Interim chief sustainability officer salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim chief sustainability officer earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim chief sustainability officer is paid a day rate, not a salary.

On Exec Capital’s 2026 figures, the interim chief sustainability officer salary runs from £1,200 to £1,800 a day at a mid-market business, £1,500 to £2,200 at a FTSE 250 or large private company, and £2,000 to £3,000 at a FTSE 100 company or a regulated financial services firm.

The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.

When you brief us on an interim, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim sustainability roles on the board

Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a Interim Chief Sustainability Officer brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.

01/ the role

How an interim is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim chief sustainability officer holds the sustainability seat full-time for a defined period: a departure, a disclosure cycle, a target submission or the build of a new function.

Exec Capital says that where the work has a clear endpoint, such as a TCFD disclosure cycle or a science-based target submission, a six-to-twelve month interim engagement may fit better than a permanent role.

That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.

There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim chief sustainability officer

1. Define the mandate and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when.

For a quoted company that may be the energy and carbon disclosure in the next annual report, under the government’s environmental reporting guidelines.

For others it may be readiness for the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards, which are published and voluntary for now.

The UK standards are based on the global baseline set by the International Sustainability Standards Board.

Science-based targets follow the standards of the Science Based Targets initiative.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the record to the mandate

Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: the disclosure that was published, the target that was validated, the team that was in place on exit.

Roles on the board are on interim chief sustainability officer jobs.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent sustainability leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

A fractional chief sustainability officer holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

08/ interim chief sustainability officer day rate

Interim chief sustainability officer day rate by firm

The interim chief sustainability officer day rate rises with the size and regulation of the firm.

Exec Capital puts a mid-market interim, at a business turning over £50m to £250m, at £1,200–£1,800 a day.

A FTSE 250 or large private company, turning over £250m to £1bn, pays £1,500–£2,200, and a FTSE 100 company or regulated financial services firm £2,000–£3,000.

Exec Capital publishes the same three bands for fractional engagements, where the executive works a few days a month.

The difference between the two is the days bought, not the rate.

For scale, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average day rate across every interim function at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.

An interim sustainability chief at a mid-market firm sits above both, on Exec Capital’s figures.

09/ annualised

What the day rate comes to over a year

No interim is paid a salary, but the comparison is useful.

At Exec Capital’s mid-market band of £1,200–£1,800 a day, 220 days would bill £264,000–£396,000.

At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same band bills £177,600–£266,400.

Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days, comes to £26,400–£39,600 at the mid-market band (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost.

The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.

For scale, Exec Capital puts the permanent base salary for a board-level chief sustainability officer at £150,000–£400,000 or more, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

See chief sustainability officer salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.

10/ the other routes

Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a full-time sustainability chief for a fixed period.

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see chief sustainability officer salary.

If the work fits into a few days a month, a fractional engagement on the same day rate costs less over the same months; see fractional chief sustainability officer salary.

11/ questions

Interim chief sustainability officer salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim chief sustainability officer.

An interim chief sustainability officer is paid a day rate rather than a salary. Exec Capital puts it at £1,200–£1,800 a day at a mid-market business. At that band, 220 days would bill £264,000–£396,000 and the IIM’s average of 148 days billed would bill £177,600–£266,400 (our arithmetic). That is gross income to the interim’s company, before its costs, pension and tax.
Exec Capital’s 2026 bands are £1,200–£1,800 a day at a mid-market business, £1,500–£2,200 at a FTSE 250 or large private company and £2,000–£3,000 at a FTSE 100 company or regulated financial services firm.
Across every interim function, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector. The survey does not report sustainability on its own.
Define the mandate and its end date, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and check the candidate’s record on comparable assignments. See hire an interim chief sustainability officer.
The day rate times the days. At Exec Capital’s mid-market band, a month of about 22 working days is £26,400–£39,600 (our arithmetic). There is no employer’s National Insurance or pension on top when the interim works outside IR35 through their own company. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Exec Capital says six to twelve months fits work with a clear endpoint, such as a disclosure cycle or a target submission. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10 months.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
