Interim chief digital officer salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim chief digital officer earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim chief digital officer is paid a day rate, not a salary.

Robert Walters’ 2026 salary survey puts the London contract rate for a chief digital officer at £830 to £1,350 a day through PAYE, with an average of £1,093.

Harvey Nash’s 2026 report, as reported by HotMinute, gives a wider contractor band of £900 to £2,000 a day.

Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average day rate at £907.

What an interim chief digital officer salary comes to over a year depends on the days billed, not the rate alone.

When you hire an interim chief digital officer through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Digital leadership roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Interim Chief Digital Officer brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How an interim digital leader is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim holds the digital seat full-time for a defined period: a departure, a transformation programme, a platform change or the run-up to a permanent hire.

The government’s Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework describes the nearest public-sector seat, the chief digital and information officer, as shaping “the delivery of the organisation’s strategy through digital, data and technology”.

The IIM’s 2026 survey finds change or transformation management is still the most common kind of interim assignment.

The interim invoices the business for the days worked, so the day rate is the real unit of pay.

There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

How to bring in an interim digital leader

1. Define the mandate and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a digital strategy the board signs off, a replatforming that goes live, a team rebuilt, a handover to a permanent hire.

A defined end date is what makes interim cover cheaper than an open-ended gap.

A new platform should meet the NCSC’s Cyber Essentials controls as a minimum.

Where it handles customer data, the ICO expects data protection by design and by default.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the record to the mandate

Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: the programme delivered, the channel launched, the cost taken out.

A transformation needs someone who has led one at your scale.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent digital and technology leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

If the work fits into part of the week, see fractional chief digital officer jobs.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

07/ interim chief digital officer day rate

Interim chief digital officer day rate against the other technology seats

The interim chief digital officer day rate has one direct published figure.

Robert Walters’ 2026 salary survey puts the London contract rate for a chief digital officer at £830–£1,350 a day, paid through PAYE, with an average of £1,093 across the roles it analysed.

Harvey Nash’s 2026 contractor rates, as reported by HotMinute, are wider: £900–£2,000 a day for a chief digital officer, with an average of £1,200.

Harvey Nash gives the same £1,200 average for a chief technology officer, £1,400 for a chief information officer and £1,500 for a chief data officer.

Both chief digital officer averages sit above the IIM’s 2026 average of £907 a day across every interim function, and above its private-sector average of £1,004.

A board-level digital seat is priced as a board-level seat.

08/ the year

What the day rate comes to over a year

No interim is paid a salary, but the day rate can be compared with one.

At Robert Walters’ London average of £1,093 a day, 220 days would bill £240,460.

At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £161,764, and Robert Walters’ £830–£1,350 range bills £122,840 to £199,800.

All are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and £1,093 a day, comes to £24,046 (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost.

If the interim’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to the invoice.

The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.

For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent chief digital officer is £125,000 in base salary, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

Interim, permanent or part-week: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a full-time digital leader for a fixed period.

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see chief digital officer salary.

If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional engagement for only the days you need may cost less over the same months; no source we can cite publishes a fractional rate for the seat, so price it from the day rate and the days.

For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic), see fractional chief digital officer salary.

Interim chief digital officer salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim chief digital officer.

Robert Walters’ 2026 salary survey puts the average London contract rate for a chief digital officer at £1,093 a day, within a range of £830 to £1,350, paid through PAYE. Harvey Nash’s 2026 report, as reported by HotMinute, gives an average contractor day rate of £1,200, within £900 to £2,000. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average at £907.
An interim chief digital officer is paid a day rate rather than a salary. At Robert Walters’ London average of £1,093 a day, 220 days would bill £240,460 and the IIM’s average of 148 days billed would bill £161,764 (our arithmetic). That is gross income to the interim’s company, before its costs, pension and tax.
Close, but not the same thing. Robert Walters and Harvey Nash publish contract day rates; Robert Walters’ is a London rate paid through PAYE. An interim at board level is usually engaged on a day rate for full-time cover over a fixed term. Use the contract rates as the nearest published guide, and expect the mandate to move them.
Define the mandate and its end date, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and check the candidate’s record on comparable assignments. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
The day rate times the days. At Robert Walters’ London average of £1,093 a day, a month of about 22 working days is £24,046 (our arithmetic). There is no employer’s National Insurance or pension on top when the interim works outside IR35 through their own company. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, with an average gap of 3.2 months between assignments.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
