Fractional SEO lead jobs · hire a fractional head of SEO, or hire one for good

Fractional SEO lead jobs are senior search roles held for part of the week: an SEO lead or head of SEO who owns how a business is found in search, sets the technical and content plan, and directs the developers, writers and agencies who carry it out. To hire a fractional head of SEO, decide what search has to deliver, then how many days it needs.

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent marketing leaders. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live growth and marketing leadership roles are on the board below.

Live growth and marketing leadership roles

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a SEO Lead brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

Fractional SEO lead jobs: what the seat owns

A fractional SEO lead owns organic search as a channel. Google’s own list of what SEOs do is a fair outline of the scope: reviewing site content and structure; technical advice on hosting, redirects, error pages and JavaScript; content development; keyword research; training; expertise in specific markets; and, now, optimising for generative AI. The difference from an agency is ownership. A fractional head of SEO sits on your side, sets the priorities, and checks the work others do against them.

The family of search and growth roles

The same part-week seat sits beside several others. If the brief is growth across every channel, paid and organic, with experiments and a number to hit, hire a fractional head of growth. If the gap is running paid, email, social and search day to day, see fractional digital marketing. For an online shop where search sits inside trading, hire a fractional ecommerce director. For board-level marketing, fractional CMO jobs.

What fractional SEO lead jobs pay

No UK source we trust publishes an SEO lead or head of SEO salary or day rate, so we do not quote one; every candidate on a shortlist states their own. For a neighbouring seat, Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts a full-time head of marketing median at £66,250. A fractional fee is the day rate times the days worked.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional head of SEO

1. Write down what search has to deliver

Start with the business problem. Traffic that fell and has not come back, a redesign or a platform change on the way, a content programme with no plan behind it, or a board asking why competitors outrank you. Then decide the days a week, who the role reports to, and who will make the changes it asks for.

2. Learn the basics before you interview

Google suggests reading its SEO starter guide first, so you can tell when someone proposes a technique that is not recommended. The Search Essentials set out what makes a page eligible to appear at all: the technical requirements, the spam policies and the key best practices.

3. Interview the way Google suggests

Google’s guide to hiring an SEO lists questions worth asking: examples of previous work, whether they follow the Search Essentials, what results they expect and in what timeframe, and how they measure success. It warns against anyone who guarantees first place, and suggests granting only read access to Search Console during an audit. Take references from the businesses they worked for.

4. Settle the engagement

Agree the days, the outcomes for the first three months, what the SEO lead can change on the site without sign-off, and which developer or agency time they can call on. If they will work through their own company, check IR35 before the start date.

What we do on a search brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. Every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

05/ content marketing

Fractional content marketing: under the SEO lead, or its own seat

Fractional content marketing is a senior content lead for part of the week: someone who sets what the business publishes, for whom and why, and runs the writers, editors and freelancers who make it. In many companies it sits under the SEO lead, because most of the content is written to be found. It becomes its own seat when content also carries the brand, sales enablement or a newsletter that has nothing to do with search.

Either way, write for people first. Google’s guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content asks whether a page offers original information or analysis, whether it leaves a reader feeling they have learned enough to reach their goal, and warns against producing lots of content on many topics in the hope that some of it ranks. Its spam policies say sites that break them may rank lower or not appear at all.

Sponsored content has rules of its own. The ASA’s advice on advertisement features says the CAP Code requires marketing communications to be obviously identifiable as such, and a label such as “Advertisement Feature” is a straightforward way to do it. A content lead who places paid articles or works with influencers should know this.

06/ which seat

SEO lead vs head of growth one channel or all of them

An SEO lead is a specialist: one channel, owned in depth, from the site’s technical health to the content plan. A head of growth is a generalist across channels, paid and organic, running experiments from acquisition through to retention and answering for a growth number. The SEO lead makes search work; the head of growth decides how much search matters against everything else.

Hire the SEO lead when organic search is already, or clearly should be, a main source of customers and the problems are specific: a migration, a traffic drop, a content programme with no plan. Hire the head of growth when you do not yet know which channels work. For that seat, see fractional head of growth jobs.

07/ migrations

Redesigns and migrations when an SEO lead matters most

Google’s own advice is that a great time to hire is when you are considering a site redesign, the earlier the better, or planning to launch a new site. Its guide to site moves and migrations recommends a URL map from old to new, permanent redirects, changing one thing at a time, and expecting rankings to fluctuate while Google recrawls. It notes that permanent redirects do not cause a loss in PageRank.

An SEO lead watches the move through Search Console, which shows how Google crawls, indexes and serves a site and reports traffic by query, page and country. A fractional lead engaged for a migration often steps down to fewer days once the new site is stable.

08/ ir35

IR35 and fractional SEO roles employed part-time or through a company

A fractional SEO lead is either employed on a part-time contract or works through their own limited company. Where they work through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. In most cases the client decides the worker’s status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides.

Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, so set out control, substitution and the days in the contract and then run it that way. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ questions

Fractional SEO lead jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional head of SEO.

Senior search roles held for part of the week: an SEO lead or head of SEO who owns organic search for one business for an agreed number of days, often alongside other clients. They set the technical and content plan and direct the developers, writers and agencies who carry it out.

Write down what search has to deliver, then the days a week and who will make the changes. Read Google’s SEO starter guide first, interview with the questions in its guide to hiring an SEO, grant only read access to Search Console during an audit, take references yourself, and settle IR35 before the start date.

The day rate times the days worked. No UK source we trust publishes an SEO lead day rate, so we set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist. For a neighbouring seat, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a full-time head of marketing is £66,250.

A senior content lead for part of the week, who sets what the business publishes and runs the people who make it. It often sits under the SEO lead. Google’s guidance asks for helpful, people-first content, and the CAP Code requires sponsored content to be obviously identifiable as advertising.

An SEO lead owns one channel, organic search, in depth. A head of growth works across every channel, paid and organic, runs experiments and answers for a growth number. Hire the SEO lead when search is clearly a main source of customers; hire the head of growth when you do not yet know which channels work.

No. Google says there is no guarantee that any site will be added to its index, and its guide to hiring an SEO says to find someone else if they guarantee first place in results. It also says appearing in organic results costs nothing and Google never accepts money to rank sites (Google Search Central).

Before a redesign, a platform change or a new site, the earlier the better; when organic traffic has fallen and not recovered; or when a content programme has no plan. A migration is a common reason for a short, heavier engagement that steps down once the new site is stable.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. In most cases a medium or large client decides the status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.
