Interim client services director salary · pro-rata, 2026

What an interim client services director earns · pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes an interim client services director day rate.

The figures here are the permanent client services director salary from ADLIB’s 2026 guides spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

ADLIB puts the permanent salary at £90,000–£150,000 in London and South East agencies, with ADLIB’s average at £110,000, bonuses included.

Divided by 220 working days, that average comes to £500 a day (our arithmetic).

An interim client services director salary is whatever the days billed add up to.

When you hire an interim client services director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Client services and revenue roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Interim Client Services Director brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How an interim client services director is paid, and why we show a pro-rata figure

An interim client services director holds the seat full-time for a defined period: a departure, a major account at risk, a merger of account teams or a gap before a permanent hire.

The interim invoices the business for the days worked.

There is no salary, employer pension or paid holiday behind the rate.

We looked for an independent UK source that publishes an interim day rate for the seat.

We found none.

So the seat’s own figures here start from its verified permanent salary: ADLIB’s 2026 guides put a client services director at £90,000–£150,000 in London and South East digital, integrated and branding agencies, and £65,000–£100,000 in the South West, the North and the East Midlands.

Both ranges include bonuses.

Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey of emerging-media businesses puts the median at £110,000.

For the wider interim market, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey covers every function, not client services alone.

It puts the IIM’s average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.

Its average days billed in a year is 148.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

What to check when you hire an interim client services director

1. Compare the quotes you receive

The real figure is the quote.

Ask each candidate for the day rate, the expected length of the assignment and the notice on each side.

Notice works differently for an employee: Acas sets out how notice periods work when an employee resigns or is dismissed.

Then set the quote beside the pro-rata figures below for your region.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

Status is decided by how the engagement runs, not by the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination and gives the interim its reasons.

HMRC sets out which clients count as medium or large, and its CEST tool gives its view on one engagement.

3. Check VAT and what the rate leaves out

If the interim’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to each invoice.

A day rate carries no holiday pay, benefits or employer pension.

Those come with employment: an employer pays into a workplace pension for an enrolled employee.

4. Match the record to the mandate

Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: accounts kept, teams steadied, handovers completed.

The IPA is the professional body for advertising agencies, and the Institute of Customer Service publishes the UK Customer Satisfaction Index, a useful outside read on what clients expect.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent client and commercial leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the route

Fractional, interim or permanent?

Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.

How much of the week does the work fill?
Is there a fixed end or a programme?
Does the seat sit on the board for years?
Is the need now, or can it wait for a search?

The route · Fractional

A fractional client services director.

The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.

A fractional client services director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.

Interim client services director salary pro-rata, our arithmetic

Our arithmetic, not a market rate. Each row starts from ADLIB’s 2026 permanent client services director salary, which includes bonuses: London & South East for digital, integrated and branding agencies, and the South West, North-West, North-East and East Midlands. The day equivalent is the salary ÷ 220 working days, rounded to the nearest £10. The last column multiplies it by 148 days, the IIM’s average days billed in a year across all interim functions (IIM survey, 2026). 220 days is our assumption.

Permanent salary (ADLIB, 2026)Day equivalent (÷ 220)× 148 days (IIM’s average days billed)
London & South East, lowest, £90,000£410£60,680

05/ economics

A day rate is not a salary: what sits outside it

An interim carries the gaps between assignments, their own pension, holidays and insurance.

All of it comes out of the days billed.

That is why the IIM measures days billed, not days in a year.

ADLIB’s ranges include bonuses, so the pro-rata figures here start from salary plus any bonus.

Our IR35 guide sets out the status tests.

07/ the method

How we work the interim figures, step by step

Start from the permanent salary.

In London and the South East, ADLIB’s lowest, average and highest figures are £90,000, £110,000 and £150,000.

Divide each by 220 working days and round to the nearest £10.

That gives £410, £500 and £680 a day (our arithmetic).

Then multiply by 148 days, the IIM’s average days billed in a year across all interim functions.

At £500 a day, that comes to £74,000 (our arithmetic).

In the South West, the North and the East Midlands, ADLIB’s average of £80,000 gives £360 a day and £53,280 over 148 days (our arithmetic).

These are a floor for comparison.

They are not what an interim client services director charges, and no source we can cite says what that is.

The quotes you receive are the market.

09/ questions

Interim client services director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim client services director.

An interim client services director is paid a day rate, not a salary. No independent UK source publishes that rate. As a comparison, ADLIB’s £110,000 London and South East average ÷ 220 working days is £500 a day (our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor, not a market rate).
From the permanent salary. ADLIB’s 2026 guides give £90,000–£150,000 in London and the South East and £65,000–£100,000 in the South West, the North and the East Midlands, bonuses included. We divide by 220 working days, round to the nearest £10, then multiply by 148 days, the IIM’s average days billed. All of it is our arithmetic.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the IIM’s average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector, across every function. It is not a figure for the client services seat.
The day rate times the days. No source we can cite publishes the rate, so compare each quote with the pro-rata figures: £410–£680 a day in London and the South East, £300–£450 in the South West, the North and the East Midlands (our arithmetic). We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
Define the mandate and its end, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and ask each candidate for outcomes from comparable assignments. Then compare day rate, length and notice across the quotes.
No. A day rate carries no holiday pay, benefits or employer pension; the interim funds those from their own income. An employer pays into a workplace pension only for an employee.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC).
If the interim’s company is registered for VAT, yes: VAT is added to each invoice. Ask whether a quote includes it.
