Fractional financial controller salary · day rate, retainer, year

What a fractional financial controller earns, by the day, the month and the year

A fractional financial controller is paid a day rate, not a salary.

Accountancy Capital’s 2026 market report puts the day rate at £450–£650 in London and the South East and £400–£550 regionally.

On a retainer, one day a week runs £1,800–£2,800 a month in London and £1,600–£2,400 regionally.

What a fractional financial controller salary comes to over a year depends on the days sold across clients, not the rate alone.

When you hire a fractional financial controller through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

02/ the role

How a fractional financial controller is paid, and what sets the rate

A fractional financial controller owns the close, the controls and the reporting for part of the week, often for several businesses at once.

The client pays a day rate, or a fixed monthly retainer for an agreed number of days.

There is no salary, bonus or employer pension.

The work sets the rate first.

Accountancy Capital puts regulated or complex work at £550–£750 a day in London and the South East and £475–£650 regionally, and project work such as a systems change or a first audit at £500–£750 and £450–£650.

It says practitioners are almost universally qualified through ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA; ICAEW’s status confirmation checks a member’s standing.

Place still counts.

Every band in the report is higher in London and the South East than in the rest of the country.

A controller can also be employed part-time on a salary.

A part-time employee must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one, with some benefits applied pro rata (GOV.UK).

For roles on a set number of days each week, see part-time financial controller jobs.

03/ scope

How to hire a fractional financial controller

1. Count the days the work needs

List what the controller must own: the month-end close, the management accounts, the balance sheet reconciliations, the audit, the systems.

Then estimate the days a month it takes.

The days set the retainer; the work sets the rate.

2. Match the profile to the work

A steady close in a single company does not need a regulated-firm specialist.

A first audit, a new system or a group consolidation does.

Pay for the experience the next year needs.

3. Agree scope, access and rhythm

Write down which days, which systems and which reports the controller will have.

A retainer works when both sides know what it buys.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent finance leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

To start, hire a fractional FC; for roles on the board, see fractional financial controller jobs.

09/ economics

Rate is not income: what a fractional controller keeps

The day rate is what the client pays, not what the controller takes home.

Accountancy Capital says fractional controllers are typically engaged through their own limited company.

They take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit, after Corporation Tax.

Out of the same income they fund their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell.

Tax status changes the number too.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the controller’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so a fractional controller with three clients can have three different answers.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

11/ the year

How much fractional controllers make in a year

Multiply the rate by the days sold.

At Accountancy Capital’s London band of £450–£650, each day a week sold for 52 weeks bills £23,400–£33,800; at the regional band of £400–£550, £20,800–£28,600 (our arithmetic, before any weeks off).

Two clients at one day a week each is twice that.

Accountancy Capital’s own example: a two-day retainer at £4,200 a month is £50,400 a year.

In practice the diary rarely fills every week.

Holidays, the gaps between clients and the time spent finding the next one all come off the total.

A fractional financial controller salary is the profit of a small business, not a rate multiplied by a full year.

To model your own position, start from the days you can realistically sell and use the rate calculator.

12/ the comparison

Full-time salary vs fractional pay: comparing like with like

A permanent controller is paid a salary and package, with employer’s National Insurance and pension on top; Robert Half’s 2026 median is £76,750, and Accountancy Capital puts a £90,000 permanent controller at roughly £108,000 to the employer.

See financial controller salary for those benchmarks.

An interim is paid by the day for full-time cover over a fixed period; see interim financial controller salary.

A fractional controller is paid only for the days bought.

Compare the total cost for the days the business needs, not the headline figures.

13/ questions

Fractional financial controller salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional financial controller.

A fractional financial controller has no salary from the client: they are paid a day rate or monthly retainer. On Accountancy Capital’s 2026 retainers, one day a week in London is £1,800–£2,800 a month, or £21,600–£33,600 over a year (× 12, our arithmetic). Annual income depends on how many days they sell across clients.
Accountancy Capital’s 2026 market report puts it at £450–£650 a day in London and the South East and £400–£550 regionally. Regulated or complex work runs £550–£750 and £475–£650.
Accountancy Capital’s 2026 retainers in London and the South East: £1,800–£2,800 a month for one day a week, £3,500–£5,500 for two days and £5,200–£7,800 for three. Regionally: £1,600–£2,400, £3,200–£4,600 and £4,700–£6,600.
There is no single figure. At Accountancy Capital’s London band of £450–£650 a day, each day a week sold for 52 weeks bills £23,400–£33,800 (our arithmetic). From that come the costs of running their own company, their pension, unbilled days and tax.
Count the days the work needs, match the profile to the work, and agree scope, access and rhythm before the rate. See hire a fractional FC.
The day rate times the days. Accountancy Capital puts the day rate at £450–£650 in London and the South East and the retainer at £1,800–£2,800 a month for one day a week there. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
They are paid on different bases. Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent controller is £76,750 in base salary, before employer’s National Insurance and pension. A two-day retainer in London runs £42,000–£66,000 a year (× 12, our arithmetic). See financial controller salary.
It depends on how each engagement runs in practice, not on the contract’s label. A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small private-sector client, the controller’s own company decides (HMRC). Status is set per contract, not per person.
