Fractional head of product salary · pro-rata, 2026

What a fractional head of product earns, pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes a fractional head of product day rate.

The figures here are the permanent head of product salary from Robert Half spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

On that basis, a fractional head of product salary for one day a week comes to £20,240 a year at Robert Half’s £97,750 national median (our arithmetic).

When you hire a fractional head of product through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Product leadership roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Fractional Head of Product brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How we work out the figure, and what it is not

A fractional head of product leads product for part of the week: the roadmap, the priorities, the product managers and the trade-offs between users and the business.

The government’s Digital and Data Capability Framework places head of product at the top of its product manager levels.

A fractional one is paid by the day or on a monthly retainer, not a salary.

No independent source we can verify publishes a day rate for the seat.

So we start from the permanent salary.

Robert Half, a recruiter, puts the national head of product salary at a £97,750 median in 2026, with a range of £77,000–£113,250.

Its London median is £133,000, with a range of £104,750–£154,000.

We divide the salary by 220 working days to get a day equivalent, and round it to the nearest £10.

We multiply that by 46 working weeks and by the days a week.

The 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions, allowing for weekends, holidays and bank holidays.

The result is a floor for comparison.

It is what the permanent salary comes to for the same days.

It is not what a fractional head of product charges, and it leaves out bonus, pension and the costs a self-employed leader carries.

The quotes you receive are the real figures.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional head of product

1. Count the days the product needs

List what the seat must own: the roadmap, discovery, the product managers, the release rhythm.

Estimate the days a month it takes.

The days set the cost; the scope sets the seniority.

2. Say what the role decides

The GOV.UK Service Manual sets out what a product manager does in a service team: the product vision, user needs and the priorities for each sprint.

Write down which of those the fractional lead decides, and which stay with the founder or the CTO.

3. Compare quotes on the same days

Ask every candidate for a day rate, the days a week they can commit and their notice.

Set each quote against the pro-rata floor in the table below for the same days.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent product leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

Our arithmetic on Robert Half’s 2026 permanent head of product salaries. Day equivalent = salary ÷ 220 working days, rounded to the nearest £10. A year = day equivalent × 46 working weeks × days a week. A pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate. Robert Half is a recruiter.

07/ economics

What to check in the quotes before you agree a day rate

Read every quote on three terms: the day rate, the days a week, and the notice on both sides.

A lower rate on more days can cost more than a higher rate on fewer.

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the fractional leader’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

If the person’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to the invoice.

A day rate carries no employer pension: an employer pays into a workplace pension for an employee, not for a supplier.

Nor does it carry paid holiday: the client pays for the days worked.

Equity is a separate question.

Enterprise Management Incentives carry a working-time requirement for the option holder, which a part-week leader may not meet.

Take advice before you offer options in place of part of the rate.

Fractional head of product day rate: why we print a floor, not a rate

We looked for a fractional head of product day rate we could stand behind.

The figures online are providers’ own price lists or US-dollar marketplaces.

None is an independent count of what the seat is paid here.

So the page shows one verified source, the permanent salary, and our arithmetic on it.

At Robert Half’s £97,750 national median, the day equivalent is £440.

At its £133,000 London median, it is £600 (our arithmetic, rounded to the nearest £10).

Use the floor to test a quote, not to set one.

For the board-level seat, see CPO salary and fractional CPO salary.

10/ the other routes

Fractional, permanent or interim: three ways to fill the seat

A permanent hire is paid a salary, bonus and package; see head of product salary for the benchmarks.

An interim covers the seat full-time for a fixed period on a day rate; see interim head of product salary.

A third route is a part-time employee on a pro-rata salary.

A part-time worker must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one, with some benefits applied pro rata (GOV.UK).

For the role in full, see what a head of product does.

11/ questions

Fractional head of product salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional head of product.

A fractional head of product is paid a day rate or retainer, not a salary. No independent source publishes that rate. Pro-rata of Robert Half’s £97,750 national median permanent salary, one day a week comes to £20,240 a year and two days to £40,480 (our arithmetic, a floor for comparison).
We take Robert Half’s 2026 permanent head of product salaries, divide by 220 working days and round to the nearest £10. We then multiply by 46 working weeks and by the days a week. The 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions.
No independent source we can verify publishes one. The day equivalent of the permanent salary is £350–£510 across Robert Half’s £77,000–£113,250 national range, and £440 at the £97,750 median (our arithmetic). That is a floor for comparison, not a rate the seat is quoted.
The day rate you agree times the days. As a floor, the national median comes to £20,240 a year for one day a week and £60,720 for three (our arithmetic). Add VAT if the person is registered. We set out the day rate, availability and IR35 position for every candidate on the shortlist of 3–5.
Pro-rata of Robert Half’s £133,000 London median, the day equivalent is £600, or £27,600 a year for one day a week (our arithmetic). It is a floor for comparison, not a London rate.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the fractional leader’s own company (HMRC). It is set contract by contract, not per person.
Count the days the product needs, say what the role decides, and compare every quote on the same days. See fractional head of product jobs for roles on the board and how we run a brief.
