Fractional chief sustainability officer salary · day rate, month, year

What a fractional chief sustainability officer earns, by the day, the month and the year

A fractional chief sustainability officer is paid a day rate, not a salary.

On Exec Capital’s 2026 figures, a fractional chief sustainability officer salary is built on a day rate of £1,200–£1,800 at a mid-market business, £1,500–£2,200 at a FTSE 250 or large private company and £2,000–£3,000 at a FTSE 100 company or regulated financial services firm.

Exec Capital says fractional engagements run two to four days a month, and gives an example of three days a month at £1,500 a day costing £54,000 a year.

When you brief us on a fractional hire, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional sustainability roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Fractional Chief Sustainability Officer brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How a fractional sustainability chief is paid, and what sets the rate

A fractional chief sustainability officer is a senior sustainability leader who works a few days a month for several organisations at once.

Exec Capital describes the engagement as two to four days a month: attending board meetings, owning the sustainability strategy, leading climate disclosure, chairing the sustainability committee and answering investors and customers on ESG.

The client pays for the days.

There is no salary, bonus or employer pension.

The client sets the rate.

Exec Capital’s bands rise with turnover and regulation: £1,200–£1,800 a day at a business turning over £50m to £250m, £1,500–£2,200 at £250m to £1bn, and £2,000–£3,000 at a FTSE 100 company or a regulated financial services firm.

It publishes the same bands for interim engagements; the difference is the days bought.

The work is set by the reporting cycle.

Quoted companies report energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in their annual directors’ report under the government’s environmental reporting guidelines, and the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards are published for voluntary use.

For the standards paragraph by paragraph, our sister site uksrs.org.uk sets out UK SRS S1 and S2.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional chief sustainability officer

1. Count the days the work needs

List what the role must own: the board’s sustainability agenda, the annual disclosure, a target submission, the committee.

Then estimate the days a month it takes.

The days set the cost; the firm and the regulation set the rate.

2. Match the record to the reporting

A first sustainability lead for a mid-market business needs someone who has built a disclosure from nothing.

A listed or regulated firm needs someone who has signed one off under scrutiny.

Pay for the experience the next year needs.

Most corporate carbon inventories follow the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, which sets how emissions are counted and reported.

For listed companies and regulated firms, the FCA sets out its approach on its climate change and sustainable finance pages, including its anti-greenwashing rule.

3. Agree scope, access and rhythm

Write down which days, which meetings and which data the executive will have.

A few days a month works when both sides know what they buy.

If the business makes environmental claims to customers, the CMA’s Green Claims Code sets out how to stay within consumer law.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent sustainability leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

For part-time seats on the board, see fractional sustainability jobs.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

08/ economics

Rate is not income: what the executive keeps

The day rate is what the client pays, not what the executive takes home.

A fractional executive who invoices through their own limited company can take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit, after Corporation Tax.

Out of the same income they fund their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell.

Tax status changes the number too.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the executive’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so someone with three clients can have three different answers.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

10/ the year

What a fractional sustainability chief makes in a year

Multiply the rate by the days sold, across every client.

Exec Capital puts one engagement at about £40,000 to £80,000 a year, and its example of three days a month at £1,500 a day comes to £54,000.

Two such clients is twice that, if the diary holds.

In practice the diary rarely fills every month.

Holidays, the gaps between clients and the time spent finding the next one all come off the total.

A fractional salary is the profit of a small business, not a rate multiplied by a full year.

To model your own position, start from the days you can realistically sell and use the rate calculator.

11/ the comparison

Full-time salary vs fractional pay: comparing like with like

A permanent sustainability chief is paid a salary and package, with employer’s National Insurance, pension and often a large bonus on top; see chief sustainability officer salary for those benchmarks.

Exec Capital sets its £54,000 fractional example against permanent compensation of £200,000 or more.

An interim is paid the same kind of day rate for full-time cover over a fixed period; see interim chief sustainability officer salary.

Compare the total cost for the days the organisation needs, not the headline figures.

12/ questions

Fractional chief sustainability officer salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional chief sustainability officer.

A fractional chief sustainability officer has no salary from the client: they are paid by the day. Exec Capital puts one engagement at about £40,000 to £80,000 a year, and gives an example of three days a month at £1,500 a day costing £54,000. Annual income depends on how many days they sell across clients.
Exec Capital’s 2026 bands are £1,200–£1,800 a day at a mid-market business, £1,500–£2,200 at a FTSE 250 or large private company and £2,000–£3,000 at a FTSE 100 company or regulated financial services firm.
Exec Capital says two to four days a month, often spread across several businesses. At its mid-market band, two days cost £2,400–£3,600 a month and four days £4,800–£7,200 (our arithmetic).
Count the days the work needs, match the candidate’s record to your reporting, and agree scope, access and rhythm before the rate. For part-time seats on the board, see fractional sustainability jobs.
The day rate times the days. At Exec Capital’s mid-market band, three days a month cost £3,600–£5,400, or £43,200–£64,800 a year (our arithmetic). We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
For a few days a month, yes. Exec Capital sets its example of three days a month at £1,500 a day, £54,000 a year, against permanent compensation of £200,000 or more. See chief sustainability officer salary.
It decides how the fees are taxed. A medium or large client makes the status determination for each engagement; for a small private-sector client, the executive’s own company decides (HMRC). Status depends on how each engagement runs in practice, so it is set per contract, not per person.
