IT director salary · national, London and day rates
What an IT director earns, nationally, in London and by the day
An IT director earns a median advertised salary of £92,500 in IT Jobs Watch’s count of permanent IT job ads over the six months to 9 September 2026. Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts the role at £81,750–£116,500 nationally (25th to 75th percentile), with £96,000 at the 50th, and £111,250–£158,500 in London.
The IT director salary depends on the size of the estate and the team, the sector, the location and whether the role is the top technology seat or reports to a CIO. When you hire an IT director through us, permanent, fractional or interim, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
What an IT director does, and what sets the pay
The ONS occupational classification (SOC 2020) describes information technology directors as the people who plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the work and resources needed to provide and operate IT infrastructure and services: networks, devices, servers and the software on them. It puts the IT director and the chief information officer in the same unit group. For the role in full, see what an IT director does.
Pay follows the seat. Robert Half’s 2026 national figures show the ladder: head of IT £72,000–£89,750 (£81,500 at the 50th percentile), IT director £81,750–£116,500 (£96,000), and chief information officer £108,000–£200,000 (£150,250). An IT director who is the most senior technology leader in the business, with a large estate or a regulated sector, sits towards the top of the IT director band. For the seat above, see CIO salary.
IT Jobs Watch counts the salaries quoted in job ads, so its figures are advertised base pay, before bonus or negotiation. Its median outside London is £75,000, against £92,500 for the whole country and £100,000 across its London ads.
02/ scope
How to hire an IT director
1. Scope the seat
Write down what the role owns: infrastructure, business systems, the service desk, suppliers, security, data, projects, or some mix. Say how large the team and budget are, and whether the role reports to the chief executive, the finance director or a CIO.
2. Choose the route
A permanent IT director suits an organisation whose estate needs an owner every day; see the open IT director jobs. If you need senior IT judgement for part of the week, you can hire a fractional IT director. For full-time executive cover with an end date, see interim CIO. For a permanent executive search at the level above, see how to hire a CIO.
3. Set the base and the variable part together
The CIPD’s introduction to reward separates guaranteed base pay from variable pay, which is not guaranteed. For an IT director, tie any bonus to what the role controls, such as service availability, project delivery, security milestones or cost, and write the measures into the offer.
What we do on an IT director brief
We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary IT leaders, and non-executive directors. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
03/ rates by stage
IT director salary national, London and contract rates
Advertised salaries and contract rates from IT Jobs Watch (IT job ads, base pay only) and Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide (projected starting salaries, a recruiter’s figures). Each figure is quoted as its source publishes it.
04/ economics
Salary or day rate: what the seat costs you
A salary is not the whole cost of an employee. For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds). Under automatic enrolment, the employer must pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, and those earnings include bonuses (GOV.UK). Many schemes pay more.
A bonus is pay too. HMRC treats a cash bonus as earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base.
A day rate does not compare one for one with a salary: a contractor funds their own pension, holidays and gaps between assignments. Tax status is set by how the engagement runs in practice. Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

06/ IT director salary London
IT director salary in London: what the capital pays
Robert Half’s 2026 guide puts the IT director salary in London at £111,250 at the 25th percentile, £130,500 at the 50th and £158,500 at the 75th. Its national figures for the same title are £81,750, £96,000 and £116,500.
IT Jobs Watch’s job-ad counts point the same way: a £100,000 median across 45 London ads, against £75,000 for the UK excluding London, over the six months to 9 September 2026 (IT Jobs Watch).
In London, budget for the package as well as the base, and say in the brief whether the role is office-based or hybrid. For the open roles, see IT director jobs.
07/ interim IT director day rate
Interim IT director day rate: what contract cover is advertised at
For an interim IT director day rate, the nearest published figure is IT Jobs Watch’s count of contract job ads: a median of £750 a day over the six months to 25 September 2026, with £706 at the 25th percentile and £913 at the 75th (IT Jobs Watch, contracts). Those figures rest on only three quoted daily rates, so treat them as a thin signal, not a market band.
No source we have found publishes a fractional IT director day rate, so we do not quote one. On every shortlist we set out each candidate’s day rate, so you compare real numbers rather than a band.
Interim cover suits a vacancy, a migration or the months after a security incident. For executive-level interim cover, see interim CIO; for part of the week, fractional IT director jobs.
