Interim transformation director salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim transformation director earns, by the day and by the mandate
An interim transformation director is paid a day rate, not a salary.
The median contract day rate for a transformation director is £900, on IT Jobs Watch’s count of UK job adverts in the six months to 5 October 2026 (12 rates quoted).
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts the PAYE contract rate at £800–£1,200 a day in the Midlands, North and South, and Exec Capital publishes £1,200–£2,500 a day for an interim digital transformation director.
Change is the most common interim brief: in the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey, change or transformation management was the primary nature of 37% of interims’ last assignments.
When you hire an interim transformation director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
How an interim transformation director is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim transformation director runs a change full-time for a defined period: a cost programme, a new operating model, a restructure, an integration after a deal.
In government programmes the same accountability belongs to the senior responsible owner, and the government’s project delivery functional standard sets out how portfolios, programmes and projects are directed.
The interim invoices the business for the days worked.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim transformation director
1. Define the change and its end date
Say what must be different when the interim leaves, and by when: the new structure in place, the savings booked, the system live, the handover done.
A defined end is what makes the work interim rather than permanent.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Match the record to the change
Ask for outcomes from comparable programmes: what was promised, what was delivered and what it cost.
A restructure needs someone who has run a redundancy consultation, and knows the Acas guidance on redundancy; a systems change needs someone who has taken one live.
Qualifications from the Association for Project Management and the CMI’s Chartered Manager status are two signals of formal standing, alongside the record.
What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
For interim leaders across the executive team, see interim executive recruitment.

04/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional transformation director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional transformation director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim transformation director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim transformation director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent transformation director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim transformation director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent transformation director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
05/ rates by stage
Interim transformation director salary day rates by source, region and title
Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. IT Jobs Watch counts contract rates in UK IT job adverts over six months (a small sample). Robert Walters’ rates are PAYE contract rates from roles advertised over 12 months; its London rows are for other titles, labelled. Henderson Scott’s is an outside-IR35 contractor rate shared by several leadership titles. Exec Capital’s band is for a digital transformation director. Robert Walters, Henderson Scott and Exec Capital are recruiters. The IIM figures cover every interim function.
06/ economics
Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
Robert Walters’ transformation rates are PAYE rates, paid through payroll; Henderson Scott’s are outside IR35.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement, and our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ interim transformation director day rate
Interim transformation director day rate by region and title
The interim transformation director day rate depends on where the work is and what the role is called.
IT Jobs Watch puts the median contract rate at £900 in London and £750 outside it.
Robert Walters’ PAYE rate for a transformation director is £800–£1,200 a day in each of the Midlands, North and South.
In London, Robert Walters lists other titles for the same kind of work.
A head of transformation is paid £1,100–£1,700 a day, a programme director £900–£1,500, and a business change or transformation lead in its finance executive and interim table £1,200–£2,000.
Exec Capital publishes £1,200–£2,500 a day for an interim digital transformation director at SME and mid-market firms, with FCA-regulated firms at the upper end.
Henderson Scott’s outside-IR35 contractor rate for a transformation director is £900–£1,050, the same band it gives a CTO.
09/ the year
What the day rate comes to, over a month and a year
No interim is paid a salary, but the day rate can be compared with one.
At IT Jobs Watch’s £900 median, a month of about 22 working days comes to £19,800, and 220 days would bill £198,000.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £133,200.
All three are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
At Robert Walters’ £1,500 average for London business change or transformation in its executive and interim table, 148 days would bill £222,000 (our arithmetic).
That is the client’s cost.
The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, Robert Walters’ average permanent salary for a transformation director in a large enterprise is £125,000–£133,985 outside London, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.
See transformation director salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.
10/ the market
Why so much change work goes to interims
Transformation is the interim market’s largest brief.
In the IIM’s 2026 survey, change or transformation management was the primary nature of 37% of interims’ last assignments, the top spot for another year, and business change or transformation was the top functional discipline.
Turnaround or restructuring rose to 13%.
The same survey asked for the first time how many last assignments were fractional: nearly 25% were.
A change that needs a senior owner for part of the week can be run that way; see fractional transformation director jobs.
For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional transformation director salary.
