Fractional RevOps jobs · hire a fractional revenue operations lead, or hire one for good

Fractional RevOps jobs are revenue operations roles held for part of the week: a senior operator who owns the CRM, the pipeline data, the sales process and the reporting that sales, marketing and customer success all work from. To hire a fractional RevOps lead, decide what is broken first (the data, the process, the forecast or the tools), then how many days it takes to fix.

We place RevOps people on fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent terms, and we can put a RevOps lead on the work directly. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live roles are on the board below.

Live revenue operations and GTM roles

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a RevOps lead brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

Fractional RevOps jobs: what the seat owns

A fractional RevOps lead runs the operating system behind revenue, not a one-off clean-up. The usual scope: the CRM and how it is set up; the pipeline stages and the rules for moving a deal between them; lead routing from marketing to sales; the forecast and the board reporting; the commission and territory plans; and the tools that sit around the CRM. The lead is named on the revenue team and answers for the data between visits.

Where the seat sits

RevOps sits beside the revenue leader, not under one team. In a company with a fractional CRO, the RevOps lead is usually the CRO’s operator. Where there is a head of sales and a separate marketing lead, RevOps is the shared ground they both report from. Below it, a GTM engineer builds the enrichment, routing and outbound automation, and SDRs work the pipeline it produces.

Part of a GTM team

Most fractional RevOps jobs come up inside a wider go-to-market build: a new GTM lead, a go-to-market strategy being rewritten, or a fractional GTM team that needs its numbers in one place. Every seat in that team is on our GTM jobs hub.

02/ scope

Hire a RevOps lead

What revenue operations is

Revenue operations, or RevOps, joins sales operations, marketing operations and customer success operations into one function with one set of data. The point is a single version of the pipeline: marketing, sales and customer success agree what a lead is, what a qualified opportunity is and when a customer counts as at risk, and the CRM records it the same way for all three.

1. Name the problem

Start with the symptom. A forecast nobody believes, leads that sit unassigned, two teams reporting different pipeline numbers, a CRM the sellers avoid, or commission disputes every month. Then decide the days a week you can fund and who the role reports to: usually the CRO, the head of sales or the CEO.

2. Test the work

Give candidates read access to a copy of your CRM or last quarter’s pipeline report and ask what they would change first. Ask how they would define the pipeline stages, how they would handle duplicate records, and how they would roll out a change the sellers dislike. Take references from a revenue leader and a finance lead.

3. Settle the data and the terms

The CRM holds personal data, so the lead must work to the UK GDPR principles: data kept accurate and up to date, held no longer than necessary, and used for the purpose it was collected for. If the role runs the commission plan, Acas says an employee’s entitlement to commission should be in the written statement of employment particulars. Agree who owns the workflows, reports and admin accounts: they belong to your company.

What we do on a RevOps brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting. If you would rather not run a search, tell us and we can put a RevOps lead on it directly.

05/ revops consultant

RevOps consultant: a project, or an owner

A RevOps consultant fixes a defined problem and leaves: a CRM migration, a rebuild of the pipeline stages, a forecasting model or a commission plan. A fractional RevOps lead stays, part of the week, and owns the data and the process after the project ends. The work often starts as the first and turns into the second once the company sees how much upkeep the systems need.

Choose a consultant when the scope has an end date and someone in-house will run what is built. Choose a fractional lead when nobody in-house owns the revenue data. Either way, write down what is being handed over (workflows, reports, field definitions and admin access) before the work starts.

If the real gap is the plan rather than the systems, a GTM consultant is the better brief; our go-to-market strategy guide at gtm.quest covers the strategy side in depth. Membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals, the professional body for selling, is one signal of a consultant who knows how a sales team works day to day.

06/ head of revenue operations

Head of revenue operations: the permanent seat

A head of revenue operations is the full-time, permanent version of the seat. The role usually arrives once there are separate sales, marketing and customer success teams and a revenue leader above them, often at the same time as a CRO. The head of revenue operations manages a small team (sales operations, marketing operations, sometimes data and GTM engineering) and owns the forecast the board sees.

Many companies get there in steps: a fractional RevOps lead first, to set the definitions and clean the data, then a permanent head of revenue operations once the work fills a week. We recruit both. For the revenue leader the role reports to, see CRO recruitment, or hire a fractional CRO for part of the week.

If the role will run outbound, it inherits the rules on business contact data. The ICO’s business-to-business marketing guidance explains that the PECR rule on marketing email does not apply to limited companies but does apply to sole traders and some partnerships, and that UK GDPR applies to a named business contact’s personal data.

07/ ir35

IR35 and fractional RevOps leads employed part-time or through a company

A fractional RevOps lead is either employed on a part-time contract or works through their own limited company. The label does not settle the status: GOV.UK notes that a person may be an employee in employment law but have a different status for tax purposes. Where the lead works through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply.

A medium or large client makes the status determination. For a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides; HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ questions

Fractional RevOps jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional RevOps lead.

Revenue operations roles held for part of the week. The fractional RevOps lead owns the CRM, the pipeline stages, lead routing, the forecast and the reporting at one business for an agreed number of days, often alongside other clients. It is an ownership seat, not a one-off project.

One function that joins sales operations, marketing operations and customer success operations, with one set of data and one version of the pipeline. Its job is to make sure every revenue team defines leads, opportunities and customers the same way, and reports from the same numbers.

Name the symptom first (an untrusted forecast, unassigned leads, conflicting pipeline numbers), then the days a week and who the role reports to. Test candidates on a copy of your own CRM or pipeline report, take references from a revenue leader and a finance lead, and agree data ownership and IR35 before the start date. Every GTM seat is on our GTM jobs hub.

The day rate times the days worked for a fractional lead, or a salary for a permanent head of revenue operations. We do not quote a market figure here because no published source we trust covers the role. We set out each candidate’s pay or day rate on the shortlist.

Fixes a defined problem and hands it over: a CRM migration, new pipeline stages, a forecasting model or a commission plan. A fractional RevOps lead stays on part of the week and owns the data afterwards. Choose the consultant when someone in-house will run what is built.

Owns revenue operations full-time: the forecast the board sees, the CRM and the process rules, and a small team across sales operations, marketing operations and data. The seat usually arrives alongside a CRO; see CRO recruitment.

RevOps owns the revenue data, process and reporting across teams. A GTM engineer builds the enrichment, routing and outbound automation that feed it. At a small company one person may do both; as the team grows, the GTM engineer usually reports to the RevOps or GTM lead.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
