01/ definition
What is an interim CPO?
An interim CPO is the Chief Product Officer, full-time, for a fixed term. Not a product consultant and not a part-time fractional CPO: the person who owns the roadmap, the product team and the product numbers until the job is done or the permanent hire arrives.
01 · cadence
The CPO seat, five days a week.
An interim CPO takes the role in full — the roadmap, the product team, discovery and the product P&L — rather than advising from outside it.
02/ scope
What an interim Chief Product Officer owns
The interim CPO carries product accountability for the term; product managers and engineering keep the delivery.
- Product vision and strategy
- Roadmap and prioritisation
- Product team structure and hiring
- Discovery and customer insight
- Pricing and packaging
- Product metrics and board reporting
- Product–engineering operating model
- Handover to the permanent CPO
- Writing individual user stories
- Sprint ceremonies
- Feature-level specs
- Design execution
- QA and release management
- Day-to-day analytics requests

06/ tax
Is an interim CPO tax-deductible?
General position under UK rules, with the HMRC source for each point. Not tax advice — check your own case with your accountant.
01 · DEDUCTIBLE
The fees are a business expense
An interim CPO’s fees, like a salary, are deductible against profits when incurred wholly and exclusively for the trade (HMRC BIM37000). At the 25% main rate, each £1,000 of fees costs a profitable company £750 after relief.
02 · EMPLOYER NI
Employer NI follows IR35 status
A permanent CPO carries employer National Insurance at 15% (gov.uk). An interim engaged through their own company carries none when the engagement is outside IR35; inside IR35, the fee-payer deducts tax and NI and pays employer NI. Status depends on how the engagement runs in practice.
03 · WHO DECIDES
IR35 status, by company size
Medium and large clients determine the interim’s status themselves; for a small private-sector client, the interim’s own company decides (HMRC off-payroll guidance).

When to hire an interim CPO
Four situations where companies hire an interim CPO — and where most interim Chief Product Officer roles come from.
Which sounds like you?
The roadmap, the product team and the engineering relationship lose their owner mid-quarter.
- → Hold the roadmap
- → Keep the team
- → Run the search
Growth is flat, the roadmap is a feature list and nobody can say what the product is for.
- → Strategy reset
- → Kill list
- → Metrics that matter
Investors or buyers want a credible product story and a leader who can defend it.
- → Product due diligence
- → Roadmap narrative
- → Pricing
A founder-led product that needs a professional product function built around it.
- → Team design

08/ guide
Hiring an interim CPO: what to get right
Be clear which CPO you mean. In product companies CPO is the Chief Product Officer; in HR it is the Chief People Officer. This page is the product role — for people leadership see interim CHRO and HR Director.
Start with the outcome. An interim CPO is hired to leave something finished: a reset strategy the board has signed off, a roadmap the team believes, a relaunch shipped, a permanent CPO hired. Write that and a date into the brief.
Choose between interim and fractional. If product needs a full-time owner for a few months, hire an interim CPO. If it needs senior direction a day or two a week, a fractional CPO is cheaper — £6,000–£12,000 a month.
Budget from the published bands. Interim CPO day rates run £900–£1,400 for SME and mid-market work and above £1,500 for turnaround or regulated products; Intelligent People quotes £1,000–£1,500. Six months full-time on the £900–£1,400 band is roughly £117,000–£182,000 — our arithmetic. A permanent London CPO is £150,000–£245,000 base (IdeaPlan) before equity and on-costs.
If you are looking for interim CPO jobs or interim head of product roles rather than hiring, the live board below lists current roles; fractional CPO jobs cover the part-time market.
08.1/ interim cpo recruitment
Interim CPO recruitment: how to assess a product leader
Interim CPO recruitment goes wrong when the interview tests how well a candidate talks about product rather than how they lead it. Start with a clear description of the level. The UK government’s digital and data capability framework describes its most senior product level, head of product, as leading on product strategy and setting and raising standards for product management, with skills such as strategic ownership, managing product outcomes and stakeholder relationship management at expert level. A Chief Product Officer should show all of that, and own company-level product strategy at the executive table as well.
Then test it. The CIPD’s guidance on selection methods favours structured interviews, with the same questions scored against agreed criteria, and skill-based tasks that resemble the real job. For an interim CPO, that could be a review of your roadmap and the evidence behind it, or a working session with the product team. Take references from recent assignments on what shipped and what changed.
We send a shortlist of three to five interim CPOs, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. If the gap is in engineering rather than product, see hiring an interim CTO; for part-time product leadership, a fractional CPO.
09/ contract
Interim CPO jobs: how the assignment is contracted
Interim CPO jobs are usually contracted through the interim’s own limited company, on a fixed-term agreement that sets out the scope, the term, the day rate, the days a week and notice on each side. The scope is the outcome from the brief: the reset, the roadmap, the relaunch or the cover the assignment exists to deliver.
IR35 status turns on how the assignment runs in practice, not on what the contract calls it. HMRC looks at substitution, control and whether either side must offer or accept further work. Medium and large clients make the status determination; for a small private-sector client, the interim’s own company does (HMRC off-payroll guidance). See the IR35 guide.
