Interim CIO salary · day rates · 2026

What an interim CIO earns, by the day and by the mandate

An interim CIO salary is a day rate, not a salary.

Exec Capital publishes £800–£2,000 a day for an interim CIO in 2026, from £700–£1,200 at an SME to £1,500–£2,500+ on a major transformation or at a large corporate.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907.

There is no pension, holiday pay or bonus on top, and tax treatment depends on IR35.

When you hire an interim CIO through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

On the board interim CIO and technology leadership roles

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Interim CIO brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

Interim chief information officer salary: why it is a day rate

An interim chief information officer works full-time, or close to it, for a fixed term: a programme rescue, an ERP or cloud migration, a cyber incident, a post-acquisition integration, or the gap before a permanent CIO starts.

Exec Capital puts the usual assignment at three to nine months.

The interim chief information officer salary is therefore quoted by the day, because the engagement ends.

The day rate is the market’s standard unit.

In the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey, 78% of interim assignments were paid on a day rate.

The same survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, with an average gap of 3.2 months between assignments.

That gap is part of why a day rate looks high next to a salary.

Job-ad data does not help here yet.

IT Jobs Watch could not publish a median CIO contract day rate for the six months to 5 October 2026, because no daily rates were quoted.

The figures on this page are Exec Capital’s published bands, a recruiter’s planning ranges, and the IIM’s survey of interim managers across all functions.

For what the role covers week to week, and how it differs from a fractional CIO, see interim CIO.

02/ scope

How to price and make the hire

1. Define the mandate and its end

Write down what the interim must deliver, by when, and what done looks like: a go-live, a remediation plan signed off, a permanent CIO in post.

The mandate sets the band more than the title does.

2. Match the band to the mandate

Exec Capital’s bands rise with complexity: an SME or scale-up sits lowest, a regulated business or a major transformation highest.

Budget for the full term at the agreed rate, not a monthly average.

3. Settle IR35 before the start date

A medium or large client must decide whether the engagement is inside or outside the off-payroll rules and give the interim a status determination.

HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax tool can help.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

What we do on an interim CIO brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

05/ economics

Day rate or salary: how the two compare

Multiplying a day rate by 220 working days gives a ceiling, not an income.

At Exec Capital’s £800–£2,000 a day, that is £176,000 to £440,000, our arithmetic.

Interim managers rarely bill a full year: the IIM’s 2026 survey records an average of 148 days billed.

Read the annual figure as the most an interim could bill, not what they earn.

The rate also carries costs an employer would otherwise pay.

An interim funds their own pension, holidays, training, insurance and the gaps between assignments.

A permanent CIO costs the employer National Insurance and pension on top of salary; Robert Half’s 2026 national median CIO salary is £150,250.

For the permanent side in full, see CIO salary.

Tax treatment depends on how the engagement runs.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client decides the interim’s status; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

In the IIM’s survey, the average day rate was £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

07/ interim cio day rate

Interim CIO day rate: what moves it

Exec Capital publishes an interim CIO day rate of £800–£2,000 in 2026, and splits it by mandate.

An SME or scale-up sits at £700–£1,200 a day, a mid-market or private-equity-backed business at £1,000–£1,800, and a financial-services or regulated business at £1,200–£2,200.

A major transformation programme or a large corporate sits at £1,500–£2,500+.

Exec Capital’s bands rise with regulation and with the scale of the programme or the business.

For the market as a whole, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average day rate at £907 across all functions, £1,004 in the private sector and £700 in the public sector.

It is an all-function average, not a CIO rate, but it shows where the CIO bands sit.

The Institute of Interim Management is the professional membership body for interim managers, and BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT is the chartered body for the IT profession.

Neither sets a rate; membership of either is worth asking about.

08/ other routes

Interim, permanent or fractional: three ways to pay for the seat

A permanent CIO is paid a salary with benefits; see CIO salary.

An interim CIO is paid by the day for full-time work over a fixed term, which is this page.

A fractional CIO is paid by the day for part of the week, often on a monthly retainer; see fractional CIO salary.

If the need is ongoing but part-time, a fractional CIO usually costs less than an interim.

09/ questions

Interim CIO salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim CIO.

An interim CIO is paid a day rate, not a salary. Exec Capital publishes £800–£2,000 a day in 2026, depending on the mandate. At 220 days that would be £176,000 to £440,000 (our arithmetic, a ceiling with no gaps), but the IIM’s 2026 survey records an average of 148 days billed.
Exec Capital publishes £700–£1,200 a day at an SME or scale-up, £1,000–£1,800 in the mid-market or a private-equity-backed business, £1,200–£2,200 in a regulated sector, and £1,500–£2,500+ on a major transformation or at a large corporate.
They are paid differently. Robert Half’s 2026 national median for a permanent CIO is £150,250 in base salary, with employer’s National Insurance and pension on top. An interim chief information officer bills a day rate and funds their own pension, holidays and gaps. See CIO salary.
The day rate times the days worked. At £1,000 a day, inside Exec Capital’s mid-market band, a five-day week costs £5,000 (our arithmetic). Budget for the full term of the mandate. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist; there is no salary, pension or bonus on top.
Define the mandate and its end point, match the day rate to the mandate, and settle the IR35 status before the start date. See hire an interim CIO.
Exec Capital puts a typical interim CIO assignment at three to nine months. Across all functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months.
It depends on how the engagement runs, not the title. A medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides (HMRC). See our IR35 guide.
