GTM lead jobs · hire a GTM lead, fractional or permanent

GTM lead jobs are senior go-to-market roles: one person who owns how a company finds, wins and keeps customers, across sales, marketing and customer success, and answers for the pipeline number. Head of GTM is the same seat under a more senior title. To hire a GTM lead, name the gap first, then the days a week it needs.

We place GTM leads fractional, interim and permanent, and we can put a senior GTM lead into the work directly. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live GTM leadership roles are on the board below.

Live GTM leadership roles

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a GTM lead brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

What is a GTM lead? the meaning, in one line

A GTM lead is the person who owns a company’s go-to-market: who it sells to, the message, the channels, the pipeline and the handover to customer success, with one number to answer for. That is the GTM lead meaning in one line. GTM stands for go-to-market; “GTM leader” is the same idea used loosely for anyone senior in the motion.

The title is young and used unevenly. Kyle Poyar of Growth Unhinged describes a GTM lead in an early product-led company as a generalist working with customers across sales, customer success and support. At a larger company the same title means a leader with sellers, marketers and operations people reporting in. Read the job, not the badge.

GTM lead vs founding GTM lead

A founding GTM lead is the first dedicated commercial hire at an early-stage company, taking over from founder-led selling; Stage 2 Capital makes the point that this first hire is not always a seller. A GTM lead usually arrives later, when there is already some selling, marketing or customer success to lead, and the job is to make it one motion. Same letters, different stage.

Where the seat sits on the ladder

Below the GTM lead sit the doers: SDRs, a GTM engineer and RevOps. Beside it sit the specialist leaders, a head of sales or head of growth. Above it, at scale, sits a CRO. The full map is on our GTM jobs hub.

02/ scope

How to hire a GTM lead

1. Write down the gap

What does nobody own today? Sales and marketing running separate plans, a pipeline that stalls at the same stage, a founder who has handed over selling but not the strategy, or a new market with no playbook. The answer sets the level and the days.

2. Decide fractional, interim or permanent

If the motion does not fill a week, a fractional GTM lead on agreed days owns it without a full-time salary. If a seat is empty or a launch needs someone every day, look at interim GTM jobs. Once the playbook is proven and the work fills the week, hire permanent. If what you need is a plan rather than an owner, a GTM consultant or a GTM advisor may be enough for now.

3. Test the work

Give candidates your pipeline, your CRM and your last two quarters, and ask what they would change in the first month and what they would stop. A GTM lead should be at home with sellers and marketers alike: membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals or the Chartered Institute of Marketing is one signal among several. Take references from a CEO and from someone who reported to them.

4. Settle the terms

Agree the days, what the GTM lead can sign off alone, who covers between their days, and the outcomes for the first three months. If they work through their own company, check IR35 before the start date (below).

What we do on a GTM lead brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives, and non-executive directors. Where the work cannot wait for a search, we can put a senior GTM lead on it directly.

05/ gtm lead jobs

GTM lead jobs: what the seat owns, and who hires one

GTM lead jobs tend to appear at the moment a company’s selling stops being one person’s job. The scope is usually the go-to-market plan and the ideal customer profile; positioning and messaging with marketing; the pipeline and the forecast; the sales process from first touch to renewal; and the people doing each part. The difference from a sales leader is breadth: a GTM lead answers for how the pieces fit, not only for closed deals.

Hirers are mostly scale-ups that have outgrown founder-led selling but are not ready for a CRO, and established companies launching a product or entering a market. Many start with a fractional GTM lead for two or three days a week, then hire permanent once the motion is proven. Candidates with a record across two of sales, marketing and customer success read strongest.

If you want the strategy side in depth before you apply or hire, our sister site gtm.quest covers go-to-market strategy, and our go-to-market strategy page sets out who should own it. Live GTM lead jobs are on the board on this page.

06/ head of gtm

GTM lead vs head of GTM: one rung up

A head of GTM owns the go-to-market function rather than one motion: sales, marketing and revenue operations report in, and the head of GTM sets the plan they share. At a small company the titles GTM lead and head of GTM are often used for the same job; the difference shows in whether the person manages leaders or does the work alongside a small team. The seat, its pay against adjacent titles and how to hire one are on head of GTM jobs; the rung above is the GTM director.

07/ ir35

IR35 and the board seat for a GTM lead

A fractional or interim GTM lead is either employed on a part-time or fixed-term contract, or works through their own limited company. GOV.UK notes that a person may be an employee in employment law but have a different status for tax purposes. Where the GTM lead works through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply.

A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, so set out control, substitution and the days in the contract and run it that way. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

“Head of” is a job title, not an office. If a head of GTM joins the board, the seven general duties of a company director apply, and GOV.UK notes they still apply to someone who acts as a director without being formally appointed. Agree in writing whether the seat is a board seat.

GTM lead jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a GTM lead.

The person who owns a company’s go-to-market: who it sells to, the message, the channels, the pipeline and the handover to customer success, with one number to answer for. GTM stands for go-to-market. A GTM leader is the same idea, used loosely for anyone senior in the motion.

Senior go-to-market roles, fractional, interim or permanent, in which one person owns the plan and the pipeline across sales, marketing and customer success. They usually appear when selling stops being the founder’s job. Live GTM lead jobs are on the board on this page.

A GTM lead usually runs the motion alongside a small team; a head of GTM leads the go-to-market function, with sales, marketing and revenue operations leaders reporting in. At a small company the two titles often name the same job. See head of GTM jobs.

Write down what nobody owns today, then decide fractional, interim or permanent. Test candidates on your own pipeline and CRM, take references from a CEO and from someone who reported to them, and settle IR35 before the start date. We send a shortlist of 3–5. For the first commercial hire at an early company, see founding GTM lead.

We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist; a fractional GTM lead costs the day rate times the days worked. No published UK salary survey reports pay under the title GTM lead or head of GTM. The nearest benchmark is sales leadership: IT Jobs Watch puts the median advertised salary at £75,000 for a head of sales and £100,000 for a sales director.

Stage. A founding GTM lead is the first dedicated commercial hire, taking over from founder-led selling and often doing every part of the job by hand. A GTM lead arrives when there is already some selling, marketing or customer success, and the job is to make it one motion. See founding GTM lead.

No. A CRO owns every revenue line, including pricing and renewals, and sits with the CEO and the board. A GTM lead owns one go-to-market motion and its pipeline. At a scale-up a head of GTM can be the most senior revenue person; at scale, the seat usually sits under a CRO.

Yes. A fractional GTM lead works agreed days each week, owns the plan and the number for those days, and suits a company whose go-to-market work does not yet fill a week. See fractional GTM, or interim GTM jobs for full-time cover.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
