Interim marketing director salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim marketing director earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim marketing director salary is paid by the day, not the year.
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts the PAYE contract day rate for a London marketing director at £660–£1,070, with an average of £865.
Exec Capital puts interim marketing directors at £500–£900 a day in SMEs and scale-ups, rising to £1,200–£1,800 in large corporate or brand-led businesses.
The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you hire an interim marketing director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
How an interim marketing director is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim marketing director runs the marketing function full-time for a defined period: a departure ahead of a launch, a rebrand, a repositioning, or the months while a permanent hire is found.
The interim invoices the business for the days worked, either through their own company or on a contract paid through payroll.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim marketing director
1. Define the mandate and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a launch, a pipeline target, a rebuilt team, a handover to a permanent hire.
A clear end point keeps the cost to the days you need.
Whatever the mandate, the campaigns the interim signs off must meet the CAP Code that the Advertising Standards Authority enforces.
Email and text campaigns also fall under the ICO’s electronic mail marketing rules.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Match the record to the mandate
Ask for commercial outcomes from comparable assignments: pipeline marketing generated, cost per acquisition by channel, a launch that hit its number.
B2B and consumer marketing are different jobs.
The CIM’s Chartered Marketer status is a useful signal of professional standing, not a requirement.

What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent marketing leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
If the seat needs a permanent owner after the interim, hire a marketing director on that basis.
03/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional marketing director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional marketing director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim marketing director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim marketing director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent marketing director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim marketing director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent marketing director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
04/ rates by stage
Interim marketing director salary day rates by company and source
Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Robert Walters’ rate is a PAYE contract rate (paid through payroll) for London, and its average is the mean of advertised roles. Exec Capital publishes interim market rates by company type. Morgan McKinley publishes contract daily rates by sector and years of experience. All three are recruiters. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not marketing alone.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
Robert Walters’ London figure is a PAYE rate, paid through payroll, so compare it with an inside-IR35 quote rather than a limited-company one.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

07/ interim marketing director day rate
Interim marketing director day rate by company and sector
The interim marketing director day rate rises with the size of the business.
Exec Capital puts an SME or scale-up with up to £30m revenue at £500–£900 a day, a mid-market or PE-backed business at £800–£1,400 and a large corporate or brand-led business at £1,200–£1,800.
Sector and experience move it too.
Morgan McKinley’s 2026 contract rates for a London marketing director in financial services run from £500–£550 a day with up to three years’ experience to £750–£1,000 with more than five.
In London commerce and industry the same bands run from £400–£475 to £550–£650, and in Surrey from £400–£425 to £475–£550.
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey gives the London picture across all sectors: a PAYE contract range of £660–£1,070 a day, with an average of £865.
08/ the year
Interim marketing director salary, annualised
An interim marketing director salary is a figure people search for, but no interim is paid one.
To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.
At Robert Walters’ London average of £865, 220 days would bill £190,300.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £128,020.
Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and £865 a day, comes to £19,030 (our arithmetic).
If the interim’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to the invoice.
Out of the rate, the interim carries the gaps between assignments, and, through their own company, their pension, holidays and insurance too.
For scale, Robert Walters’ London average for a permanent marketing director is £121,100 in a medium enterprise and £178,300 in a large one, and Robert Half’s national median is £79,500, all base salary before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

09/ the other routes
Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits
Interim cover buys a full-time marketing director for a fixed period.
A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see marketing director salary.
If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional marketing director on a day rate or retainer may cost less over the same months.
For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional marketing director salary.
For the board-level seat, see interim CMO salary.
