Fractional transformation director jobs · hire a fractional transformation director to own the change
Fractional transformation director jobs are change-leadership roles held for part of the week: a senior leader who owns a business’s transformation, from the case for change to the benefits landing, for agreed days. To hire a fractional transformation director, write down what must be different at the end, who answers for it, and how many days the work needs.
We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Operations and change leadership roles are on the board below.

Leaders disagree on when a fractional hire makes sense: many back one for a defined mandate, others want full-time ownership. A transformation is the clearest test of that question.

Current operations and change leadership roles
Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a transformation director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
Fractional transformation director jobs: owning the change, part of the week
A transformation director owns a change to how the business works: a new operating model, a merger of two teams, a move onto new systems, a cost programme, the adoption of AI across a function. The job is the case for change, the sequence, the decisions that unblock it, the people side, and proof at the end that the benefits arrived. A fractional transformation director does that for agreed days a week and is named as the owner between those days.
The titles the seat goes by
Listings use several titles for the same seat, including fractional transformation leader and head of AI and transformation. Where the change is led by AI, the director owns the data questions too: the ICO’s guidance on AI and data protection applies the UK GDPR to AI systems and covers explaining AI-assisted decisions to the people affected. Where the change is mostly technology, compare fractional CIO and fractional CTO candidates before you hire.
What our board lists
The board below lists COO and operations roles, with change and technology leadership roles when there are few. For operations leadership in full, see fractional operations director jobs.
02/ scope
How to hire a fractional transformation director
1. Define the end state and the benefits
Write down what will be different when the work is done and how you will know: fewer steps in a process, a system switched off, a team restructured, a cost taken out. A transformation without named benefits has no finish line, and no way to judge the person leading it.
2. Separate owning the change from running the plan
Decide whether you are hiring the person who answers for the outcome or the person who manages the delivery. The first is a transformation director; the second is a programme director. A large programme often needs both. The comparison below sets out the difference.
3. Choose fractional or interim
If the change needs senior judgement and decisions a few days a week while your own team does the work, hire a fractional director. If the seat is empty, the timetable is tight or the business needs a leader in the room every day, bring in an interim; see interim executive recruitment. The section below sets out how to choose.
4. Test on a change they have landed
Before you hire, ask each candidate to walk through a transformation they owned: the case, the benefits they committed to, what they stopped, how they handled the people affected, and what was measurably different a year on. Take references from the chief executive or board they answered to, not only from the team.
What we do on a transformation brief
We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. Every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

05/ transformation director vs programme director
Transformation director vs programme director who owns the change, who runs the plan
Transformation director vs programme director comes down to one question: who answers if the change does not deliver what it promised? Government project delivery makes the split explicit, and businesses can borrow it.
In government, the senior responsible owner is accountable for a programme meeting its objectives, delivering the required outcomes and realising the required benefits, and owns the business case. The Teal Book places the programme manager beneath them, accountable to the SRO for managing the programme day to day, and notes that on larger programmes the role may be called programme director. The Association for Project Management defines programme management as the coordinated management of projects and business-as-usual activities to achieve beneficial change, with the programme manager responsible for day-to-day management.
In a company, a transformation director usually plays the owner’s part: the case, the benefits, the calls only a senior leader can make. A programme director plays the delivery part. A fractional transformation director can own the change on part of the week; a programme director on a large programme is usually needed every day. If the change is really the running of the operation, hire a fractional COO instead.
06/ fractional vs interim
Fractional vs interim transformation director part of the week, or every day for a term
An interim transformation director works full-time for a fixed term, usually through their own company, and leaves when the job is done. A fractional transformation director works an agreed share of the week, often for longer, and often alongside other clients. Hire interim when the seat is empty, the deadline is close or the change needs a leader on site every day. Hire fractional when your own people will do the work and need senior direction, decisions and challenge on set days.
In the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey, change or transformation management is the most common kind of interim assignment. The same survey puts the average interim day rate at £907 and the average assignment at 10.0 months, averages across all interim disciplines rather than a transformation rate. The IIM says its 2026 edition also includes its first probe into fractional interim management.
For interim cover across roles, see interim executive recruitment; for an operations-led change on part of the week, fractional COO jobs; for full-time operations cover, interim COO.
07/ people and ir35
The people side, and IR35 for the director
Most transformations change jobs, and changing jobs brings duties. Acas describes consultation as the employer talking and listening about changes that affect employees, and says it matters for changes to work practices, policies and contracts. In some cases it is legally required: above a threshold of proposed redundancies or dismissals, the employer must consult collectively, and GOV.UK sets out the steps and notice periods. A fractional transformation director plans the change so that consultation comes before the decision, not after it.
Where the director works through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. In most cases the client decides the status; for a small client outside the public sector, the director’s own company decides. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.
