Finance director jobs · permanent, interim and fractional
Finance director jobs are the roles that run a company’s finance function: the team, the numbers, cash, the audit, the bank and financial strategy, usually reporting to the CEO, the owner or a CFO. They come as permanent full-time posts, interim assignments and fractional or part-time seats. The board below shows the FD roles on our board, with permanent roles first where the posting says full-time.
We recruit permanent, interim, fractional and part-time finance leaders, and non-executive directors. Hiring rather than looking? On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Permanent Finance director jobs
Full-time Finance director roles, posted by the employer as full-time and listed as the posting states them. We recruit permanent Finance directors as well as fractional and interim. Finance director recruitment.
Current finance director roles on our board
Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a finance director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
Finance director jobs: what the board holds
The board on this page holds the finance director roles on our board: finance director, group FD and FD roles in every mode of work. Roles whose posting says full-time come first. Interim, fractional and part-time FD roles follow, and where a posting states how the role is engaged, the listing says so. When there are few FD roles, the board widens to the CFO and financial controller seats either side, and says that it has.
What the seat does
Robert Half’s finance director profile describes a seat that manages the finance team day to day and acts as the connection between that team and the CEO or CFO: cash flow, the monthly management accounts, reporting, forecasting and budgeting, tax, audit and risk, the bank and the auditors, and financial and commercial strategy. ICAEW groups the FD with the CFO as the most senior role in the finance function. For the full picture, see what a finance director does.
The title and the board
Not every finance director is a company director. Under the Companies Act, “director” includes any person occupying the position of director, by whatever name called, so what counts is the role actually played. Where the FD does sit on the board, they share the directors’ legal responsibility for the company’s records, accounts and performance. Read the posting for which kind of FD job it is.
02/ scope
How to get a finance director job
1. Qualify
Robert Half’s profile says finance directors should be qualified accountants (ACA, ACCA or CIMA). The ICAEW’s ACA combines technical learning, practical experience and professional skills; the ACCA qualification combines exams, ethics and professional experience; CIMA’s CGMA Professional Qualification is built around management accounting, performance and financial strategy, which suits commercial FD roles.
2. Run the numbers, then the team
Most FDs come up through financial controller or finance manager. Robert Half lists finance director as a common next step from financial controller. ICAEW’s account of one finance manager who became FD and then CFO describes the FD seat as the point where the board starts testing you. Our guide on how to become a finance director sets out the steps.
3. Build the commercial record
An FD shortlist turns on what you did with the numbers: a margin you improved, a refinancing you led, an audit you brought in on time, a system you replaced. Bring two or three of those, with the business’s size and your part in each. Prepare for the questions on our finance director interview questions page.
4. Pick the route in
Not every FD job is permanent. Interim finance director jobs cover a gap or a transaction for a set period; fractional finance director jobs and part-time finance director jobs hold the seat for set days a week. Working through your own company brings the off-payroll rules (IR35) into play; status turns on how the engagement runs, and a medium or large client makes the determination. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

05/ finance director vacancies
Finance director vacancies where they are advertised
Finance director vacancies reach the market in three ways: on employers’ own careers pages and applicant tracking systems, through job boards, and through search firms that never advertise the role at all. The board on this page collects FD vacancies from employers’ boards and job listings, removes duplicates, and leaves out roles advertised by recruitment agencies.
Public-sector finance director vacancies follow their own route. NHS trusts advertise on NHS Jobs, the health service’s own job site, where you apply to the employer directly.
Read a vacancy for the reporting line and the scope. An FD reporting to an owner usually sets the finance agenda; one reporting to a group CFO runs a local function to the group’s timetable. The same title can mean either, so the job description matters more than the headline. See our finance director job description for what a full one covers.
06/ permanent finance director jobs
Permanent finance director jobs the market and the pay
Permanent finance director jobs are full-time employed roles, and they are the ones listed first on this page. Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts a full-time UK finance director at £89,750 at the 25th percentile, £109,500 at the median and £138,000 at the 75th percentile, and a group FD at a median of £131,500 (Robert Half). In London the FD band is £122,000 to £187,750, median £149,000 (Robert Half). Robert Half is a recruiter, and these are its own starting-salary projections.
For comparison, the same guide puts the full-time UK CFO median at £176,500. Base pay is one part of a permanent package: bonus, pension, car allowance and notice period vary by business, so compare offers line by line. For more on pay, see our finance director salary guide.
Some permanent FD searches are run by a search firm rather than an open advert. Our finance director recruitment page sets out how a permanent FD search works from the hiring side.
