Fractional marketing manager jobs · hire a fractional marketing manager

Fractional marketing manager jobs are hands-on marketing roles held for part of the week: one experienced manager runs the campaigns, the channels, the content calendar and the agencies for a business on agreed days, often alongside other clients. To hire a fractional marketing manager, write down what must ship each month, then the days that takes.

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent marketers, and non-executive directors. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Marketing leadership roles are on the board below.

Live marketing leadership roles

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Marketing Manager brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

Fractional marketing manager jobs: what the seat runs, week to week

A marketing manager turns a plan into work that ships. The National Careers Service’s marketing manager profile lists the core of it: creating marketing and social media strategies, planning and managing launches, overseeing and approving campaign content, budgets and targets, working with in-house or external agencies, and reporting on how well campaigns worked. Fractional marketing manager jobs are that job, held for one to three agreed days a week instead of five.

A typical month in the seat

Most of the week goes on the calendar and the people who deliver it. The campaign plan for the quarter; briefs to the designer, the copywriter and the paid-media agency; the email programme and the website updates; the events and the sales collateral; and one report that says what the spend returned. A good fractional marketing manager leaves a written plan and a clean handover at the end of each day in the business, so the work keeps moving between visits.

Manager, not leader, and why that matters

The manager seat executes a direction someone else has set. That someone is often a founder, a managing director or a fractional marketing director. Where nobody sets direction at all, a manager will keep busy on the wrong things. For the full ladder from manager to CMO, with pay at each level, see the fractional marketing jobs hub.

What fractional marketing manager jobs pay

No source we trust publishes a fractional marketing manager day rate, so we do not quote one; every candidate on a shortlist states their own. The full-time benchmark is published. Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts a marketing manager at £37,500 (25th percentile) to £52,750 (75th), median £46,750. A fractional cost is the day rate times the days worked.

Where the roles are listed

The public board below lists marketing leadership roles: head of marketing, marketing director and head of growth, with CMO roles as a fallback. Manager-level postings are not shown on public pages; signed-in members see them in their own room. If you are a manager moving up, the fractional head of marketing page sets out the next seat.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional marketing manager

1. Check that direction exists

Write down who decides the positioning, the target customer and the budget. If the answer is a person who will stay involved, a manager is the right seat. If the answer is nobody, start one level up and brief a fractional marketing director or a fractional CMO first.

2. List what ships, then count the days

Name the monthly outputs: campaigns, emails, the content calendar, events, agency reviews, the report. Then estimate the days honestly. A business whose agencies do most of the delivery needs fewer days than one where the manager writes, builds and sends everything in-house.

3. Decide generalist or specialist

A generalist covers the whole mix at moderate depth. If most of the spend and results come through search, paid social, email and analytics, you want the digital specialist (below). If the work is mostly events, partners and sales material, say so in the brief.

4. Test the work and check the standing

Give candidates a real brief from your business and ask for a one-page plan for the first month. Ask to see campaigns they ran and the results they reported. Chartered Marketer status from the Chartered Institute of Marketing asks for graded CIM membership, two consecutive years of CPD and an online assessment; it is one signal among several. Take references from the founder or director they reported to.

What we do on a marketing manager brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. Every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first. If the brief reads as a director’s job, we say so before we shortlist.

03/ comparison

Fractional marketing manager vs fractional marketing director

Three marketing seats that blur in a smaller business. Choose by what is missing: hands on the work, someone to lead the function, or a plan.

04/ timing

When to hire a fractional marketing manager

Three situations where part-week, hands-on marketing tends to fit.

Scenario 01

The plan exists, the work does not ship

Delivery

A founder or director has set the direction, but campaigns slip because nobody has the days to run them.

Scenario 02

Agencies with no one to brief them

Agencies

Several suppliers bill every month and nobody in-house writes the briefs or checks the results against a target.

Scenario 03

Before the first full-time marketer

Scope

You know marketing needs an owner but not the shape of the permanent job. A few months part-week shows the real workload.

06/ digital or generalist

Fractional digital marketing manager or a generalist: which one to brief

A fractional digital marketing manager is the specialist version of the same seat. Where a generalist marketing manager covers the whole mix, from events and sales material to email and social, the digital manager goes deep on the channels that are bought and measured online: paid search and paid social, organic search, email and CRM automation, the website and the analytics that tie them together.

Brief the digital seat when most of your spend and most of your leads come through those channels. Brief a generalist when the mix is broad and no single channel dominates. Pay reflects the depth: Robert Half’s 2026 guide puts a full-time digital marketing manager at £40,000 to £63,750, median £51,500, against a £46,750 median for a marketing manager.

For the digital-only seat in full, including the head of digital and digital marketing director above it, see fractional digital marketing jobs. If the digital work centres on search, a fractional SEO lead may be the narrower hire.

07/ manager or director

Fractional marketing manager vs fractional marketing director: running the plan, or writing it

The difference is who answers for the plan. A fractional marketing manager runs campaigns and channels against a direction someone else has set. A fractional marketing director writes the marketing strategy, sets the budget, leads the team and reports to the CEO on what marketing returned. The most common mistake is to hire a manager when the real gap is direction: the work ships on time and still misses.

The full-time benchmarks show the step. Robert Half’s 2026 figures put a marketing manager at a £46,750 median and a marketing director at £70,000 to £90,000, median £79,500; a CMO sits at a £147,000 median. A fractional arrangement buys the level you need for the days you need it.

Some businesses need both, briefly: a director for a day a week to set the plan and a manager for two days to run it. For the director seat, see fractional marketing director jobs; for every level on one page, the fractional marketing jobs hub.

08/ the rules

The rules a marketing manager should already know

The manager is the person who presses send, so the compliance sits with the seat. The ICO’s direct marketing and PECR guidance covers consent for email and text marketing and the rules on cookies and tracking. The CAP Code, enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority, must be followed by all advertisers, agencies and media, and covers misleading claims, promotions and the use of data for marketing.

Ask candidates how they have handled consent records, an unsubscribe request and a claim a sales team wanted to make. The answers tell you more than a list of tools.

09/ ir35

Employed part-time or fractional through a company: the contract question

A fractional marketing manager is either employed on reduced hours or works through their own limited company. Employed part-time, they are protected from being treated less favourably than an equivalent full-time worker, with pay, holiday and pension opportunities in proportion (GOV.UK on part-time workers’ rights).

Through a company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. In most cases the client decides the worker’s status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides, and HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, so set out control, substitution and the days in the contract and then run it that way. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

10/ questions

Fractional marketing manager jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional marketing manager.

Hands-on marketing roles held for part of the week. The manager runs campaigns, channels, content and agencies for a business on agreed days, often alongside other clients, against a direction set by a founder, MD or marketing leader.

Check that someone sets the direction, list what must ship each month and count the days, decide generalist or digital specialist, then test candidates on a real brief and take references from the person they reported to. If nobody sets direction, hire a fractional marketing director first.

The day rate times the days worked. No source we trust publishes a fractional marketing manager day rate, so we set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist. For comparison, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a full-time marketing manager is £46,750, within a range of £37,500 to £52,750 (Robert Half).

Runs the digital channels for part of the week: paid search and social, organic search, email and CRM, the website and analytics, usually directing agencies and freelancers. Choose the digital seat when most of your spend and leads come through those channels. See fractional digital marketing jobs.

A manager runs the plan; a director writes it and answers for it. The director sets strategy, budget and the team and reports to the CEO. Robert Half’s 2026 full-time medians are £46,750 for a marketing manager and £79,500 for a marketing director.

As many as the monthly outputs need. Count what must ship, subtract what agencies deliver, and set the days from what is left. Agree how urgent requests are handled between days before the start date.

None is required by law. CIM qualifications and Chartered Marketer status show professional standing; results from a business like yours matter more. Ask for the campaigns and the reports.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on the label. In most cases a medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.

Fractional when the work fills part of the week. Interim when a seat is empty and needs full-time cover for a fixed term. Permanent when running marketing is a full-time job; for a permanent leader above the manager, see marketing director recruitment.
