CPO salary · chief product officer · permanent pay
What a CPO earns, in base, bonus and equity
The average CPO salary is £195,000, typically £140,000 to £250,000 depending on company stage, sector and location, in Intelligent People’s 2026 guide to product management pay.
Its figures are offers accepted across 206 UK product placements between July 2025 and July 2026.
In London, Morgan McKinley’s 2026 salary guide puts a chief product officer at £190,000 to £230,000, as an estimated average salary range.
Neither source splits base from bonus.
Equity usually comes on top.
When you hire a chief product officer through us, permanent, interim or fractional, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
What sets the pay of a chief product officer
A chief product officer owns product strategy, the roadmap across every product line and usually pricing, and reports to the CEO.
A head of product runs a product line or the product-management team.
The two are different jobs, and the gap shows in the pay.
For the role itself, see what a CPO does.
Intelligent People’s 2026 guide sets out the ladder from its own placements: head of product £100,000 on average, director of product £150,000, VP product £162,500 and chief product officer £195,000.
Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts head of product base pay lower, at £77,000 to £113,250 with a median of £97,750.
The two measure different things: Robert Half projects starting salaries, Intelligent People reports offers accepted through one specialist recruiter.
Scope moves the number more than the title.
Intelligent People’s range for a CPO runs from £140,000 to £250,000, and it names company stage, sector and location as what moves it.
A CPO who owns pricing, design and product operations across several lines sits towards the top.
A first product executive at an early-stage company, with a small team, sits towards the bottom.
For the seat below in detail, see head of product salary.
02/ scope
How to hire a chief product officer at the right salary
1. Write down the scope
Say what the role owns: strategy, the roadmap, pricing, design, product operations, or some mix.
Say who reports in and who the role reports to.
A brief that leaves pricing and the board out draws a head of product shortlist at head of product pay.
2. Set base, bonus and equity together
The CIPD’s introduction to reward separates fixed base pay from variable pay, which is not guaranteed.
For a CPO, write the bonus measures, the equity grant and its vesting into the offer, next to the base.
3. Choose the route
Permanent suits a business that needs a product executive every day: hire a chief product officer on that basis, or read our guide to chief product officer recruitment.
If you need cover for a vacancy or a fixed programme, see interim CPO.
If you need senior product judgement for part of the week, see fractional CPO.
What we do on a CPO brief
We recruit permanent, interim, fractional, part-time and temporary product leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

04/ rates by stage
CPO salary by source, nationally and in London
Permanent salaries for the chief product officer and the product seats below it, quoted as each source publishes them. Intelligent People reports offers accepted through its own product placements; Morgan McKinley publishes an estimated average range; Robert Half publishes starting-salary projections for base pay. All three are recruiters.
05/ economics
What a CPO salary costs the employer
The salary is not the whole cost.
For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds).
Under automatic enrolment the employer pays at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, and those earnings include bonuses (GOV.UK).
Many schemes pay more.
A cash bonus is earnings too: HMRC has PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base.
Equity is the part that varies most.
Intelligent People reports that every product executive role it filled in the last 12 months included equity.
Qualifying companies can grant Enterprise Management Incentive options, which carry tax advantages for the employee, subject to company size and a working-time test.
State the grant, the vesting and the leaver terms in the offer.

07/ chief product officer salary
Chief product officer salary in the UK: what the sources say
Intelligent People puts the UK chief product officer salary at £195,000 on average, with a typical range of £140,000 to £250,000 depending on company stage, sector and location.
It drew the figures from offers accepted through its own product placements between July 2025 and July 2026, and says the ranges are typical low-to-high offers, not limits.
Read a single figure with care.
A placement average reflects the companies that recruiter works with.
A job-ad count reflects only the roles that publish a salary.
Ask each source what it measured before you set it against an offer.
Check the acronym too.
CPO also stands for chief people officer and chief procurement officer, and salary sites mix them.
This page is about the product role.
For the people role, see fractional CHRO salary.
08/ cpo salary london
CPO salary in London: the London range
Morgan McKinley’s 2026 salary guide puts the chief product officer salary in London at £190,000 to £230,000, as an estimated average range.
It says its salaries draw on placement data and its recruiters’ knowledge of the market, and represent an average across industry, location and seniority.
For the seat below, Robert Half puts a head of product in London at £104,750 to £154,000, with a median of £133,000, against £97,750 nationally.
The London premium shows at both levels; how far a London CPO sits above the head of product band depends on the size of the product organisation and the equity mix.
For an official comparison by region, the ONS publishes employee earnings by region and occupation in ASHE Table 15.
Its occupation groups are broader than the CPO title, but it uses one method across every region.
09/ other routes
Salary, day rate or retainer: the other two routes
A permanent salary buys a product executive every day, with notice periods, benefits and equity on both sides.
Interim and fractional product leaders are paid differently: an interim by the day, full-time for a fixed term; a fractional leader by the day or by a monthly retainer, for part of the week.
Their tax treatment turns on how the engagement runs, under the off-payroll rules.
For what each costs, see interim CPO salary and fractional CPO salary.
For roles open now, see CPO jobs.
