Interim GTM jobs · hire an interim GTM leader for a launch, a gap or a turnaround
Interim GTM jobs are full-time, fixed-term go-to-market leadership roles. An interim GTM leader runs sales, marketing and pipeline for a set period: to launch a product or enter a market, to fill a gap while a permanent search runs, or to turn round a revenue line that has stalled. To hire an interim GTM leader, write the mandate and the end point first, then the start date.
We place GTM people on interim, fractional, advisory, consulting and permanent terms, and we recruit part-time and temporary hires too. We can put a senior GTM lead on the work directly. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live interim roles are on the board below.

01/ the role
Interim GTM jobs: what the seat covers
An interim GTM leader owns go-to-market for the length of the mandate: the plan, the pipeline target, the sales and marketing teams, and the handover at the end. Unlike an adviser, they run the work and answer for the number every week. Unlike a fractional leader, they are there every working day, usually through their own company or on a fixed-term contract.
Three mandates: a launch, a gap or a turnaround
A launch: a new product, market or channel needs one leader to take it from plan to first revenue, then hand it to a permanent team. A gap: the head of sales, growth or revenue has left and a permanent search will take longer than the pipeline can wait. A turnaround: revenue has missed plan for several quarters and the board wants someone with no stake in the old approach. The Institute of Interim Management’s survey lists change, turnaround and gap cover among the main kinds of interim assignment.
What interim GTM jobs pay
No published survey covers interim GTM leaders on their own. The broadest neutral source is the Institute of Interim Management’s Interim Management Survey 2026: an average interim day rate of £907 across all sectors, £1,004 in the private sector, with the average assignment lasting 10.0 months. Those are averages across every interim discipline, not a GTM rate. We set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist; the rate calculator turns a day rate into a monthly cost.
The rest of the GTM family
Interim is one route among several. Browse all GTM jobs, or hire a GTM lead on a permanent contract. If the plan is the problem rather than the leadership, a GTM consultant or a GTM advisor may be the better first step; start with go-to-market strategy. For go-to-market strategy in depth, our family site gtm.quest covers it.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim GTM leader
1. Write the mandate and the end point
Say whether the job is a launch, a gap or a turnaround, what the interim inherits (team, pipeline, budget, targets), who they report to, and what must be true when they leave: first revenue from the new market, a permanent successor chosen, a pipeline the board trusts. A brief that mixes the three without saying so draws the wrong shortlist.
2. Pitch the seat
If the remit is sales alone, see interim sales director jobs. If it is marketing alone, see interim marketing director jobs. If one leader must own every revenue line, see interim CRO jobs. An interim GTM leader suits the space between: a company whose sales and growth work need one owner for a set period. If the need is a build rather than a leader, hire a GTM engineer.
3. Assess against the work
The CIPD’s guidance on selection methods favours clear, structured processes, with skill-based tasks alongside interviews. For an interim GTM leader, the task is your own situation: give finalists the pipeline, the plan and the last two quarters, and ask what they would do in the first month. Take references from a CEO or investor who watched a past mandate end.
4. Settle the route and IR35
Most interim leaders work through their own limited company, so the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply; others take a fixed-term contract of employment that ends on a date or when a task is done. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests. We send a shortlist of 3–5 after our five-stage vetting.

05/ interim head of sales and growth
Interim head of sales and growth: one seat over two teams
An interim head of sales and growth runs the sellers and the demand engine together for a fixed term. It is a common shape at a scale-up where the two functions report to the founder and nobody joins them up: marketing counts leads, sales says they are poor, and the pipeline target is missed. The interim owns both sides, sets one definition of a qualified lead and one pipeline number, and reports on it weekly.
Ask for evidence from both sides. On sales: a team they led, the targets and the forecast. On growth: channels they built and how they judged them. The Institute of Sales Professionals and the Chartered Institute of Marketing are the professional bodies on each side; membership is one signal among several, not a requirement.
If the seat should be part-week instead, see fractional head of sales or fractional head of growth. If a permanent owner of sales is the end point, see fractional sales director for the part-time bridge and CRO recruitment for the board seat.
06/ interim vs fractional gtm
Interim vs fractional GTM: a full week or part of one
The difference is time. An interim GTM leader works every day for a fixed term and is measured on a defined end point. A fractional GTM leader works an agreed number of days, often for several clients, and stays as long as the part-time seat is useful. Both own the work; neither is an adviser.
Choose interim when the work fills a week and has a deadline: a launch date, a board meeting, a vacancy. Choose fractional when the business needs senior direction but not a full week of it, as is common before a startup’s founding GTM lead is hired. Many engagements move between the two: an interim who steadies a function may stay on for a day or two a week while the permanent hire settles in.
Either way, the leader will run outbound, so the rules on it come with the seat. The ICO’s business-to-business marketing guidance sets out how PECR and UK GDPR apply to marketing calls and emails to businesses. If the data and systems under the plan need work too, add fractional RevOps or a GTM engineer.
07/ ir35
IR35 and interim GTM leaders who decides the status
Where an interim works through their own company, IR35 status is decided by how the engagement runs in practice, not by its label. A medium or large client makes the status determination and should give the interim a status determination statement with its reasons. For a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides; HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients.
The IIM survey notes that many interims still do not receive a status determination statement, and says the end client must provide one unless the client is a defined SME. Settle control, substitution and the days in the contract, then run the mandate that way.
