The working pattern
What changes when the finance director is interim?
An interim finance director holds the whole seat for the length of the assignment, rather than a part of the week. The board must say what the assignment is for and who takes the seat back when it ends.
The illustrative brief: a business whose finance director left before year-end. The finance director resigned with the audit three months away and a lender covenant test due. The finance team can run the month, but nobody can lead the audit or talk to the bank.
The appointment owns: The interim finance director runs the audit, the covenant reporting and the bank relationship until the permanent appointment starts.
Another owner retains: The board keeps the permanent appointment and any refinancing decision; the financial controller keeps the monthly close.
The case is illustrative; it does not describe a Fractional Quest placement.

Assessment
How should you assess finance director candidates?
Put the same work and evidence in front of each candidate before comparing answers.
- The same situation beforeAsk for an assignment like this one (an audit, a refinancing, a turnaround) and what was handed over at the end.
- Speed into the numbersGive each candidate the same management accounts and ask what they would check in the first week.
- Lender and auditor workAsk a former chair or lender how the candidate handled a difficult reporting conversation.
- Handover disciplineAsk what the candidate left in writing at the end of their last assignment.
Acas recommends a consistent, fair selection process: choosing who to interview.
Vetting
What happens before anyone reaches your shortlist?
Five stages before a candidate reaches a shortlist of three to five.
- Pedigree screenTenureWe verify prior tenure in the seat, at the scale and stage you need. No consultant presenting as an executive.
- Mandate fitFitFit to your stage, sector and the problem the seat exists to solve, not a CV keyword.
- Reference deep-diveVerifyWe take references ourselves, from recent clients and boards: what they delivered, not what they titled it.
- ShortlistShortlistThree to five candidates, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
- Kick-offStartScope, first-month outcomes and the contract agreed before day one.
The full process is on how we vet.
The right pattern
Does this hiring pattern fit the work?
Test the amount of the week, the expected end and the continuity needed before writing the contract.

Brief us on what the role must own, how it will work and when it must start. We come back with a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting.
