Chief digital officer salary · base pay by city, 2026
What a chief digital officer earns, by city and by experience
A chief digital officer salary in 2026 runs from £103,000 to £147,000, with a median of £125,000, on Robert Half’s national figures for a permanent chief digital officer.
In London, Robert Half puts the median at £170,000.
Harvey Nash’s 2026 report, as reported by HotMinute, gives a wider band of £140,000 to £225,000.
Base is only part of the cost: bonus, pension, employer’s National Insurance and often equity sit on top.
When you hire a chief digital officer through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Chief Digital Officer brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
What the seat covers, and what sets the pay
A chief digital officer owns how the business uses digital channels, data and technology to serve customers and run its operations.
The government’s Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework describes the nearest public-sector seat, the chief digital and information officer, as the person who “shapes and enables the delivery of the organisation’s strategy through digital, data and technology”.
In a private company the remit varies, so write it down before you set the pay.
Experience sets the pay first.
Robert Half ties its national range to it: £103,000 for a candidate with little prior experience in the seat, £125,000 for an average level of experience, and £147,000 for above-average experience, often with specialised qualifications.
Place comes next.
Robert Half’s London range is £140,000–£200,000, with a median of £170,000.
It also publishes six other cities, from a £128,750 median in Glasgow to £150,000 in Birmingham and Bristol.
In all six, its city median sits above its own national median, so read each figure as published.
There is no single qualification for the seat.
For technology leaders, BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, runs the Chartered IT Professional (CITP) register, which it says “validates technical expertise and professional behaviours in the tech industry”.
02/ scope
How to set the pay for a digital leader
1. Scope the seat before the salary
Write down what the role owns: digital channels and customer experience only, or the technology estate and data as well.
A seat that also runs IT overlaps the CIO’s; compare CIO salary before you set the band.
2. Choose the route
A permanent appointment suits a business that needs a digital leader every day.
If the seat is empty and needs full-time cover now, see interim chief digital officer salary for what that costs by the day.
If the work fits into part of the week, see fractional chief digital officer jobs.
For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional chief digital officer salary.
3. Set base, bonus and equity together
Agree the bonus and any equity in the same offer as the base.
In a growth business, HMRC’s Enterprise Management Incentives are the tax-advantaged share option scheme most smaller companies look at first.
What we do on a digital-leadership brief
We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary digital and technology leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
To bring one in for part of the week, hire a fractional chief digital officer.

04/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional chief digital officer. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional chief digital officer holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim chief digital officer. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim chief digital officer takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent chief digital officer after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim chief digital officer holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent chief digital officer.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
05/ rates by stage
Chief digital officer salary by source, city and title
Permanent pay as each publisher states it. Robert Half publishes starting salary projections (base) from its placements, checked against third-party vacancy data. Robert Walters publishes ranges and the mean of the roles it analysed, by company size, for London only. Harvey Nash’s band is from its 2026 Tech Talent & Salary Report, as reported by HotMinute. IT Jobs Watch counts salaries quoted in permanent IT job ads over six months. The ONS figure covers every employee in its information technology directors group, a broader group than this seat. Robert Half, Robert Walters and Harvey Nash are recruiters.
06/ economics
What the salary costs the business, beyond the base
A salary is not the whole cost of an employee.
For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds).
On Robert Half’s £125,000 median that is £18,000 a year (15% of £120,000, our arithmetic).
Under automatic enrolment, the employer must pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, which in most schemes run from £6,240 to £50,270 a year (GOV.UK).
On a salary above that band, the legal minimum is about £1,321 a year (our arithmetic).
Many schemes pay more.
The bonus is pay too.
HMRC treats a cash bonus as earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base.

08/ chief digital officer salary uk
Chief digital officer salary UK: the national benchmarks side by side
The national figures measure different things.
Robert Half’s chief digital officer salary UK range, £103,000–£147,000 with a median of £125,000, is a starting-salary projection built from its own placements and checked against 350,000 third-party vacancies from Textkernel.
The average chief digital officer salary in Harvey Nash’s 2026 report, as reported by HotMinute, is £175,000, within a band of £140,000 to £225,000.
For an official view, the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings puts the median full-time pay of information technology directors at £91,671 in 2025, with the range running from £69,515 to £119,408 across the middle half.
The ONS occupation coding index places the digital director and the chief information officer in that group and has no separate entry for the chief digital officer, so treat it as the wider field the seat sits in, not as a benchmark for it.
09/ chief digital officer salary london
Chief digital officer salary London, and six other cities
The chief digital officer salary London employers pay sits at the top of Robert Half’s figures: £140,000–£200,000, with a median of £170,000.
Its London figure for a head of digital is a median of £116,250, which shows the step between the two seats.
Robert Walters’ 2026 salary survey splits London by company size: £125,000–£187,000 in a medium enterprise of 50 to 250 staff, with an average of £161,200, and £104,000–£208,000 in a large enterprise of 250 or more, with an average of £160,200.
Its averages are the mean of the advertised roles it analysed.
Outside London, Robert Half publishes Birmingham and Bristol at £123,500–£176,500 (median £150,000), Manchester at £122,500–£175,000 (median £148,750), Edinburgh at £119,500–£170,500 (median £145,000), Leeds at £117,500–£167,500 (median £142,500) and Glasgow at £106,000–£151,500 (median £128,750).
10/ digital director salary
Digital director salary: the titles one step down
Many businesses give the top digital seat a director title rather than a chief officer one.
IT Jobs Watch puts the median digital director salary at £100,000 a year, from 32 salaries quoted in 58 permanent IT job ads in the six months to 5 October 2026.
The sample is small, so read it as a guide.
One step further down, Robert Half puts a head of digital at £79,000–£106,250 nationally, with a median of £85,500, and at a £116,250 median in London.

A permanent salary buys a digital leader every day, with notice on both sides.
An interim is paid by the day for full-time cover over a fixed period; see interim chief digital officer salary for the day rates.
No source we can cite publishes a fractional rate for the seat, so for part-week work, brief the days you need and compare the total cost, not the headline numbers.
Fractional chief digital officer salary spreads this permanent salary across part-week days, our arithmetic and not a market rate.
Part-week roles are listed on fractional chief digital officer jobs.
