Interim head of product salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim head of product earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim head of product is paid a day rate, not a salary.

Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts a contract Head/VP of Product in London at £850–£1,050 a day through PAYE, with an average of £950.

IT Jobs Watch gives a median of £1,038 a day for head of product management contracts, from four rates quoted in the six months to 5 October 2026.

What an interim head of product salary comes to over a year depends on the days billed, not the rate alone.

When you hire an interim head of product through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim product leadership roles on the board

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Interim Head of Product brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How an interim head of product is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim head of product holds the product seat full-time for a defined period: after a departure, through a relaunch or a platform migration, or while the permanent search runs.

The seat is the top of the government’s product management career path: it owns the product strategy, the roadmap and the product managers who deliver it.

That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.

There is no salary, no paid holiday and no employer pension, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

Robert Walters labels its contract rates PAYE: paid through a payroll, with tax deducted at source.

An interim who works through their own company is paid differently, taking salary and dividends from what the company earns after its costs and Corporation Tax.

Ask which basis a quoted rate is on.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim head of product

1. Define the mandate and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a roadmap reset, a launch, a product team rebuilt, a handover to a permanent hire.

A defined end date lets candidates price the assignment.

For how a product team measures a service and runs agile delivery, the government’s Service Manual is a free reference both sides can point to.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the record to the mandate

Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: the launch that shipped, the roadmap that changed, the team left behind.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent product leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

08/ interim head of product day rate

Interim head of product day rate by source

The interim head of product day rate sits around £1,000 on both published sources.

Robert Walters puts a London Head/VP of Product contract at £850–£1,050 a day through PAYE, average £950.

In the same table, a London product director is £800–£1,200, average £1,000, and a lead product manager £600–£1,050, average £825.

IT Jobs Watch’s median for head of product management contracts is £1,038 a day, with the middle half from £975 to £1,050.

That rests on four quoted rates in six months, so treat it as a check on the Robert Walters figure, not a market on its own.

Its median outside London is £1,025.

09/ the year

Interim head of product salary, annualised

No interim is paid a salary.

To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.

At Robert Walters’ £950 average, 220 days would bill £209,000.

At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £140,600.

Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and £950 a day, comes to £20,900 (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost.

The interim pays their own pension, holidays and the gaps between assignments out of it.

For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 national median for a permanent head of product is £97,750 in base salary, and Robert Walters’ London average in a large enterprise is £154,100.

An employer adds employer’s National Insurance and pension under automatic enrolment on top of either.

See head of product salary for the permanent figures in full.

Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a full-time product leader for a fixed period.

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see head of product salary.

If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional product leader works set days on a day rate or retainer; see fractional head of product jobs.

For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional head of product salary.

11/ questions

Interim head of product salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim head of product.

An interim head of product is paid a day rate rather than a salary. At Robert Walters’ £950 London average, 220 days would bill £209,000 and the IIM’s average of 148 days billed would bill £140,600 (our arithmetic). That is gross income, before the interim’s costs, pension and tax.
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts a London Head/VP of Product contract at £850–£1,050 a day through PAYE, average £950. IT Jobs Watch gives a median of £1,038 a day for head of product management contracts, from four quoted rates (IT Jobs Watch).
The day rate times the days. At £950 a day, a month of about 22 working days is £20,900 (our arithmetic). Ask whether a quote is a PAYE rate or a rate through the interim’s own company, because the two are taxed differently. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
No source publishes a figure for this seat alone. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months and the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months.
Define the mandate and its end date, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and check the candidate’s record on comparable assignments. See head of product jobs for roles on the board.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
No. A CPO owns company-level product strategy and sits on the executive team; a head of product usually owns the roadmap and the product managers, often under a CPO. See interim CPO salary for the seat above.
