Fractional transformation director salary · pro-rata arithmetic, 2026

What a fractional transformation director earns, pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes a fractional transformation director day rate.

The figures here are the permanent transformation director salary from IT Jobs Watch spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

On its £105,000 median, a fractional transformation director salary comes to about £480 a day.

One day a week for 46 weeks is about £21,950 a year on the same basis (our arithmetic).

The rate you pay is the one a candidate quotes.

When you hire a fractional transformation director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Operations and change roles on the board

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a transformation director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How a fractional transformation director is paid, and why this page shows arithmetic

A fractional transformation director leads a change programme for part of the week, often one to three days, while working for other clients too.

The work is closer to programme management than to running an operation.

The APM defines programme management as the coordinated management of projects and business-as-usual activities to achieve beneficial change.

In government the same accountability has a name: the senior responsible owner of a programme.

Ask a candidate which programmes they have owned in that sense, and what changed when they finished.

A fractional transformation director is paid by the day or on a monthly retainer, not a salary.

We looked for an independent published day rate for the seat and found none.

What is published is either a provider’s own price list or a figure for another seat or another country, and none of those is a market rate for this one.

So this page starts from what is published: the permanent salary.

IT Jobs Watch puts the median at £105,000 in UK job adverts over the six months to 5 October 2026, with the middle half of the 17 salaries it quoted between £100,000 and £137,253.

Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts the seat at £100,000–£166,000 in a large enterprise outside London.

Every day and year figure on this page is that salary divided out — our arithmetic.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional transformation director

1. Name the change and count the days

Write down what will be different when the programme is done, and by when.

Then estimate the days a week it needs.

The government’s functional standard for project delivery, GovS 002 sets out what good direction of a programme looks like, and is a useful checklist for the scope.

2. Ask for quotes on the same basis

Ask every candidate for the day rate, the days a week, the minimum term and the notice on each side.

Two quotes that differ on any of those are not comparable.

Set them against the pro-rata figures in the table below, which are a floor for comparison, not a price.

3. Settle tax status and VAT before you sign

If your business is medium or large, you decide whether the engagement falls inside IR35.

Ask whether the candidate’s company is VAT-registered, because VAT then sits on top of the day rate.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

What a buyer should check, beyond the day rate

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the contractor’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement, and our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

A contractor who is registered for VAT adds it to every invoice.

Whether that is a real cost depends on whether your business can reclaim it, so ask before you compare quotes.

A day rate carries no benefits.

A self-employed contractor gets no holiday or sick pay from the client, and the client pays no employer pension contribution.

An employee is entitled to paid holiday and, under automatic enrolment, to an employer pension contribution.

That is why a pro-rata salary and a quoted day rate are not the same thing.

09/ the method

How we worked out the day and year figures

We start from a published permanent salary.

We divide it by 220 working days, the convention this site uses for a full-time year, to give a day equivalent.

We then multiply by the days a week a fractional engagement might buy, over 46 weeks.

A day a week for 46 weeks is 46 days.

Every result is worked from the full salary and rounded to the nearest £10.

On IT Jobs Watch’s £105,000 median, that gives about £480 a day and about £21,950 a year for a day a week.

All of it is our arithmetic.

The arithmetic is a floor for comparison, not a market rate.

It leaves out everything an employer pays on top of a salary, and everything a contractor pays for themselves.

Use it to read a quote, not to set one.

10/ the other routes

Permanent, interim or fractional: which pay basis fits

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see transformation director salary for the benchmarks by region and company size.

An interim holds the seat full-time for a fixed period and is paid by the day; see interim transformation director salary.

A fractional engagement buys only the days the programme needs.

Compare the total cost for the time you need, not the headline numbers.

For the director who runs the operation rather than changes it, see operations director salary.

For full-time interim cover across the executive team, see interim executive recruitment.

Fractional transformation director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional transformation director.

A fractional transformation director is paid a day rate or retainer, not a salary. No independent UK source publishes that rate. On IT Jobs Watch’s £105,000 permanent median, the pro-rata day equivalent is about £480, and a day a week for 46 weeks is about £21,950 a year (our arithmetic, not a market rate).
We divide the published permanent salary by 220 working days, then multiply by 1, 2 and 3 days a week over 46 weeks. Each figure is rounded to the nearest £10. It is our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.
The day rate is whatever the candidate quotes. We found no independent published figure for it. For comparison, the permanent salary divided by 220 working days gives £450–£620 across the middle half of IT Jobs Watch’s advertised salaries (our arithmetic).
The day rate times the days. On the pro-rata arithmetic, a day a week for 46 weeks is about £21,950 a year at the £105,000 median, and two days about £43,910 (our arithmetic, not a market rate). We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, so you compare real quotes.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the contractor’s own company (HMRC). It is decided contract by contract, not person by person.
No. A contractor gets no holiday or sick pay from the client, and the client pays no employer pension contribution. An employee is entitled to both under the rules on holiday and workplace pensions.
If their company is registered for VAT, yes: VAT is added to the day rate on each invoice. Ask before you compare quotes.
They are paid on different bases. The permanent seat is paid a salary and package; see transformation director salary. Full-time interim cover is paid by the day; see interim transformation director salary.
