Chief commercial officer salary · 2026

What a chief commercial officer earns, by region, level and package

Robert Walters puts the chief commercial officer salary at £100,000 to £281,000 in 2026, depending on organisation size, industry and location, with £208,000–£281,000 in London. Coburg Banks, a sales recruiter, gives a base range of £110,000–£185,000 with a median of around £145,000. Bonus and equity sit on top of both.

The seat sits above the commercial director, so its pay starts where a director’s often tops out. When you hire a chief commercial officer through us, permanent, fractional or interim, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Live commercial and revenue leadership roles

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Chief Commercial Officer brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

What a chief commercial officer does, and what sets the pay

A chief commercial officer (CCO) leads the whole commercial function at executive-committee level: the commercial strategy, pricing and revenue model, sales, often marketing and customer strategy, and the largest accounts and partnerships. The role usually reports to the chief executive. For the role in full, see what does a chief commercial officer do.

Three things set the salary. The size of the organisation and the revenue the role answers for. The industry: Robert Walters names technology, financial services and consumer markets as sectors where CCOs are expected to lead go-to-market strategy. And location: its 2026 London range starts at £208,000, above the top of its Midlands range. Coburg Banks puts London at £163,000, against £145,000 across the country.

Below the CCO sits the commercial director, whose role the Institute of Directors describes as planning, developing and putting in place commercial strategies to support business development and growth. In a smaller company the commercial director does the CCO’s job under a different title; in a group, several commercial directors report to one CCO. Pay the scope and the reporting line, not the title.

Watch the abbreviation. CCO also stands for chief compliance officer and chief customer officer, and salary tables that mix them are common. Every figure on this page is for the chief commercial officer.

02/ scope

How to hire a chief commercial officer

1. Scope the seat

Write down what the CCO owns: sales, pricing, marketing, partnerships, customer success, the commercial profit and loss. Say who reports in and whether the role carries a board seat. A CCO brief that leaves margin out draws a sales director shortlist; one that adds the whole revenue engine may be a chief revenue officer brief instead.

2. Choose the route

A permanent CCO suits a business that needs a senior commercial owner every day: hire a commercial director or CCO on that basis. If you need board-level commercial leadership for part of the week, hire a fractional CCO; our page on the fractional chief commercial officer explains how the part-week role works. Where the remit is sales, marketing and customer success under one lead, see chief revenue officer recruitment.

3. Set the base and the variable part together

The CIPD’s introduction to reward separates fixed base pay from variable pay, which is not guaranteed. At CCO level the variable part is often large, and in investor-backed businesses it may include equity. Tie the variable part to what the role controls, often margin or profit as well as revenue, and write the targets and payment dates into the offer.

4. Assess against the work

Ask for the targets they were set and what they delivered, and check it with references. A useful task is a real one: a review of your pricing, your largest accounts or your route to market, and a plan for the first two quarters.

What we do on a chief commercial officer brief

We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary commercial leaders, and non-executive directors. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first. Open roles are on the chief commercial officer jobs page.

Salary, bonus and on-costs: what the seat costs you

A salary is not the whole cost of an employee. For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds). Under automatic enrolment, the employer must pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, and those earnings include bonuses and commission (GOV.UK). Many schemes pay more.

The bonus is pay too. HMRC treats a cash bonus as earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base. PayScale’s self-reported profiles show bonuses of £6,000 to £51,000 for the role (PayScale).

A day rate does not compare one for one with a salary: a contractor funds their own pension, holidays and gaps between assignments. We have found no verified published day rate for an interim or fractional CCO, so we print none; we set out the day rate for each candidate on the shortlist. Tax status is set by how the engagement runs in practice. Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

06/ commercial director salary

Commercial director salary: the seat below the CCO

The commercial director salary starts lower. IT Jobs Watch records a £100,000 median advertised salary for commercial director roles in IT-sector job ads over the six months to 22 September 2026. Exec Capital’s 2026 guide puts mid-market commercial director base pay at £90,000–£170,000, with variable elements of 25–50% of base.

Both figures sit at or below the bottom of Robert Walters’ CCO range outside London. The overlap is real: a commercial director running a large division can out-earn a CCO in a small business. The step up to CCO usually brings an executive-committee seat, more than one commercial team reporting in, and more of the package in bonus and equity.

For the director’s pay in full, with interim day rates, see the commercial director salary page; for the role itself, see what does a commercial director do.

07/ chief revenue officer salary

Chief revenue officer salary: how the CRO compares

A chief revenue officer (CRO) owns sales, marketing and customer success as one revenue engine, usually in subscription or software businesses. A CCO’s remit tends to be wider on pricing, partnerships and the commercial model, and narrower on the customer success team. In many companies only one of the two seats exists.

Exec Capital’s 2026 guide puts the chief revenue officer salary at £120,000–£220,000 base at mid-market scale for revenue CROs, with variable pay tied to revenue on top. That sits inside Robert Walters’ CCO range. Exec Capital notes that CRO also stands for chief risk officer, a different role with different pay, so check which one a figure describes.

For CRO pay in full, see the chief revenue officer salary page; for the part-week role, see fractional CRO.

PayScale’s self-reported profiles give an average base of £122,340, from 37 profiles last updated in November 2025 (PayScale). Name the source when you quote one.

Scope the seat first: what it owns, who reports in and whether it sits on the board. Choose the route: permanent, fractional, part-time or interim. Set base and variable pay together, test candidates on a real commercial problem and check delivery with references. For part of the week, see how to hire a fractional CCO.
Start with base pay: Robert Walters gives £100,000 to £281,000 depending on size, industry and location. Add bonus and any equity, employer’s National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 a year, and pension. For fractional or interim work we set out the day rate for each candidate on the shortlist.

Exec Capital puts a revenue CRO’s base at £120,000–£220,000 at mid-market scale, inside Robert Walters’ £100,000–£281,000 CCO range. The remits differ more than the pay. See the chief revenue officer salary page.
