Interim Financial Controller · what one does, how long, what it costs

An interim financial controller is a qualified accountant who runs a company’s close, controls and reporting full-time for a fixed term, through a vacancy, long leave, a year-end or a system change, and then hands over. The seat sits below the board, under a finance director or CFO, and owns how the numbers are produced and checked.

This page sets out what an interim financial controller does, how long one stays and what one costs. To hire an interim financial controller, or to browse interim financial controller jobs, go to our interim financial controller hub. We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent finance leaders, and send a shortlist of 3–5 on every brief.

Current interim financial controller and finance roles

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a financial controller brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

What is an interim financial controller? The controller’s seat, full-time, for a fixed term

An interim financial controller does a permanent controller’s job for a defined period: the month-end close, the balance sheet reconciliations, the controls over payments, the management accounts and the audit file. The duty behind that work belongs to the company: under the Companies Act 2006, section 386, every company must keep adequate accounting records. The controller is the person who makes sure it does, day to day.

Where the seat sits

A financial controller is rarely a director. The statutory accounts carry a balance sheet signed by a director, so the interim controller prepares the numbers and the FD, CFO or another director signs them. That is the main line between this seat and an interim finance director, who answers for the numbers to the bank and the board.

What one does, first week to handover

The Institute of Interim Management’s guide to interim management sets out five stages: entry, diagnosis, proposal, implementation and exit. For a controller the diagnosis is the close timetable, the reconciliations that do not reconcile and the points the auditors raised last year. The proposal is a plan with dates. Exit leaves a close timetable, reconciliations and controls the next person can run. For the permanent role, see what a financial controller does.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim financial controller

Write the outcome and a date into the brief: the audit signed, the new ledger live, cover to a named month. Check the qualification with the body; ICAEW offers verification of membership to employment agencies and new employers, and CIMA’s CGMA Professional Qualification is awarded after the exams and a practical experience requirement. Ask each candidate to walk you through a close they ran and an audit they saw through.

Our interim financial controller hub covers the hiring steps and the engagement routes, with interim financial controller jobs on its board. We send a shortlist of 3–5 with day rate or pay, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting.

04/ timing

When to hire an interim financial controller

Four situations that need a full-time controller for a period, and what each should leave behind.

Scenario 01

The controller has gone

Leaves: a close on time, every month

A resignation or dismissal with the month-end due in weeks. The interim keeps the numbers right and helps write the brief for the permanent hire.

Scenario 02

Long leave

Leaves: a seat to come back to

Maternity or other long leave, with a return date. GOV.UK gives maternity cover as an example of a fixed-term employee, which is one way to engage the interim.

Scenario 03

Year-end

Leaves: a clean audit file

A first audit, open findings from last year, or a team that has not prepared statutory accounts before. The interim owns the file and the auditors’ questions.

Scenario 04

A new system

Leaves: a ledger that works

A ledger or ERP migration that must not break the monthly close. The interim owns the chart of accounts, the cut-over and the parallel run.

06/ interim financial controller

Interim financial controller: how long one stays, and what one costs

No source publishes an average term for interim controllers alone. Across every discipline, the IIM Interim Management Survey 2026 puts the average assignment at 10.0 months and the average interim day rate at £907, or £1,004 in the private sector. Those are all-discipline averages, not a controller’s rate.

We know of no verified published day-rate range for an interim financial controller, so we do not quote one. Two benchmarks sit either side. For a permanent controller, Robert Half’s 2026 guide gives a median of £76,750, with the middle half between £63,000 and £92,500. For a fractional controller, Accountancy Capital’s 2026 market report gives £450–£650 a day in London and the South East and £400–£550 elsewhere; that is part-week work, not interim. The same report puts a £90,000 permanent controller at roughly £108,000 to an employer once National Insurance, pension and benefits are added.

An interim costs the day rate or salary times the days worked, with no commitment after the term. Every shortlist we send sets out each candidate’s rate, so you compare real figures. For permanent pay in more detail, see financial controller salary.

07/ ir35

IR35 and the interim controller

An interim controller may be your fixed-term employee, an agency worker, or a contractor through their own company. Only the last brings the off-payroll working rules (IR35) into play. In most cases the client decides the status; for a small client outside the public sector, the controller’s own company decides (HMRC guidance for clients). Status turns on how the assignment runs in practice. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ questions

Interim financial controller FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim financial controller.

A qualified accountant who runs a company’s close, controls and reporting full-time for a fixed term, through a vacancy, long leave, a year-end or a system change, then hands over. The seat sits below the board, under a finance director or CFO.
Owns the month-end close, the balance sheet reconciliations, the payment controls, the management accounts and the audit file for the term, then hands over a close timetable and controls the next person can run.
As long as the outcome takes, often set by a return date, a year-end or a go-live. No source publishes an average for controllers alone; across all disciplines, the IIM Interim Management Survey 2026 puts the average assignment at 10.0 months.
The day rate or salary times the days worked. We know of no verified published interim range, so we do not quote one; we set out each candidate’s rate on the shortlist. For comparison, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent financial controller is £76,750.
Write the outcome and a date into the brief, choose the level (controller or finance director), check the ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA membership with the body, and settle the engagement route and IR35 before the start. Our interim financial controller hub sets out the steps; we send a shortlist of 3–5.
An interim controller works full-time for a fixed term. A fractional controller works part of the week on an ongoing basis; Accountancy Capital gives £450–£650 a day in London and the South East. See fractional financial controller jobs and part-time financial controller jobs.
When the close and controls need a full-time owner for a period: the controller has gone, they are on long leave, a year-end or audit must not slip, or a new ledger has to go live without breaking the month-end.
Rarely. The statutory accounts carry a balance sheet signed by a director, so the controller prepares the numbers and a director signs. If the seat needs someone who answers to the bank and the board, look at an interim finance director.
