Transformation director salary · base by region and size, 2026
What a transformation director earns, by region, company size and title
A transformation director salary in 2026 has a median of £105,000 in UK job adverts, on IT Jobs Watch’s count for the six months to 5 October.
The middle half of the 17 salaries it quoted runs from £100,000 to £137,253.
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts the seat at £100,000–£166,000 in a large enterprise outside London, and Exec Capital publishes £130,000–£220,000 base for director-level transformation roles.
Company size and the title on the door move the number more than the word “transformation” does.
When you hire a transformation director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Transformation director brief and a shortlist of three to five.
01/ the role
What a transformation director does, and what sets the pay
A transformation director owns a change to how the business runs: a new operating model, a cost programme, a restructure, a systems replacement.
The work is closer to programme management than to running an operation.
The APM defines programme management as the coordinated management of projects and business-as-usual activities to achieve beneficial change.
In government the same accountability has a name: the senior responsible owner of a programme.
In a company, that ownership of the change is what the transformation director is hired for, and what the salary pays for.
Company size sets the pay first.
Robert Walters puts a transformation director in a medium enterprise (50 to 250 staff) at £80,000–£135,000 across the Midlands, North and South, and in a large enterprise (250+ staff) at £100,000–£166,000.
Its figures sit in the technology section of its survey, under senior appointments.
The title comes next.
In London, Robert Walters lists no transformation director row, but puts a head of transformation in commerce and industry at £160,000–£230,000 and a programme director at £110,000–£170,000.
Exec Capital publishes £130,000–£220,000 base for director-level transformation roles at SME and mid-market firms, and £180,000–£300,000+ for a chief transformation officer.
02/ scope
How to set the pay when you hire a transformation director
1. Name the change and its end state
Write down what will be different when the work is done, and by when.
A cost programme, a new operating model and a systems replacement need different records, and the package has to reach the person who has done yours before.
The government’s functional standard for project delivery, GovS 002 sets out what good direction of a portfolio, programme or project looks like.
2. Choose the route
A permanent appointment suits change that will run for years and needs an owner on the executive team.
A change with a fixed end often goes to an interim, paid by the day; see interim transformation director salary.
If the work fits into part of the week, see fractional transformation director jobs.
3. Set the base against size and region
Start from the band for your company size and region in the table below, not from a single national figure.
A large enterprise pays more than a medium one in every region Robert Walters surveys.
4. Plan the people side before the offer
Most transformations change jobs.
Acas sets out how to consult employees on changes at work, and when consultation is a legal requirement.
Ask candidates whether they have run one.
Where roles go, GOV.UK sets out the rules on redundancy consultations, including when collective consultation applies.
Where work moves to a new employer, Acas explains TUPE transfers.
What we do on a transformation brief
We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

04/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional transformation director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional transformation director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim transformation director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim transformation director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent transformation director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim transformation director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent transformation director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
05/ rates by stage
Transformation director salary by source, region and company size
Permanent pay as each publisher states it, all 2026. IT Jobs Watch counts salaries in UK IT job adverts over six months (a small sample for this title). Robert Walters’ ranges and averages come from roles advertised over 12 months; its transformation director rows are in its technology section, and its London rows are for other titles, labelled. Exec Capital publishes its own planning bands. Robert Walters and Exec Capital are recruiters.
06/ economics
What the salary costs the business, beyond the base
A salary is not the whole cost of an employee.
For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds).
On a £105,000 salary that is £15,000 a year (our arithmetic).
Under automatic enrolment, the employer must also pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, and those earnings include bonuses (GOV.UK).
A bonus tied to the programme is pay too.
HMRC treats a cash bonus as earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base.

08/ transformation director salary uk
Transformation director salary UK: what the national figures measure
The figures measure different things.
IT Jobs Watch’s transformation director salary UK median, £105,000, is the middle of the salaries quoted in IT job adverts over six months, and only 17 adverts quoted one.
For the same six months of 2025 its median was £120,000.
A sample that small moves a long way from one year to the next.
Robert Walters’ survey covers roles advertised over 12 months, split by company size and region, and sits in its technology section.
Exec Capital’s £130,000–£220,000 is a search firm’s own planning band for director-level transformation roles, with no sample stated.
Read each as one view of the market and start from the band that matches your business.
09/ transformation director salary london
Transformation director salary London, and the regions
The transformation director salary London adverts quote is not the highest in the country.
IT Jobs Watch puts the London median at £102,500 across 23 adverts, and the median outside London at £118,627 across 11.
Both samples are small.
Robert Walters publishes no transformation director row for London.
Its nearest London titles in commerce and industry are a head of transformation, at £160,000–£200,000 in a medium enterprise and £160,000–£230,000 in a large one, and a programme director, at £110,000–£160,000 and £125,000–£170,000.
Outside London, Robert Walters gives the transformation director a large-enterprise range of £110,000–£166,000 in the Midlands, £100,000–£140,000 in the North and £100,000–£150,000 in the South.
10/ average transformation director salary
Average transformation director salary by company size
Robert Walters’ average transformation director salary, the mean of the roles it found advertised, is £105,100 in a medium enterprise in the Midlands, £106,000 in the North and £112,305 in the South.
In a large enterprise, Robert Walters’ average rises to £133,985 in the Midlands, £125,000 in the North and £127,755 in the South.

A permanent salary buys an owner for the change, with notice on both sides.
An interim is paid by the day for full-time work over a fixed period; see interim transformation director salary for the day rates.
A part-week arrangement is also possible; see fractional transformation director jobs.
For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional transformation director salary.
The three are paid on different bases, so compare the total cost for the time you need.
