GTM consultant · a senior go-to-market consultant who does the work, not just the deck
A GTM consultant is a senior go-to-market specialist brought in for a defined piece of work: the ideal customer profile, positioning, pricing, the sales process or the pipeline plan. A good one builds it with your team and stays until it runs, rather than handing over a deck. To hire a GTM consultant, name the problem first, then the weeks and days it needs.
We are not an agency. We place a senior GTM consultant or GTM lead who does the work inside your business, and we can put a GTM lead on it directly. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent go-to-market people, and non-executive directors. Every brief gets a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a GTM consultant brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
GTM consultant: what the work is
A GTM consultant works on how a product reaches paying customers. The usual scope is one or more of: who to sell to and why (the ideal customer profile), what to say (positioning and messaging), what to charge, which channels to use, and how a lead becomes a signed contract. The output is a working go-to-market strategy and the first version of the process that runs it.
Doing the work, not writing the deck
The difference that matters is whether the consultant does the work. A slide deck of recommendations leaves your team to build the thing. A consultant who does the work writes the messaging, rebuilds the CRM stages, runs the first outbound test and sits in the pipeline review until the numbers move. Ask for the second kind, and write the deliverables into the engagement.
Where the consultant sits in the GTM team
A consultant is one seat in a wider set of GTM jobs. The builder under the plan is a GTM engineer; the systems and reporting belong to RevOps; the seat that owns the number is a GTM lead. For senior judgement a few hours a month, a GTM advisor is lighter still. For the strategy itself in depth, our family site gtm.quest covers go-to-market strategy end to end.
02/ scope
How to hire a go-to-market consultant
1. Name the problem
Start with what is not working. Deals stall at the same stage, the pipeline comes only from the founder, a new market has no playbook, or marketing and sales disagree on what a good lead is. One clear problem makes a better brief than a list of hopes.
2. Set the deliverables and the days
Write down what exists at the end: a tested ideal customer profile, messaging your sellers use, a sales process in the CRM, a first outbound campaign with results. Then agree the weeks and days a week. A go-to-market consultant engagement should have an end date; if the work has none, you need a seat, not a project.
3. Test candidates on your own numbers
Share your pipeline, win and loss notes and current messaging, and ask what they would change first and how they would know it worked. Ask who did the work on their last engagement: them, or a junior team. Membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals or the Chartered Institute of Marketing is one signal among several. Take references from a founder or CEO who worked beside them.
4. Settle ownership and status
Agree that everything the consultant builds belongs to your company: the messaging, the CRM set-up, the data and the sending accounts. Settle IR35 before the start date (below). Then decide who runs it after the consultant leaves; if that is nobody yet, plan to hire a GTM lead alongside.
What we do on a GTM consultant brief
We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. Every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first. If the brief is better served by a leader who owns the number, we say so and shortlist for that seat instead.

05/ gtm agency
GTM consultant vs GTM agency: one senior person, or a service
A GTM agency sells execution from outside the business: a team that runs campaigns, outbound sequences, account-based marketing or content on a retainer. A GTM consultant is one senior person you engage for a defined problem, working inside your team. The agency is the better buy when the plan is clear and what is missing is volume. The consultant is the better buy when nobody is sure the plan is right.
Fractional Quest is not a GTM agency, and we do not claim to be one. We place a senior GTM consultant or GTM lead who does the work inside your business, and we can put a GTM lead on it directly. Many companies end up with both: the consultant or lead sets the plan and holds the agency to it. If you want the agency route, or a deeper read on go-to-market strategy first, our family site gtm.quest covers both.
Whoever runs outbound, the rules are the same. The ICO’s business-to-business marketing guidance explains that the PECR rule on marketing by electronic mail does not apply to corporate subscribers such as limited companies, but does apply to sole traders and some partnerships, and that UK GDPR applies to a business contact’s personal data. Ask a consultant or an agency how they handle opt-outs and suppression before anything is sent.
06/ consultant or lead
GTM consultant vs fractional GTM lead: a project, or a seat
A GTM consultant delivers a piece of work and leaves. A fractional GTM lead takes a seat: agreed days every week, named on the leadership team, answering for pipeline and revenue between visits. If the problem has an end date, hire a consultant. If the problem is that nobody owns go-to-market, hire a GTM lead, fractional or full-time.
Two more seats sit close by. An interim GTM leader covers the seat full-time for a fixed term, often while a permanent search runs. A founding GTM lead is the first permanent commercial hire at an early-stage company, taking over from founder-led selling. For the sales seat on its own, see fractional head of sales.
A common sequence: a consultant tests the plan, a fractional lead runs it until it is proven, and a permanent hire takes it over. Brief us at any point in that sequence and we will say which seat fits the work.
07/ ir35
IR35 and GTM consultants status follows how the work runs
Most GTM consultants work through their own limited company, so the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. The label “consultant” does not settle it. Status is decided by how the engagement runs in practice: who decides what work is done and how, whether the consultant can send a substitute, and how they are paid.
A medium or large client makes the status determination and issues a status determination statement. For a small client outside the public sector, the consultant’s own company decides; HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax tool can help either side reach a view. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests in plain terms.
