Fractional FP&A salary · day rate, month, year

What a fractional FP&A manager earns, by the day, the week and the year

A fractional FP&A salary is a day rate multiplied by the days sold.

FD Capital’s 2026 guide puts a fractional FP&A manager at £425–£600 a day and a fractional head of FP&A at £500–£750.

By the kind of business, it runs from £300–£450 a day at an early-stage company to £475–£675 at a PE-backed one.

Most fractional FP&A work is one or two days a week per client.

When you hire a fractional FP&A manager through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional FP&A roles on the board

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Fractional FP&A brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How a fractional FP&A manager is paid, and what sets the rate

A fractional FP&A manager runs the budget, the forecast and the board numbers for a business part of the week, usually alongside other clients.

FD Capital describes the model as one professional working across two or three businesses at once, on a day rate, typically one to two days a week each.

There is no salary, bonus or employer pension.

The business sets the rate first.

FD Capital puts fractional FP&A at £300–£450 a day for an early-stage company before Series A, £400–£550 for a scale-up with £2m–£15m revenue, £450–£650 in the mid-market (£15m–£50m) and £475–£675 at a PE-backed portfolio company.

Fundraising or exit modelling, priced as a project, runs £500–£750.

Level comes next.

FD Capital’s 2026 rate guide, weighted towards London and the South East, puts a fractional FP&A analyst at £300–£425 a day, an FP&A manager at £425–£600 and a head of FP&A at £500–£750.

An FP&A manager can also be employed part-time on a salary.

A part-time employee must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one (GOV.UK).

FD Capital puts a part-time FP&A manager working two to three days a week at £30,000–£52,000 pro rata, and says London premiums of 15–25% typically apply.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional FP&A manager

1. Count the days the cycle needs

List the work: the monthly reforecast, the board pack, the annual budget, the cash forecast, the investor model.

Then estimate the days a month it takes.

Budget season needs more than the rest of the year, so agree how the days flex.

2. Match the level to the business

An early-stage company needs a working model and a forecast the board trusts.

A PE-backed business needs investor-grade reporting to a timetable.

Pay for the level the next year needs.

3. Agree access and cadence in writing

Decide which systems the FP&A lead can see, when actuals close and when the forecast is due.

A day rate works when both sides know what each day is for.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent finance professionals, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

To start, hire a fractional FP&A lead through the brief on the jobs page.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

07/ economics

Rate is not income: what a fractional FP&A manager keeps

The day rate is what the client pays, not what the FP&A manager takes home.

Most fractional finance professionals invoice through their own limited company and take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit, after Corporation Tax.

Out of the same income they fund their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell.

Tax status changes the number too.

FD Capital quotes its fractional FP&A rates outside IR35, but status turns on how each engagement runs.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the contractor’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so a fractional FP&A manager with three clients can have three different answers.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ fractional head of fp&a

Fractional head of FP&A day rates

A fractional head of FP&A sets up the planning function, chooses the method and the tools, and hands the routine to an analyst or manager.

FD Capital’s 2026 guide puts the seat at £500–£750 a day, against £425–£600 for a fractional FP&A manager.

One day a week at those rates comes to about £2,165–£3,250 a month, and two days to about £4,330–£6,495 (× 4.33 weeks, our arithmetic).

For fundraising or exit modelling priced as a project, FD Capital gives £500–£750 a day.

10/ the year

How much fractional FP&A managers make in a year

Multiply the rate by the days sold.

At FD Capital’s £425–£600 for a fractional FP&A manager, each day a week sold for 52 weeks bills £22,100–£31,200 (our arithmetic, before any weeks off).

FD Capital describes the model as two or three clients at once; three clients at one day a week each would bill £66,300–£93,600 (our arithmetic), if the diary fills.

In practice it rarely fills every week.

Holidays, the gaps between clients and the time spent finding the next one all come off the total.

A fractional FP&A salary is the profit of a small business, not a rate multiplied by a full year.

To model your own position, start from the days you can realistically sell and use the rate calculator.

11/ the comparison

Full-time salary vs fractional pay: comparing like with like

A permanent FP&A manager is paid a salary and package, with employer’s National Insurance and pension on top; see FP&A salary for those benchmarks.

An interim is paid by the day for full-time cover over a fixed period; see interim FP&A salary.

A fractional FP&A manager is paid only for the days bought.

Compare the total cost for the days the business needs, not the headline figures.

Count the days the planning cycle needs, match the level to the business, and agree access and cadence before the rate. See hire a fractional FP&A for the brief.
The day rate times the days. FD Capital puts a fractional FP&A manager at £425–£600 a day, so one day a week is about £1,840–£2,600 a month (our arithmetic). We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
It decides how the fees are taxed. A medium or large client makes the status determination for each engagement; for a small private-sector client, the contractor’s own company decides (HMRC). Status depends on how each engagement runs in practice, so it is set per contract, not per person.
