Sales director jobs · permanent, interim and fractional

Sales director jobs are senior roles that own a company’s sales: the team, the pipeline, the targets and the forecast, usually reporting to the commercial director, managing director or CEO. They come as permanent full-time posts, interim assignments and fractional seats for set days a week. The board below shows the sales director roles on our board, with permanent roles first where the posting says full-time.

We recruit permanent, interim, fractional and part-time sales leaders. Hiring rather than looking? On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a sales director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.

01/ the role

Sales director jobs: what the board holds

The board on this page holds the sales director roles on our board, with head of sales roles beside them, because employers advertise overlapping seats under both titles. Roles whose posting says full-time come first. Interim and fractional roles follow, and where a posting states how the role is engaged, the listing says so. When there are few, the board widens to revenue leadership roles, from chief revenue officer to chief commercial officer, and says that it has.

What the seat does

The National Careers Service profile of a sales manager lists the core of the job: recruiting and training the sales team, allocating territories, setting targets and finding new business. A sales director does that at the top of the function, with the forecast and the board conversation added. For the day-to-day picture, see what a sales director does and the sales director job description.

One seat, several ways to hold it

A permanent sales director is employed full-time and builds the team over years. An interim sales director holds the seat for a fixed period, to cover a departure or rebuild a team that has stalled. A fractional sales director works agreed days a week, often in a business that needs a sales leader before it can carry a full-time one. The title is the same; the contract, the days and the tax position are not.

02/ scope

How to get a sales director job

1. Carry a number, then lead people who do

Most sales directors arrive from a head of sales, sales manager or key account seat. The National Careers Service says employers often weigh sales and management experience, market knowledge and a record of hitting targets above academic qualifications. Show the revenue you were accountable for, the period, the team you ran and a referee who saw it.

2. Use the professional routes

The Institute of Sales Professionals’ Sales Capability Framework sets out what a sales leader is measured on, and it is the basis of Ofqual’s specification of sales qualifications. For people building the career from the start, the business to business sales professional degree apprenticeship is a Level 6 standard covering prospecting, sales planning and managing complex accounts.

3. Know the rules the seat answers for

A sales director sets prices, signs off discounts and runs people who meet competitors at trade events. The CMA’s guide to competition law risk says the CMA now considers, wherever competition law has been broken, whether to seek the disqualification of the directors involved. The Bribery Act guidance explains the offence of failing to prevent bribery and the adequate-procedures defence. Expect both at interview for a senior seat.

4. Pick the route in

Not every sales director job is permanent. Interim sales director jobs cover a gap or a turnaround for a set period; fractional sales director jobs hold the seat for set days a week. If you work through your own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply: status turns on how the engagement runs, and a medium or large client makes the determination. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

05/ vacancies

Sales director vacancies: reading the title

Sales director vacancies are advertised under several titles. Sales director, head of sales and VP sales often describe the same seat; which one an employer uses says more about its size and ownership than about the job. Regional sales director and channel sales director run part of a sales operation; group sales director runs it across several businesses.

Read the posting for three things: who the seat reports to, whether it carries a personal target as well as the team’s, and what it owns beyond sales. A sales director reporting to a commercial director runs the team and the pipeline. One reporting to the CEO may own marketing, customer success and pricing too, which is closer to a chief revenue officer: see fractional CRO and interim CRO for that seat, or commercial director jobs for the one above it in many businesses.

Commission is part of almost every sales director vacancy. Acas explains that an employee’s entitlement to commission should be in their written statement of employment particulars, and that the contract should say what happens to commission earned but not yet paid when the job ends. Ask for the plan in writing before you accept.

06/ permanent jobs

Permanent sales director jobs: what the seat pays

Permanent sales director jobs are full-time employed roles, and they are the ones listed first on this page. IT Jobs Watch puts the median advertised sales director salary at £100,000, with the 10th percentile at £80,000, from IT-sector permanent job ads. Exec Capital’s 2026 salary guide for sales directors puts base salaries at £70,000 at smaller businesses to £220,000 and above at enterprise and listed-company level.

Base is only part of the package. Exec Capital’s guide puts on-target earnings (OTE) at typically 1.5 to 2 times base, with mid-market OTE of £160,000–£260,000 and enterprise OTE of £250,000–£450,000. Exec Capital is an executive search firm, and these are its own figures. For the full pay picture, see sales director salary and sales director OTE.

Your employer must give you a written statement of employment particulars on your first day, covering your job title or a description of the work, pay, hours and holiday. Check that the commission plan, the target and any clawback are in it, or in the contract it points to.

Sales director jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a sales director.

On this page: the board shows the sales director roles on our board, with head of sales roles beside them, permanent roles first where the posting says full-time, then interim and fractional. Each kind of role also has its own page, from interim sales director jobs to fractional sales director jobs.
Senior roles leading a company’s sales team, pipeline, targets and forecast. Employers advertise them as sales director, head of sales or VP sales; read the reporting line and what the seat owns, not the title.
IT Jobs Watch puts the median advertised salary at £100,000 (IT-sector permanent job ads). Exec Capital’s 2026 guide gives base salaries of £70,000 to £220,000 and above by company size, with OTE typically 1.5 to 2 times base. See sales director salary.
Move up from a head of sales, sales manager or key account seat, lead a team that hits its number, and keep the evidence: revenue, period, team size and a referee who saw it. The ISP’s Sales Capability Framework sets out what a sales leader is measured on.
Often only the title. Where a business has both, the sales director sets the sales strategy and owns the forecast, and the head of sales runs the team day to day. See fractional head of sales jobs for that seat part of the week.
A sales director owns sales. A chief revenue officer owns every team that touches revenue, usually sales, marketing and customer success, and reports to the CEO. See chief revenue officer recruitment.
It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. In most cases a medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
Decide whether the seat is permanent, interim or for set days a week, then write down what it owns, who it reports to and the number it carries. To hire a sales director part of the week, start with that page. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5 after five-stage vetting.
