Interim CPO salary · day rates · chief product officer
What an interim CPO earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim CPO salary is a day rate.
Leadership Services, a provider of interim and fractional leaders, put an interim chief product officer at £900 to £1,400 a day for many SME and mid-market situations in June 2026, and at £1,500 a day or more for urgent turnaround or regulated products.
Across every discipline, not product alone, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.
When you hire an interim CPO through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Interim CPO brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
How an interim CPO is paid and why it is not a salary
An interim CPO works full-time, or close to it, for a fixed term: covering a vacancy, resetting a roadmap or steadying a product team through a change.
The pay is a day rate for the days worked.
There is no salary, bonus, employer pension or equity on top, and no pay between assignments.
That last point matters when you compare an interim rate with a salary.
The IIM’s 2026 survey found interims billed 148 days on average over the year, with an average gap of 3.2 months between assignments.
A day rate has to cover the days that are not billed.
The work itself is product leadership at the top of the ladder that the government’s digital and data capability framework sets out for product roles, which runs up to head of product.
An interim CPO sits above that, accountable for strategy and the roadmap across the product organisation.
For what the role covers stage by stage, see interim CPO.
02/ scope
How to set the day rate when you hire an interim CPO
1. Name the mandate
Leadership Services ties the rate to the reason for the work: £900 to £1,400 a day for many SME and mid-market situations, £1,500 or more for urgent turnaround, regulated environments or complex stakeholder politics.
Write down which you are buying.
2. Fix the days and the term
Say how many days a week, for how long, and what the interim must leave behind: a roadmap reset, a hired successor, a rebuilt team.
The term and the hand-over are part of the price.
3. Settle IR35 before the rate
A medium or large client makes the off-payroll (IR35) status determination.
The same gross day rate pays the interim differently inside and outside IR35, so agree the status first.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.
What we do on an interim CPO brief
We recruit interim, fractional, permanent, part-time and temporary product leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
To start a search, see hire an interim CPO.

Interim CPO salary day rates by mandate and sector
Published day rates, quoted as each source publishes them. Leadership Services’ figures are a provider’s planning ranges for interim CPOs; the IIM’s are survey averages across every interim discipline, not CPO rates.
05/ economics
A day rate against a salary: what the numbers mean
Our arithmetic, for comparison only: at £900 to £1,400 a day, 220 billed days would come to £198,000 to £308,000.
That is a ceiling, every working day billed, not a salary.
At the IIM’s average of 148 billed days, the same rates come to £133,200 to £207,200.
A permanent CPO costs more than the salary.
For 2026 to 2027 the employer pays National Insurance at 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC) and at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings (GOV.UK).
An interim outside IR35 brings no employer National Insurance or pension for the client.
Inside IR35, the off-payroll rules mean the interim pays broadly the same Income Tax and National Insurance as an employee would.
For the permanent comparison, Intelligent People puts the average chief product officer salary at £195,000 in its 2026 guide, from offers accepted through its own placements.

07/ interim cpo day rate
Interim CPO day rate: what moves it
Leadership Services publishes an interim CPO day rate of £900 to £1,400 for many SME and mid-market situations, and £1,500 or more for urgent turnaround, regulated environments or complex stakeholder politics.
It is a provider’s planning range, dated June 2026, not a survey result.
The sector moves rates too.
Across every discipline, the IIM’s 2026 survey found an average of £1,004 a day in the private sector, £700 in the public sector and £728 in the third sector.
Scope moves it most.
A CPO who must reset the roadmap, rebuild the team and front the board in the same quarter prices above one asked to hold the line until a permanent hire starts.
08/ interim chief product officer salary
Interim chief product officer salary: over an assignment
An interim chief product officer salary is best read over the assignment, not the year.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim assignment at 10.0 months across every discipline.
At £900 to £1,400 a day, the fee for the term follows from the days a week and the months agreed.
Tax treatment depends on how the engagement runs.
Under the off-payroll working rules, a medium or large client decides the status; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax tool helps with the decision.
Across every discipline, the IIM found £949 a day outside IR35 and £830 inside.
For the other two routes, see CPO salary for permanent pay and fractional CPO salary for part-week rates and retainers.
