Fractional BDR jobs · hire a fractional BDR to open new accounts

Fractional BDR jobs are part-week outbound sales roles. A business development representative researches target accounts, opens conversations with buyers who have never heard of you, and books first meetings for a seller, on agreed days rather than full time. To hire a fractional BDR, first name the accounts you want opened.

We place BDRs fractional, part-time and permanent, and the sales leaders above them. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live SDR and BDR roles are on the board below.

Live SDR and BDR roles

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a BDR brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

What a fractional BDR does: outbound into accounts that do not know you

A fractional BDR works outbound. They pick accounts from your ideal customer profile, find the people who would buy, and start the first conversation by call, email and LinkedIn message. The output is a first meeting with an account that was not in your pipeline before. It is an entry-level seat on the go-to-market ladder, and doing it part-week takes discipline.

The titles blur. Where a company splits them, the SDR qualifies inbound interest (demo requests, trial sign-ups, event leads) and the BDR goes after new accounts. The fractional SDR jobs page covers the SDR side, its costs and SDR recruitment; the fractional SDR explainer sets out the UK rules on cold email and calls, which bite hardest on BDR work. Read those before any outbound starts.

Where the BDR sits on the ladder

The BDR is the first rung. Above sit the GTM specialist and GTM manager, then a GTM lead or founding GTM lead, a head of GTM, a GTM director and, at scale, a CRO. Beside the BDR sit the builders: a GTM engineer who automates the account research and RevOps who keeps the CRM honest. The full map is on the GTM jobs hub.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional BDR

1. Name the accounts

Write down the segment, the job titles you want to reach and a first list of target accounts. A BDR with no list spends their days building one, which is work a GTM engineer can often automate. If nobody can say who the buyer is yet, the gap is strategy, not outbound: our go-to-market strategy page covers who should own that.

2. Fix the days and the continuity

New-account outbound works on follow-up. Set fixed days, keep the same person on the same accounts, and log every touch in your CRM, so a sequence does not stall between the BDR’s days. Two or three set days a week is easier to run than scattered hours.

3. Give them someone to hand to

A BDR books meetings; someone else has to take them. Agree what counts as a qualified meeting, who runs it and how the handover works. If there is no seller or sales leader to own that process, start one rung up with a fractional head of sales, or a fractional business development director for partnership-led selling.

4. Test the work

Ask candidates to research three of your target accounts, write the opening email to one named buyer and run a short mock cold call. Membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals is a signal of a rep investing in the craft, but the exercise tells you more.

What we do on a BDR brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent people, from BDRs to non-executive directors. If you want a BDR in the seat full time, see BDR jobs, our page on hiring a permanent business development representative.

05/ fractional bdr jobs

Fractional BDR jobs: who hires one, and who does the work

BDR work usually fills a week, so fractional BDR jobs appear where the outbound is narrow or early. A founder testing a new vertical before hiring a team. A scale-up opening one region or one enterprise segment. A consultancy that wins work through a short list of large accounts and needs someone to open doors between projects.

The people doing the work tend to be experienced reps rather than first-jobbers: they have run outbound before, can research an account without a playbook, and split their week between two or three companies. That is the draw for candidates, too. A fractional BDR can pick sectors they know and build a record across several motions. Some move on to a GTM specialist or GTM manager role; others step into sales enablement, training the reps who come after them.

Live SDR and BDR roles, fractional and full time, are on the board on this page. If you are hiring and the plan behind the outbound is still open, our sister site gtm.quest covers go-to-market strategy in depth.

06/ outsourced vs fractional

Outsourced BDR vs fractional BDR: which one fits new-account outbound

An outsourced BDR is a service. You buy outbound activity from an agency, which supplies the reps, the data, the tools and the sequences, and usually charges a monthly retainer or a price per meeting. A fractional BDR is a person. They work your process in your CRM on agreed days, report to your sales lead and are paid for the days they work. Both give you outbound without a full-time hire; they differ on control and on what stays with you.

Outsourcing suits a quick test of a segment: the agency starts with its own machinery, and volume is its strength. Its weak spot is depth, because the reps divide their attention across clients and learn your product second-hand. A fractional BDR suits accounts where the first conversation needs real product knowledge and months of follow-up, and where you want the learning (which titles reply, which messages land) to stay in your business. Whichever you choose, judge it on qualified meetings and the deals that come from them, not activity counts.

Two checks before you sign. For an outsourced service, the agency will usually handle prospect data on your behalf, so agree in writing who is the controller and who is the processor (the ICO explains the difference) and who keeps the lists, sequences and CRM records when the contract ends. For a fractional BDR billing through their own company, the off-payroll rules may apply (see IR35 below). The sales development rep outsourcing checklist on our SDR page covers the rest.

07/ part-time bdr

Part-time BDR: employee, contractor or fractional

A part-time BDR can be engaged three ways. As a part-time employee on your payroll, with a contract for fewer hours. As a contractor through their own limited company, on a day rate. Or as a fractional BDR who works for two or three companies across the week, usually on the same contractor terms. The work is the same; the paperwork and the tax are not.

A part-time employee has the same rights as a comparable full-timer, pro rata: GOV.UK’s guidance on part-time workers’ rights lists pay rates, holidays, training and selection for promotion among them. That matters for commission, which is part of pay: put a part-time BDR on the same commission terms as the full-time team, with a pro-rata target, unless you can justify the difference.

For pay benchmarks, BeBee UK listings put contract and part-time SDR day rates at £150–£250 a day, and full-time SDR salary/OTE at £26,000–£55,000. Those figures are reported under the SDR title, which many employers use for the same outbound seat. A part-time BDR at two days a week costs the day rate times two. For the outreach rules a part-time rep has to follow, see the part-time SDR section of our fractional SDR page.

08/ ir35

IR35 for a fractional BDR

A fractional or part-time BDR who works through their own company may fall under the off-payroll working rules (IR35). A rep who works your sequences, in your CRM, on hours your sales lead sets, looks more like an employee than one who runs an outbound project their own way; an outsourced agency service is typically a business-to-business supply, not employment.

A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax tool gives HMRC’s view on a specific engagement. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, so write down control, substitution and the days, and run it that way. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ questions

Fractional BDR FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional BDR.

Part-week outbound sales roles. A business development representative opens conversations with new accounts and books first meetings for a seller, on agreed days, often for two or three companies at once. They suit a narrow or early outbound motion. Live SDR and BDR roles are on the board on this page.

Name the segment, the buyer titles and a first account list; fix the days and keep the same person on the same accounts; agree who takes the meetings; and test candidates on real account research and a mock cold call. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

The day rate times the days worked. BeBee UK listings put contract and part-time SDR day rates at £150–£250 a day, a figure reported under the SDR title that many employers use for the same seat. We set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist.

An outsourced BDR is a service: an agency supplies reps, data, tools and sequences, usually on a retainer or per meeting, and its reps work several clients. A fractional BDR is a person working your process in your CRM on agreed days, under your sales lead. Outsourcing is quicker to start; fractional keeps the learning and the data with you.

Yes: as a part-time employee, as a contractor on a day rate, or as a fractional BDR shared with other companies. A part-time employee is entitled to the same treatment as a comparable full-timer, pro rata, including pay rates and holidays (GOV.UK). Fixed days work better than scattered hours, because outbound runs on follow-up.

Often the titles are used for one job. Where a company splits them, the SDR qualifies inbound interest and the BDR prospects outbound into new accounts. Read the job description, not the letters. See fractional SDR jobs for the SDR side and BDR vs SDR on our permanent BDR page.

When nobody owns the sales process the BDR feeds. A BDR books meetings; someone has to define a qualified meeting, run it and close. If that person does not exist, start with a fractional head of sales and add BDR capacity once the process does.

It depends on how the engagement runs, not on its label. A rep working your process under your direction may be inside; an agency service is typically a business-to-business supply. A medium or large client makes the determination (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
