Fractional client services director salary · pro-rata, 2026

What a fractional client services director earns · pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes a fractional client services director day rate.

The figures here are the permanent client services director salary from ADLIB’s 2026 guides spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

ADLIB puts the permanent salary at £90,000–£150,000 in London and South East agencies, with ADLIB’s average at £110,000, bonuses included.

Divided by 220 working days, that average comes to £500 a day (our arithmetic).

A fractional client services director salary is whatever the days sold add up to.

When you hire a fractional client services director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Client services director roles on the board

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Fractional Client Services Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How a fractional client services director is paid, and why we show a pro-rata figure

A fractional client services director runs client relationships and the account team for part of the week, usually one to three days.

The client pays a day rate or a monthly retainer for an agreed number of days.

There is no salary from the client.

We looked for an independent UK source that publishes a day rate for the seat.

We found none: what exists is providers’ own price lists, single job adverts and US-dollar or global freelance figures.

None of those is a market rate for a fractional client services director in the UK, so we do not quote them.

What does exist is a verified permanent salary for the seat.

ADLIB’s 2026 guides put a client services director at £90,000–£150,000 in London and South East digital, integrated and branding agencies, and £65,000–£100,000 in the South West, the North and the East Midlands.

Both ranges include bonuses.

Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey of emerging-media businesses puts the median at £110,000.

A client services director can also be employed part-time on a salary.

A part-time employee must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one, and some benefits are applied pro rata (GOV.UK).

That is a different route from a fractional engagement on a day rate.

02/ scope

What to check when you hire a fractional client services director

1. Compare the quotes you receive

The real figure is the quote.

Ask each candidate for the day rate, the days a week, the minimum term and the notice on each side.

Then set the quote beside the pro-rata figures below for your region.

2. Settle IR35 status

Status is decided by how the engagement runs, not by the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination.

HMRC sets out which clients count as medium or large, and its CEST tool gives its view on one engagement.

3. Check VAT and what the rate leaves out

If the person’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to each invoice.

A day rate also carries no holiday pay, benefits or employer pension.

Those come with employment: an employer pays into a workplace pension for an enrolled employee.

4. Scope the book

Write down the clients, the revenue and the team the seat looks after in its days.

The IPA is the professional body for advertising agencies, and the Institute of Customer Service publishes the UK Customer Satisfaction Index, a useful outside read on what clients expect.

For the management side, the Chartered Management Institute offers leadership qualifications.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent client and commercial leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

To start, hire a fractional client services director.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

Fractional client services director salary pro-rata, our arithmetic

Our arithmetic, not a market rate. Each row starts from ADLIB’s 2026 permanent client services director salary, which includes bonuses: London & South East for digital, integrated and branding agencies, and the South West, North-West, North-East and East Midlands. The day equivalent is the salary ÷ 220 working days, rounded to the nearest £10. The weekly columns multiply it by the days a week and by 46 weeks. 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions.

07/ economics

A day rate is not a salary: what sits outside it

Most fractional directors invoice through their own limited company.

They take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit.

Their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell all come out of the same income.

ADLIB’s ranges include bonuses, so the pro-rata figures here start from salary plus any bonus.

Ask whether a quote is for days alone or for days plus a share of results.

Our IR35 guide sets out the status tests.

09/ the method

How we work the pro-rata figures, step by step

Start from the permanent salary.

In London and the South East, ADLIB’s lowest, average and highest figures are £90,000, £110,000 and £150,000.

Divide each by 220 working days and round to the nearest £10.

That gives £410, £500 and £680 a day (our arithmetic).

Then multiply by the days.

One day a week for 46 weeks is 46 days; two days is 92; three days is 138.

At £500 a day, that comes to £23,000, £46,000 and £69,000 a year (our arithmetic).

In the South West, the North and the East Midlands, ADLIB’s average of £80,000 gives £360 a day and £16,560 for one day a week (our arithmetic).

These are a floor for comparison.

They are not what a fractional client services director charges, and no source we can cite says what that is.

The quotes you receive are the market.

10/ the other routes

Permanent, interim or fractional: the three ways to fill the seat

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see client services director salary for every source in full.

An interim covers the seat full-time for a fixed period on a day rate; see interim client services director salary.

A fractional director is paid only for the days bought.

11/ questions

Fractional client services director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional client services director.

A fractional client services director has no salary from the client: they are paid a day rate or retainer. No independent UK source publishes that rate. As a comparison, ADLIB’s £110,000 London and South East average ÷ 220 working days is £500 a day (our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor, not a market rate).
From the permanent salary. ADLIB’s 2026 guides give £90,000–£150,000 in London and the South East and £65,000–£100,000 in the South West, the North and the East Midlands, bonuses included. We divide by 220 working days, round to the nearest £10, then multiply by 1, 2 or 3 days a week for 46 weeks. All of it is our arithmetic.
At £500 a day, one day a week for 46 weeks is £23,000 (our arithmetic). Outside London and the South East, at £360 a day, it is £16,560. The quote a candidate gives you is the real figure.
The day rate times the days. No source we can cite publishes the rate, so compare each quote with the pro-rata figures: £410–£680 a day in London and the South East, £300–£450 in the South West, the North and the East Midlands (our arithmetic). We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
Scope the book the seat looks after, count the days it needs, and ask each candidate for day rate, days and notice. Settle IR35 status before you go to market. See fractional client services director jobs.
No. A day rate carries no holiday pay, benefits or employer pension; the person funds those from their own income. An employer pays into a workplace pension only for an employee.
It decides how the fees are taxed. Status turns on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small private-sector client, the person’s own company decides (HMRC).
If the person’s company is registered for VAT, yes: VAT is added to each invoice. Ask whether a quote includes it.
