Procurement director jobs · permanent, interim and fractional

Procurement director jobs are the senior roles that run how a company or public body buys: the strategy for third-party spend, the category and sourcing teams, supplier contracts and supplier risk. The seat is also called head of procurement or chief procurement officer. It is usually permanent, and can be interim or fractional. Our board has no procurement category yet, so the board below shows operations and finance leadership roles, labelled as what they are.

We recruit permanent, interim, fractional and part-time procurement leaders, and non-executive directors. Hiring rather than looking? On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role

Procurement director jobs: the seat, and what our board shows

A procurement director owns the company’s spend with its suppliers: which categories are bought centrally, how suppliers are chosen and managed, what the contracts say, and the savings, quality and risk outcomes the board is told about. In a large business the seat leads category managers, buyers and a supplier-management team; in a smaller one, the procurement director may be most of the team.

The seat now carries rules as well as targets. A company in scope of section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 must publish a modern slavery statement each year, and the government’s transparency in supply chains guidance sets out what it should cover; the evidence usually comes from procurement. In the public sector, buying runs under the Procurement Act 2023, a regime the Cabinet Office announced as in force in February 2025.

What the board below lists

Our board does not yet have a procurement category, so it cannot list procurement roles on their own. Rather than pad the page, the board shows the operations and finance leadership roles on our board, the seats procurement most often reports into, permanent roles first where the posting says full-time, and says what they are. We recruit permanent, interim, fractional and part-time procurement directors; for interim briefs, see interim procurement jobs.

02/ scope

How to get a procurement director job

1. Qualify through CIPS

Senior procurement postings often name the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply. Its qualifications run from the Level 4 Diploma in Procurement and Supply (the entry point for people with business experience) through the Level 5 Advanced Diploma to the Level 6 Professional Diploma, after which you can apply for MCIPS. CIPS describes MCIPS as the mark of a fully qualified, current member, and offers a Management Entry Route for senior procurement professionals.

2. Run categories, then a function

The usual path runs through buyer and category manager, then head of a category or of procurement, with spend, suppliers and a team of your own. A shortlist at director level is decided on the scale and kind of spend you have run and the outcomes you can show: savings, supplier risk reduced, a sourcing model rebuilt.

3. Know the rules the seat answers to

Expect questions on supply chain due diligence and, for public-sector roles, on the Procurement Act 2023; the Cabinet Office’s guidance documents cover the regime phase by phase. A CIPS member commits to the CIPS code of conduct, which includes declaring any personal interest that might affect impartiality and undertaking due diligence on supplier relationships for forced labour.

4. Pick the route in

Not every procurement director job is permanent. Interim roles cover a gap, a sourcing programme or a supplier crisis; see interim procurement director jobs. If you work through your own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply: status turns on how the engagement runs, and a medium or large client makes the determination. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

05/ head of procurement jobs

Head of procurement jobs the same seat, or the one below

Head of procurement jobs cover two different seats. In a mid-sized company head of procurement is the top procurement role, doing the director’s job under a plainer title. In a larger one the head of procurement runs a category, a region or a business unit and reports to a procurement director or a chief procurement officer. Read the reporting line: a role that reports to the chief financial officer or chief operating officer and owns the procurement strategy is the top seat, whatever it is called.

Chief procurement officer jobs are the top seat in larger groups, usually with a seat on or beside the executive committee. Head of commercial, commercial director (public sector) and director of supply chain describe overlapping jobs; search all of them, then sort by what each role owns.

The interview tests the same three things whatever the title: the scale and kind of spend you have run, one sourcing decision you would defend and one you would now make differently, and how you handled a supplier failure.

06/ permanent procurement director jobs

Permanent procurement director jobs what to expect in the package

Permanent procurement director jobs are employed roles on an open-ended contract, with salary, bonus, pension and benefits. They are the usual way the seat is held; interim roles are the alternative for a defined programme or a gap.

We do not publish a pay figure for this seat yet: we have no verified source in our citation ledger for procurement director pay, and we would rather leave the number out than guess it. Pay moves with the scale and complexity of the spend, the sector and whether the role is public or private. We set out pay or day rate for every candidate on a shortlist.

Ask what the seat is measured on before you compare offers: savings against a baseline, supplier risk, sustainability targets or all three. If modern slavery reporting sits with procurement, the government’s guidance shows what the statement must evidence.

Procurement director jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a procurement director.

Our board has no procurement category yet, so this page shows the operations and finance leadership roles on our board, labelled as what they are, permanent roles first. Interim procurement leadership has its own page: interim procurement jobs. Search procurement director, head of procurement and chief procurement officer together.
In a mid-sized company there is often none: head of procurement is the top procurement role under a plainer title. In a larger one the head of procurement runs a category or region and reports to the procurement director or chief procurement officer. The reporting line tells you the seat.
We do not publish a figure for this seat yet, because we have no verified source for it in our citation ledger. Pay moves with the scale of spend, the sector and the remit. On every brief we set out pay or day rate for each candidate on the shortlist.
Qualify through CIPS (the Level 4 to Level 6 diplomas, then MCIPS, or the Management Entry Route if you are already senior), run categories and then a procurement function, and build a record of outcomes on spend, risk and suppliers. Interim roles are another way into the seat.
No law requires it, and the qualification asked for is the employer’s call, but many senior postings name it. CIPS describes MCIPS as showing a fully qualified, current member, and offers a Management Entry Route designed for senior procurement professionals.
It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. In most cases a medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
Decide whether the seat is permanent or interim, then write down the spend it owns, who it reports to and what it is measured on. For an interim brief, see interim procurement director jobs. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5 after five-stage vetting.
