CRO jobs · permanent, interim and fractional
CRO jobs are chief revenue officer roles: the executive who owns a company’s revenue and runs sales, marketing and customer success against one number, answering to the chief executive and the board. They come as permanent full-time posts, interim assignments and fractional or part-time seats. The board below shows the roles on our board for this seat, permanent roles first where the posting says full-time.
We recruit permanent, interim, fractional, part-time and temporary revenue leaders, and non-executive directors. Hiring rather than looking? On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
CRO jobs: what the board holds
The board on this page holds the chief revenue officer roles on our board. Roles whose posting says full-time come first. Interim, fractional and part-time CRO roles follow, and where a posting states how the role is engaged, the listing says so. When there are few CRO roles, the board widens to the revenue leadership seats below it, such as head of sales, and says that it has.
What the seat does
A CRO owns the revenue plan and the forecast the board relies on, and leads the teams that deliver it: sales, marketing, customer success and often revenue operations. The seat is most common in subscription and software businesses, where renewals and expansion matter as much as new sales, so one executive owns the customer from first contact to renewal. For the full picture, see what a CRO does.
It is a seat with little time to prove itself. Harvard Business Review reported in 2024 that the average CRO tenure is 25 months, among the shortest in the C-suite, and that 62% of companies see revenue growth decline or stay flat in the year after a CRO change. The research is US-based. Ask in the interview what happened to the last person in the seat.
One seat, several ways to hold it
A permanent CRO is employed full-time and owns the number for years. An interim CRO holds the seat for a set period, to cover a departure or reset a sales team. A fractional CRO holds it for agreed days a week, often in a company moving from founder-led sales to its first revenue team. The title is the same; the contract, the days and the tax position are not.
02/ scope
How to get a CRO job
1. Carry a number, then lead people who do
No qualification is required. Most CROs come up through sales: carrying a quota, then leading a sales team, then running sales as head of sales or sales director. See head of sales jobs and sales director jobs for the seats before this one.
2. Widen beyond sales
The step to CRO is owning the functions around sales: marketing, customer success and the systems that join them. Two professional frameworks are useful signals. The Institute of Sales Professionals’ Sales Capability Framework is the basis of Ofqual’s specification of sales qualifications. CIM’s Chartered Marketer status requires graded membership, two years of continuing professional development and an assessment.
3. Show the board work
A CRO shortlist is decided on forecasts you made and met, retention and expansion as well as new business, and how you set targets and pay for a sales team. Commission has to be set out properly: Acas says an employee’s entitlement to commission should be in their written statement of employment particulars. If the seat comes with a directorship, the duties of a company director apply.
4. Pick the route in
Not every CRO job is permanent. Interim CRO jobs cover a gap or a reset for a set period; fractional CRO jobs hold the seat for set days a week. If you work through your own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply: status turns on how the engagement runs, and a medium or large client makes the determination. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

05/ chief revenue officer jobs
Chief revenue officer jobs the seat and its titles
Chief revenue officer jobs are advertised under several titles. Chief revenue officer and CRO are the same seat; VP of revenue or VP of sales can be the top revenue role where there is no CRO; chief sales officer usually covers sales alone. A chief commercial officer is the nearest seat with a different shape: wider on pricing, partnerships and the commercial model, and usually without customer success. See chief commercial officer jobs.
Check the abbreviation. CRO also stands for chief risk officer, a risk and governance role that in an FCA-regulated firm is one of the senior management functions needing approval before the holder starts. In a bank or insurer, a posting or salary table labelled CRO is likely to mean risk, not revenue.
Read the posting for what the seat owns: sales alone, sales and marketing, or the whole revenue engine including customer success and renewals. In a small company a CRO job is often hands-on sales leadership; in a larger business it is an executive seat over several revenue leaders.
06/ permanent cro jobs
Permanent CRO jobs the market and the pay
Permanent CRO jobs are full-time employed roles, and they are the ones listed first on this page. Exec Capital’s C-Suite Salary Guide 2026 puts revenue CROs at UK businesses with commercial revenue model complexity (SaaS, subscription and multi-channel retail) on base salaries of £120,000–£220,000 at mid-market scale, with variable pay tied to revenue on top. Exec Capital is a search firm, and these are its own ranges.
Base pay is often the smaller part of a revenue leader’s package. Commission or bonus against the revenue plan, equity in a growth or private equity-backed business, pension and notice period all vary, so compare offers line by line. For the pay picture across permanent, interim and fractional seats, see our chief revenue officer salary guide.
For a hirer, a permanent CRO search starts with what the seat owns and the number it carries. Our chief revenue officer recruitment page sets out how a permanent search works; to hire for set days a week, see how to hire a CRO.
