GTM engineer jobs · hire a GTM engineer to build the revenue machine

GTM engineer jobs are technical go-to-market roles: the GTM engineer builds the systems that find buyers and put them in front of sales. That means data enrichment, lead scoring and routing, outbound sequencing, CRM automation and the reporting that shows what works. To hire a GTM engineer, write down what the machine must do first, then decide on part-time or full-time.

We place GTM people on fractional, interim, advisory, consulting and permanent terms, and we recruit part-time and temporary hires too. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live GTM engineer roles are on the board below.

01/ the role

GTM engineer jobs: what the role builds

A GTM engineer builds and runs the go-to-market machinery. The GTM lead decides who to sell to and why; the GTM engineer builds the pipes that find those accounts, enrich them with firmographic and contact data, score them, route them to the right seller and start the outbound sequence. They own the CRM automation behind it, the integrations between the sales and marketing tools, and the data that tells the board which segments convert. For the role in more depth, read what a GTM engineer does.

The work, in five parts

Enrichment: filling gaps in account and contact records from licensed data sources, and keeping them fresh. Signals: spotting the events that make an account worth a call now, such as a new senior appointment, a funding round or a visit to the pricing page. Scoring and routing: deciding which accounts reach a seller, and which seller. Sequencing: multi-step outbound across email, phone and social, with suppression and opt-outs built in. Data: the CRM architecture, the reporting and the clean-up that stops the database decaying.

What GTM engineer jobs pay

There is no UK salary benchmark for the title yet. The best published evidence is US-weighted: Bloomberry’s analysis of 1,000 GTM engineering job postings puts the median advertised salary at $127,500, from postings that published a range. The same analysis found SQL and Python each named in 38% of postings, so the role often expects code as well as tool configuration. Treat the dollar figure as US context, not a UK rate. We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist.

Where the GTM engineer sits in the GTM family

The GTM engineer is one seat in a wider team. Browse all GTM jobs and go-to-market roles, or see who owns the plan: to put a senior leader over the machine, hire a GTM lead; for part of the week, see fractional GTM; for a fixed-term launch or gap, see interim GTM jobs. If the plan itself is the question, start with go-to-market strategy.

02/ scope

How to hire a GTM engineer

1. Write the build list

Start with what the machine must do, not the title. Enrich a target-account list and keep it fresh? Route inbound leads in minutes rather than days? Run outbound to a new segment? Rebuild a CRM nobody trusts? A GTM engineer hired without a build list ends up as a tool administrator.

2. Decide who owns the number

A GTM engineer builds for someone. If no one owns the pipeline target and the go-to-market plan, fix that first: a GTM consultant can diagnose the motion, a GTM advisor can guide the founder, and a fractional head of sales can own the number. We can put a senior GTM lead on the work directly, with the engineer building underneath.

3. Test the build, not the tool list

Give finalists a sample of your account data and ask how they would enrich, score and route it, and what they would not automate. Ask how they handle opt-outs, suppression lists and the difference between a limited company and a sole trader under the marketing rules (below). Ask to see documentation from a past build. The Institute of Sales Professionals is the membership body for the sales profession; a candidate who understands how sellers work will build a machine they actually use.

4. Settle ownership and the engagement

Agree that the workflows, data tables, sending domains and documentation belong to your company, so an in-house hire can take them over. Fix the days, the first three builds and who signs them off. If the engineer works through their own company, check IR35 before the start date: the off-payroll working rules may apply.

05/ founding gtm engineer

Founding GTM engineer: the first builder in a startup

A founding GTM engineer is the first technical go-to-market hire at an early-stage company. There is no data team, no RevOps function and often no CRM worth the name. The founding GTM engineer sets up the stack, builds the first target-account lists and outbound, and writes down how it all works so the next hires can run it.

The seat usually sits beside the first commercial leader, not under a large team. If the company is still hiring that leader, read founding GTM lead first: the lead decides the motion and the engineer builds it. Some startups hire the engineer first, when the founders still sell and what they lack is pipeline. Either order can work, as long as someone owns the number.

Test a founding GTM engineer on range. They will need to set up the CRM, clean inherited data, build outbound to a first segment and report on it to the founders. Ask for a build they started from nothing, and what they would do differently. Agree from day one that the company owns every account, workflow and data table they create.

06/ gtm engineer vs revops vs sdr

GTM engineer vs RevOps vs SDR: which seat to fill

The three seats overlap, and job ads blur them. Bloomberry’s analysis of GTM engineering job postings found that GTM engineer and RevOps postings list largely the same responsibilities. RevOps postings lead with CRM ownership and forecast accuracy; GTM engineer postings lead with automation, integration and outbound. An SDR is different again: a seller who researches accounts and books meetings, rather than a builder.

Choose by the gap. If sellers waste their week finding contacts and cleaning records, hire a GTM engineer. If the pipeline report and the forecast are not trusted, see fractional RevOps. If the target accounts are known and the diary is empty, see fractional SDR. In a small team one person may cover two seats for a while; write down which comes first.

All three answer to whoever owns revenue. At board level that is often a chief revenue officer; see CRO recruitment.

07/ outbound data rules

PECR and UK GDPR: the rules a GTM engineer builds to

Outbound is regulated, and a GTM engineer’s build decides whether you comply. The ICO’s business-to-business marketing guidance explains that PECR’s rule on marketing by electronic mail does not apply to corporate subscribers such as limited companies and LLPs. It does apply to sole traders and some partnerships, which PECR treats the same as individuals. Live marketing calls to businesses must be screened against both the TPS and the Corporate TPS, and against your own do-not-call list.

For individual subscribers, the ICO’s electronic mail guidance says marketing emails and texts need specific consent, or the soft opt-in for your own previous customers. The soft opt-in does not cover bought-in lists or new contacts. Every message must say who it is from and give a valid way to opt out. The same rules cover direct messages on social media.

UK GDPR applies whenever a named business contact’s personal data is used for direct marketing, including data that is publicly available. You need a lawful basis, and you must tell contacts what you are doing with their data. Many B2B teams rely on legitimate interests; the ICO’s legitimate interests guidance sets out the three-part test and when to record a legitimate interests assessment. Ask any GTM engineer candidate to show where opt-outs, suppression and subscriber type sit in their build.

08/ ir35

IR35 and GTM engineers employed, or through their own company

A GTM engineer may be employed full-time or part-time, or work through their own limited company. In the last case the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. Status is decided by how the engagement runs in practice, not by the contract’s label.

A medium or large client makes the status determination. For a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides; HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests. For go-to-market strategy in depth, our family site gtm.quest covers the plan the machine serves.

09/ questions

GTM engineer jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a GTM engineer.

Technical go-to-market roles. The GTM engineer builds the systems that find buyers and put them in front of sales: data enrichment, signals, lead scoring and routing, outbound sequencing, CRM automation and reporting. The role builds the machine; the GTM lead or head of sales owns the number it feeds.

Write the build list first, then decide who owns the number the engineer builds for. Test finalists on a sample of your own data, ask how they handle opt-outs and suppression, and agree that your company owns every workflow and data table. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. To put a leader over the work, hire a GTM lead.

There is no UK benchmark for the title yet, and we set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist. The best published evidence is US-weighted: Bloomberry’s analysis of 1,000 GTM engineering postings puts the median advertised salary at $127,500. That is US context, not a UK rate.

The first technical go-to-market hire at an early-stage company. They set up the CRM and the stack, build the first target-account lists and outbound, and document it so the next hires can run it. They usually work beside the first commercial leader; see founding GTM lead.

A GTM engineer builds the enrichment, scoring, routing and outbound systems. RevOps runs the CRM, the revenue process and the forecast; job postings for the two overlap heavily. An SDR is a seller who researches accounts and books meetings. Hire for the gap: data, process or meetings. See fractional RevOps and fractional SDR.

To limited companies and LLPs, yes: PECR’s electronic mail rule does not apply to corporate subscribers. Sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals and need consent or the soft opt-in. UK GDPR applies to a named contact’s data either way, and calls must be screened against the TPS and Corporate TPS (ICO).

Often, because the work is heavy at the build and lighter once it runs. A part-week engineer can build the machine and hand it to an in-house team. Once upkeep and new builds fill a week, a full-time hire is usually the better answer. See fractional GTM for the wider part-time team.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
