Interim product manager salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim product manager earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim product manager is paid a day rate, not a salary.

IT Jobs Watch puts the median contract product manager rate at £550 a day, from 343 daily rates quoted in the six months to 5 October 2026, with the middle half between £463 and £600.

In London the median is £570.

An interim product manager salary is really the day rate times the days worked, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.

When you hire an interim product manager through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim product roles on the board

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a Interim Product Manager brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How an interim product manager is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim product manager runs a product or a product area full-time for a defined period: a launch, a platform migration, cover for a departure or parental leave, or while a permanent search runs.

The work is the product manager role in the government’s Digital and Data Capability Framework: deciding what the team builds next, and why, against user and business needs.

Interim product managers are engaged as contractors, so the published contract day rates are the benchmark for the seat.

The interim invoices for the days worked, through their own company or an umbrella company, or is paid through PAYE by an agency.

There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim product manager

1. Define the work and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a release, a migration, a discovery phase, a handover to a permanent hire.

A defined piece of work is easier to price and easier to judge at the end.

For a public service, the Service Standard sets the bar, starting with understanding users and their needs.

The Service Manual covers agile delivery, design and measuring success, useful for a discovery phase anywhere.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the level to the work

A lead product manager costs more than a product manager by the day as well as by the year.

Robert Walters puts a London lead product manager at £600–£1,050 a day on PAYE, against £440–£540 for a product manager.

Pay for the level the work needs.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent product people, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

If the seat needs a permanent owner after the interim, see product manager salary for permanent pay.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ interim product manager day rate

Interim product manager day rate by level and place

The interim product manager day rate rises with the level.

3Search puts a product manager with one to three years’ experience at £225–£300 a day and one with three to five years at £350–£450.

It puts a senior product manager at £450–£600, and a product lead or group product manager at £450–£650.

IT Jobs Watch’s advertised median is £550 a day across the country, £515 outside London and £570 in London.

Robert Walters, which covers London only, puts a product manager on a PAYE contract at £440–£540 a day, a technical product manager or owner at £440–£710 and a lead product manager at £600–£1,050.

09/ interim product manager salary

Interim product manager salary, annualised

An interim product manager salary is a figure people search for, but no interim is paid one.

To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.

At IT Jobs Watch’s £550 median, 220 days would bill £121,000.

At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £81,400.

Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and the £550 median, comes to £12,100 (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost.

The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.

For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent product manager is £66,750 in base salary, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

See product manager salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.

10/ the other routes

Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a full-time product manager for a fixed period.

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see product manager salary.

If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional product manager on set days may cost less over the same months; see fractional product manager jobs.

For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional product manager salary.

In London the median is £570. Robert Walters puts a London product manager on a PAYE contract at £440–£540 a day, average £490.
An interim product manager is paid a day rate rather than a salary. At the £550 median, 220 days would bill £121,000 and the IIM’s average of 148 days billed would bill £81,400 (our arithmetic). That is gross income before the interim’s costs, pension and tax.

Define the work and its end date, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and match the level to the work. SFIA’s product management skill sets out levels of responsibility you can map the seat to. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
The day rate times the days. At IT Jobs Watch’s £550 median, a month of about 22 working days is £12,100 (our arithmetic). There is no employer’s National Insurance or pension on top when the interim works outside IR35 through their own company. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months and the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
