Product manager roles on the board

Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a Product Manager brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.

01/ the role

What a product manager does, and what sets the pay

A product manager decides what a team builds next and why, balancing what users need against what the business needs.

The government’s Digital and Data Capability Framework sets out five product management levels: associate product manager, product manager, senior product manager, lead product manager and head of product.

Pay rises with each step.

Level sets the pay first.

3Search, a product recruiter, puts a product manager with one to three years’ experience at £45,000–£60,000 and one with three to five years at £70,000–£95,000.

It puts a senior product manager at £85,000–£120,000, and a product lead or group product manager at £95,000–£125,000.

Specialism adds to it.

Robert Half’s 2026 median for an AI product manager is £73,750 nationally, against £66,750 for a product manager.

In London its AI product manager median is £100,250.

The sources measure different things.

Robert Half’s figures are projected starting base salaries for 2026, built from candidates its recruiters have placed and checked against vacancy data.

IT Jobs Watch reports the salaries quoted in job adverts.

Robert Walters reports basic salaries from roles advertised over 12 months, London only for this seat.

Robert Half, Robert Walters and 3Search are recruiters.

02/ scope

How to set the pay when you hire a product manager

1. Name the level

Say whether you need someone to own one feature area or a whole product, and whether they will manage other product managers.

A senior or lead product manager costs more than a product manager, and the bands overlap.

2. Choose the route

A permanent hire suits a product that needs an owner every day.

For full-time cover over a fixed period, see interim product manager salary for contract day rates.

For product judgement on set days a week, see fractional product manager jobs.

For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional product manager salary.

3. Set base, bonus and equity together

The figures on this page are base salaries.

Bonus and equity sit on top at many technology businesses.

Ask candidates to state base, bonus and equity separately, so you compare like with like.

What we do on a product brief

We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary product people, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

04/ the route

Fractional, interim or permanent?

Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.

How much of the week does the work fill?
Is there a fixed end or a programme?
Does the seat sit on the board for years?
Is the need now, or can it wait for a search?

The route · Fractional

A fractional product manager.

The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.

A fractional product manager holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.

06/ economics

What the salary costs the business, beyond the base

A salary is not the whole cost of an employee.

For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds).

On Robert Half’s £66,750 median, that is about £9,260 a year (our arithmetic).

Under automatic enrolment, the employer must pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, and those earnings include bonuses (GOV.UK).

A cash bonus is pay too.

HMRC treats it as earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base.

A contractor is paid by the day instead; see interim product manager salary.
