Interim financial controller jobs · hire an interim FC, or hire a financial controller for good
Interim financial controller jobs are full-time, fixed-term roles: a qualified controller runs the close, the controls and the year-end while the permanent seat is empty or a project needs one. The live roles are below. For hirers, this page sets out when to bring in an interim, and how to hire a financial controller on a permanent contract instead.
On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting.

01/ the role
What an interim financial controller does, and when a business needs one
A financial controller owns the numbers below board level: the month-end close, the balance sheet reconciliations, the controls over payments, the management accounts and the audit file. The legal floor is the Companies Act 2006, section 386: every company must keep adequate accounting records, sufficient to show and explain its transactions and to disclose its financial position with reasonable accuracy at any time. An interim financial controller does that work full-time, for a fixed period, and hands over when it ends.
The four usual triggers
Year-end. Statutory accounts are prepared from the company’s records at the end of its financial year and go to shareholders, Companies House and HMRC, and some companies need an auditor’s report (GOV.UK). A controller who has taken businesses through audit before shortens the process. This year there is a second reason: the FRC’s Periodic Review 2024 of FRS 102 has a principal effective date of 1 January 2026, so many first year-ends under the revised standard are still ahead.
A system migration. Moving to a new ledger or ERP needs someone to own the chart of accounts, the data cut-over and the parallel run, while the close still happens on time. The permanent team rarely has the capacity to do both.
Maternity or other long leave. The controller is away for months and will come back. GOV.UK gives covering for maternity leave as an example of a fixed-term employee, which is one way to engage the cover.
A departure. The controller has resigned or been let go, the close is due in weeks, and a permanent search will take longer. The interim keeps the numbers right and often helps write the brief for the successor.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim financial controller
1. Write the mandate and the end point
Say what the interim will own (the close timetable, the audit, the migration), who they report to, and what must be true when they leave. An interim with no end point drifts into a permanent role without a permanent search.
2. Choose the level
If the gap is the controls and the close, a controller is right. If the board needs strategy, lender or investor reporting, hire an interim finance director; for fundraising or a transaction, an interim CFO may fit better. If the need is a few days a week with no end date, hire a fractional financial controller or see part-time financial controller jobs.
3. Check qualifications with the body
Accountancy Capital’s 2026 market report notes that controllers in this market are almost universally qualified through ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA. Check the claim. ICAEW offers verification of membership to employment agencies and new employers. The ACCA Qualification combines exams, ethics and professional experience, and CIMA’s CGMA Professional Qualification is awarded after the exams and a practical experience requirement. Then ask each candidate to walk you through a close they ran and an audit they took a business through.
4. Settle the engagement route and IR35
An interim controller can be your fixed-term employee, an agency worker, or a contractor through their own limited company. For the last, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. Status is decided by how the engagement runs. In most cases the client decides, and a medium or large client makes the determination; a small client outside the public sector leaves it to the worker’s own company. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.
5. What it costs
An interim costs the day rate multiplied by the days worked. We do not publish an interim financial controller day-rate range, because we have no source we can verify for one. Every shortlist we send sets out each candidate’s day rate or pay, so you compare real figures before you interview.

04/ interim financial controller jobs
Interim financial controller jobs: what candidates should know
Interim financial controller jobs are usually full-time for a set term: covering leave, a vacancy, a year-end or a systems project. Some are advertised; many are filled through a recruiter’s search. The board on this page shows live interim financial controller and finance leadership roles from the last three months, labelled as what they are.
Ask how a role is engaged before you apply, because it changes your rights and your tax. On a fixed-term contract you are the company’s employee. Through an agency you may be an agency worker: GOV.UK says you are one if you have a contract with an agency but work temporarily for a hirer, and not one if the agency found you permanent or fixed-term employment. Through your own limited company, IR35 may apply, and the client’s status determination is the one to read.
Hirers will ask about the closes you have run, the audits you have led, the systems you have moved between, and how soon you can start. For interim roles above controller level, see interim finance director jobs; for fractional and part-time finance roles, see fractional finance jobs.
05/ interim financial controller
Interim financial controller or fractional: which fits the gap
An interim financial controller answers a gap with an end date: full-time, for a set period, then a handover. A fractional controller answers a need that does not fill a week: a share of the role, on an ongoing basis, often alongside other clients. A part-time controller works set days as an employee or contractor.
Choose by the shape of the work. A year-end, a migration or a leave period is a project with a finish line, which suits an interim. Month-end control for a business that has outgrown its bookkeeper suits a fractional or part-time controller. Accountancy Capital’s market report describes a third pattern: a fractional controller used as a bridge while a permanent search runs.
Whatever the route, the controller should leave behind a close timetable, reconciliations and controls the next person can run. Ask for that in the mandate.
06/ hire a financial controller
Hire a financial controller: permanent or interim
A permanent financial controller suits a business whose close, controls and reporting need an owner every day, with no end in sight. An interim suits a gap. Many businesses use one, then the other: the interim steadies the function and helps specify the permanent role.
Compare costs on the same basis. Accountancy Capital’s Fractional Financial Controller Market Report 2026 puts a £90,000 permanent Financial Controller at roughly £108,000 to an employer once National Insurance, pension and benefits are added, before recruitment cost or notice period. An interim costs the day rate multiplied by the days worked, with no employment commitment after the term. For finance hires above the controller, see finance director recruitment or fractional FD jobs.
We recruit permanent, interim, fractional, part-time and temporary finance leaders. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5 with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
