is close to an SDR or BDR seat; see fractional SDR jobs, fractional BDR jobs and BDR jobs.

Partner specialist: recruits and supports resellers, referral partners or marketplace listings, and keeps their pipeline moving. Product launch specialist: runs the checklist behind each launch and the material sellers need, usually under a GTM manager or alongside sales enablement. GTM operations specialist: sets up and looks after the CRM and the sales tools, next to RevOps.

If you are applying, the outbound and operations versions are the most common ways into go-to-market work, and both lead up the ladder. If you want to hire one, pick one of the four and say so in the first line of the advert. For the plan the specialist works to, our sister site gtm.quest covers go-to-market strategy in depth. Live go-to-market roles are on the board on this page.

06/ gtm specialist vs gtm engineer

GTM specialist vs GTM engineer: doing the work, or building the machine

A GTM engineer builds systems: the enrichment, signals, scoring, routing and automated sequences that put accounts in front of sellers. A GTM specialist does a defined part of the work itself, often using those systems. The engineer’s output is a machine; the specialist’s output is meetings, partners, launches or a tidy CRM. See GTM engineer jobs, or read what a GTM engineer does.

The two meet at the GTM operations specialist, who sets up tools the engineer might otherwise build. The test is whether the seat creates new automation or runs what exists. If sellers spend their week finding and cleaning data, hire a GTM engineer. If the machine exists and nobody works the accounts it finds, hire a specialist.

In a small team one person often starts as a specialist and grows into the engineer seat. Say which you are hiring for now, and write the step up into the role if you mean it.

07/ outbound rules and contracts

Outbound rules, contracts and IR35 for a GTM specialist

Most GTM specialists touch outbound, so they should know the rules. The ICO’s business-to-business marketing guidance explains that PECR treats sole traders and some partnerships the same as individuals, and that UK GDPR applies to a named business contact’s personal data. Under the ICO’s electronic mail guidance, marketing emails and texts to individuals need specific consent or the soft opt-in, and every message must say who it is from and give a way to opt out.

A GTM specialist is most often employed. GOV.UK notes that a person may be an employee in employment law but have a different status for tax purposes, so write down how the seat will run. Where a specialist works through their own limited company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ questions

GTM specialist FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a GTM specialist.

An individual contributor who carries out one defined part of a go-to-market plan, such as outbound prospecting, partner programmes, product launches or the sales tools. Someone more senior owns the plan and the number; the specialist does a named piece of the work. It is an entry-to-mid seat.

The same role as a GTM specialist: GTM stands for go-to-market. Outside software the word is looser; the Skills England sales executive apprenticeship standard lists “Sales Specialist” as a typical title for a salesperson who sells a specific product line.

It depends on which of four seats the advert means. Outbound specialists book first meetings; partner specialists run resellers and referral partners; launch specialists run the checklist behind each launch; GTM operations specialists look after the CRM and sales tools. Read the duties before the title.

Name the specialism, make sure someone above the seat owns the plan and the number, then choose permanent, part-time or fixed-term. Test the one skill on real work, not the CV. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. To put a leader over the work, hire a GTM lead.

We quote no market figure for the title, because it covers several different jobs that pay differently. We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist. For a part-time or fixed-term specialist, the cost is the day rate times the days worked.

A GTM engineer builds the systems: enrichment, scoring, routing and automated outbound. A GTM specialist does a defined part of the work itself, often using those systems. Hire the engineer when sellers waste time finding data; hire the specialist when the accounts are found but nobody works them. See what a GTM engineer does.

Sometimes. An outbound GTM specialist does much the same work as an SDR or BDR: researching accounts and booking first meetings. Other GTM specialist jobs are partner, launch or operations seats. See fractional SDR jobs for the outbound seat.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
