Current fractional Chief Customer Officer and customer-leadership roles

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Chief Customer Officer brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

What is a fractional Chief Customer Officer?

A fractional Chief Customer Officer is a senior executive who owns the customer relationship end to end (onboarding, service, support, customer success, renewals and the voice of the customer) for part of the week. The seat exists to join up what the customer experiences across teams that otherwise each own a piece of it.

CCO: Customer, not Commercial

The acronym is shared. A Chief Commercial Officer owns revenue, pricing, partnerships and go-to-market; for that seat, see hire a fractional CCO. A Chief Customer Officer owns what happens after the sale: whether customers get value, stay and grow. In a subscription business the two work closely on renewals and expansion, but they are different jobs, and a brief should name the one it means.

Chief Customer Officer or client services director?

Below the C-suite, the director-level seat for account management and customer success is a fractional client services director, hands-on with the accounts and the team. Choose a Chief Customer Officer when the job is cross-functional: getting product, sales, service and finance to act on what customers say. To hire a Chief Customer Officer part-time, define that remit and the days a week, then brief a shortlist against it.

02/ scope

Fractional Chief Customer Officer jobs: what the role owns

Customer strategy and measurement

Setting what good looks like and measuring it (retention, renewal, satisfaction and complaints) and linking those measures to revenue. The Customer Experience Professionals Association's CX Framework groups the discipline into five competencies: customer insights and understanding, customer experience strategy, metrics and ROI, design and implementation, and culture and accountability. It makes a useful checklist for a brief.

Service, support and customer success

Running or restructuring the teams customers talk to: support, onboarding, account management and success. The Institute of Customer Service's UK Customer Satisfaction Index, published twice a year, gives an external benchmark by sector; its January 2026 index stood at 78.2 out of 100.

Complaints, conduct and regulated sectors

In regulated sectors the customer seat carries rules. Financial services firms must meet the FCA's Consumer Duty, which sets four outcomes, two of them consumer understanding and consumer support. Phone and broadband providers must follow Ofcom's complaints-handling rules and belong to an alternative dispute resolution scheme. Any business selling to consumers is bound by the unfair commercial practices provisions of the DMCC Act 2024, set out in the CMA's guidance.

The voice of the customer across the business

Carrying customer evidence into product priorities, pricing decisions and the handover from sales, and making sure someone acts on it.

04/ timing

When to hire a fractional Chief Customer Officer

Four situations where a part-week customer executive usually earns the seat.

Scenario 01

Churn is climbing

Revenue leaking after the sale

New business is healthy but renewals and expansion are not, and no one owns the reasons.

Scenario 02

Service is split across teams

Four owners, one customer

Support, onboarding, account management and success each report somewhere different. A Chief Customer Officer joins them up.

Scenario 03

A regulator is asking questions

Outcomes to evidence

Consumer Duty outcomes need evidencing to the board, or complaints handling needs fixing, and there is no senior owner.

Scenario 04

Before a permanent appointment

Design the seat first

A fractional Chief Customer Officer sets up the function and shows whether the business needs the role full-time.

06/ recruitment

Chief Customer Officer recruitment how to assess the candidates

Chief Customer Officer recruitment starts with the brief, because the title covers several different jobs: a service-operations leader, a customer-success builder in a subscription business, a customer-experience strategist. Most candidates are strong in one or two of these. Decide which problem you are hiring for, which teams will report in, and which measures the role will answer for before you meet anyone.

Then test on evidence. Ask each candidate for a retention or satisfaction result they were accountable for, the teams they ran, and how they got product and sales to act on customer feedback. Take references from a CEO and a peer, not only from their team. Professional standing is one signal: the CXPA's CCXP certification requires three or more years of broad customer-experience practice and renewal every three years. Useful, but no substitute for references.

For a permanent, full-time appointment the ordinary employment steps apply: Acas covers job descriptions, interviews and offers, and every employee needs a right to work check. For either, brief us: a shortlist of 3–5, each through our five-stage vetting.

07/ interim

Interim Chief Customer Officer full-time cover or part-week leadership?

An interim Chief Customer Officer works full-time for a fixed period: to cover a departure, lead a recovery after a service failure, or run a remediation programme. A fractional Chief Customer Officer works part of the week over a longer period, building the function alongside the existing team. The test is the volume of C-level customer work each week. If a complaints backlog, a platform migration or a Consumer Duty review needs daily senior attention, interim fits; if the job is direction, measurement and joining up teams, fractional usually does.

An interim or fractional executive engaged through their own company falls under the off-payroll working (IR35) rules: status depends on how the engagement runs in practice, and a medium or large client makes the determination. HMRC's guidance for clients sets out who is in scope, CEST gives HMRC's view on a specific engagement, and our IR35 guide explains the tests.

Interim leaders often hand over to a fractional or permanent successor, so write the handover into the brief from the start. If the customer problem is really an operations problem (fulfilment, billing, systems), the neighbouring seat is a fractional COO.

08/ questions

Fractional Chief Customer Officer FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional Chief Customer Officer.

Write the brief around the customer problem (churn, service quality, complaints or a fragmented customer function), the teams that will report in and the days a week you can fund. Send it to us and we come back with a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each taken through our five-stage vetting, with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

The cost is the day rate multiplied by the days worked. We have not found a published UK benchmark for a fractional Chief Customer Officer's day rate, so we don't quote one; each candidate on your shortlist states their own. Our rates page covers the roles where published figures exist.

Sometimes. CCO can mean Chief Customer Officer, Chief Commercial Officer or Chief Compliance Officer. This page covers the Chief Customer Officer: retention, service and customer experience. For revenue, pricing and go-to-market, see hire a fractional CCO (Chief Commercial Officer).

Define the problem, the reporting lines and the measures first, then assess candidates on results they were accountable for and on references from a CEO and a peer. The CXPA's CX Framework is a useful checklist of the competencies involved. Through us you get a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim if the work needs a full-time senior owner for a fixed period, such as a complaints backlog, a remediation or a departure; fractional if the job is direction, measurement and joining up teams over a longer period. Either may be engaged through their own company, where IR35 status depends on how the engagement runs in practice and a medium or large client makes the determination (HMRC).

The seat carries more rules there. Under the FCA's Consumer Duty, firms must provide support that meets customers' needs without unreasonable barriers; telecoms providers must follow Ofcom's complaints-handling rules. Every business selling to consumers should know the CMA's consumer protection guidance for businesses.

Hire a Chief Customer Officer when the customer problem crosses functions and needs a C-suite voice: product, sales, service and finance all have to change. If the job is running key accounts and the client team hands-on, a fractional client services director is the better fit.

Live roles appear on the board on this page as postings arrive, widening to customer, commercial and operations leadership when there are none. See also fractional CRO jobs and fractional jobs UK for the full board.
