Commercial director jobs · permanent, interim and fractional

Commercial director jobs are senior roles that own how a company grows its revenue: the commercial strategy, sales, key accounts, pricing and partnerships, usually reporting to the managing director or CEO. The board below lists the commercial director roles on our board, permanent roles first where the posting says full-time, with head of sales roles beside them.

We recruit permanent, interim, fractional and part-time commercial leaders. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting.

Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a commercial director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.

01/ the role

Commercial director jobs: the seat and what the board lists

A commercial director plans and runs the strategy that grows a company’s revenue. The IoD lists studying the market, working with the marketing director on campaigns, setting financial targets and budgets, managing key stakeholder relationships and reporting commercial performance to the senior team. In an owner-managed business the commercial director is often the most senior revenue leader; in a larger one the seat may report to a chief commercial officer.

The board below lists commercial director roles, with head of sales roles beside them, because employers advertise overlapping seats under both titles. Where a posting says full-time we list it as permanent and show those first; interim and fractional roles follow under their own labels. When there are few, the board widens to commercial and revenue leadership roles and says so.

For the seat in detail, see what a commercial director does and the commercial director job description.

02/ scope

How to get a commercial director job

1. Own a number, then several

Most commercial directors arrive from a sales director, head of sales or key account seat, with time in marketing or pricing. The IoD describes the role as one that needs years of commercial experience across disciplines, and a degree in business, marketing or finance as a usual starting point. Show the revenue and margin you were accountable for, the period, and a referee who saw it.

2. Use the professional frameworks

On the revenue side, the Institute of Sales Professionals’ Sales Capability Framework, the basis of Ofqual’s specification of sales qualifications, sets out what a sales leader is measured on. On the contracts side, CIPS qualifications run from Level 2 to the Level 6 Professional Diploma, after which you can apply for MCIPS chartered status; they are the professional route into public-sector commercial roles.

3. Know the rules the seat answers for

A commercial director sets prices and signs terms. The CMA’s guide to competition law risk warns that directors can be disqualified when their company breaks competition law, and the Bribery Act guidance explains the offence of failing to prevent bribery and the adequate-procedures defence. Expect questions on both at interview.

05/ vacancies

Commercial director vacancies: two jobs under one title

Commercial director vacancies cover two different jobs. In most private businesses the commercial director is a revenue leader: sales, key accounts, pricing and growth. In government and much of the public sector, "commercial" means buying and contracts. The Government Commercial Function is the cross-government network that procures goods and services for government, and its commercial directors run procurement and contract management.

Read the first lines of the job description before you apply. For the procurement-led seat, see interim procurement director jobs; for the revenue-led one, fractional commercial director jobs and fractional head of sales jobs.

Check too whether the title comes with a board appointment. Many commercial director vacancies are senior job titles only; a company director is legally responsible for running the company and its Companies House filings.

06/ permanent jobs

Permanent commercial director jobs: what the seat pays

IT Jobs Watch puts the median advertised commercial director salary at £100,000 in the six months to 22 September 2026, with the 10th percentile at £81,250, from IT-sector job ads. Exec Capital’s 2026 director salary guide gives £90,000–£170,000 base at mid-market businesses, with variable elements of 25–50% of base, and £160,000–£280,000 at larger businesses.

Variable pay matters more in this seat than in most: read the bonus or commission plan, what it is paid on and when, before you accept. Your employer must give you a written statement of employment particulars on day one, covering job title or a description of the work, pay, hours and holiday. For the full pay picture, see commercial director salary.

Exec Capital publishes interim commercial director day rates of £1,000–£1,500 at mid-market scale and £1,300–£2,000 at FTSE 250+ and major PE-backed firms; see the interim commercial director day rate, and interim sales director jobs for the nearest interim board.

Brief us on the scope, the reporting line and whether the role is permanent, interim or fractional. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting.
It depends on how the engagement runs in practice. Where the person works through their own company, a medium or large client decides the status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.
