Chief customer officer salary · base, bonus and package, 2026
What a chief customer officer earns, in base, bonus and package
A chief customer officer salary in 2026 runs from £130,000 to £260,000, with a median of £180,000, on Ultimate Asset’s survey of SaaS and martech businesses.
Live Digital, a SaaS and fintech recruiter, puts the base at £130,000 to £200,000 or more.
Few salary guides list the seat at all, so most other figures describe the customer success and customer service leaders who report into it.
Base is only part of the package: bonus, pension, employer’s National Insurance and often equity sit on top.
When you hire a chief customer officer through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Chief Customer Officer brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
What a chief customer officer does, and what sets the pay
A chief customer officer owns what happens after the sale: onboarding, service, support, customer success, renewals and the voice of the customer.
The seat joins up teams that otherwise each hold a piece of the customer.
In a subscription business it answers for retention and expansion revenue.
Watch the abbreviation.
CCO also stands for chief commercial officer, the seat that owns revenue, pricing and go-to-market, and salary tables often mix the two.
Every figure on this page is for the customer seat or, where labelled, the customer roles below it.
For the commercial seat, see chief commercial officer salary.
Seniority sets the pay first.
Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey of SaaS and martech businesses puts a head of customer success at £65,000–£100,000 (median £85,000) and a director of customer success at £80,000–£130,000 (median £105,000).
A VP of customer success sits at £120,000–£210,000 (median £155,000), and a chief customer officer at £130,000–£260,000 (median £180,000).
The title alone tells you little.
Robert Half’s 2026 range for a head of customer success runs from £44,250 to £55,750, median £51,500.
Robert Walters’ London survey puts the same title at £103,000–£165,000 in a business of 50 to 250 staff.
Team size, scope and the revenue the seat answers for explain the gap, so read the remit before the title.
There is no chartered qualification for the seat.
The best-known credential is the CCXP, whose exam is based on the CXPA CX Framework, built from a job task analysis of what customer experience professionals do.
02/ scope
How to set the pay when you hire a chief customer officer
1. Scope the seat before the salary
Write down what the role owns: service and support only, or retention, renewals and expansion revenue as well.
Say how large the team is and who reports in.
In financial services, the FCA’s Consumer Duty requires firms to put their customers’ needs first, which raises the stakes on the seat.
A complaint the firm does not resolve can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which can put things right where a firm has not treated a customer fairly.
Outside financial services, consumer protection law now sits in the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024.
2. Choose the route
A permanent appointment suits a business that needs a customer chief every day: hire a chief customer officer on that basis.
For part of the week, hire a fractional chief customer officer.
If the need is director-level customer success rather than a C-suite seat, hire a fractional customer success director.
We also recruit interims for full-time cover over a fixed period.
3. Set base, bonus and equity together
Live Digital describes the chief customer officer package as equity-weighted.
In a growth business, HMRC’s Enterprise Management Incentives are the tax-advantaged share option scheme most smaller companies look at first.
Tie any bonus to measures the seat controls, such as retention, renewals and complaints.
4. Agree how the seat will be judged
Pick the measures before the offer.
The Institute of Customer Service publishes the UK Customer Satisfaction Index twice a year, scoring experience, complaints handling, customer ethos, emotional connection and ethics by sector.
It gives a board an outside view to set targets against.
For the complaints process itself, ISO 10002 sets out international guidelines the seat can audit against.
What we do on a customer-chief brief
We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary customer leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

04/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional chief customer officer. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional chief customer officer holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim chief customer officer. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim chief customer officer takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent chief customer officer after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim chief customer officer holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent chief customer officer.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
05/ rates by stage
Chief customer officer salary by source, seniority and place
Permanent pay as each publisher states it, all 2026. Ultimate Asset surveys SaaS and martech businesses and gives the lowest and highest data points it found, with a median. Robert Walters’ London figures are basic salaries from advertised roles, with the mean as its average. Robert Half publishes starting salary projections. Only Ultimate Asset and Live Digital list the chief customer officer; the other rows are the customer seats below it. All four publishers are recruiters.
06/ economics
What the salary costs the business, beyond the base
A salary is not the whole cost of an employee.
For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds).
On Ultimate Asset’s £180,000 median, that is £26,250 a year (our arithmetic).
Under automatic enrolment, the employer must also pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings (GOV.UK).
Many schemes pay more.
The bonus is pay too.
HMRC treats a cash bonus as earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base.

Chief customer officer salary UK: what the two benchmarks measure
Two publishers give a chief customer officer salary UK figure for 2026, and both are recruiters.
Ultimate Asset’s range, £130,000–£260,000 with a median of £180,000, draws on its own hires across SaaS and martech businesses and on wider market data.
Live Digital’s base band, £130,000–£200,000 or more, comes from its 2025–26 guide to customer success pay in SaaS and technology businesses.
Both describe technology businesses.
Outside them, no source we can cite publishes a band for the seat, so start from the remit: the size of the customer team and the revenue the role answers for.
09/ average chief customer officer salary
Average chief customer officer salary, and the seats around it
Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey gives the nearest thing to an average chief customer officer salary: a median of £180,000 in SaaS and martech businesses.
The same survey puts the median for a VP of customer success at £155,000, for a director of customer success at £105,000 and for a head of customer success at £85,000.
Read the median as one view of one sector.
No source we can cite publishes figures for the seat outside technology businesses, so weigh the size of the team and the revenue the role answers for.
10/ chief customer officer salary london
Chief customer officer salary London, and the seats that report into it
No source we can cite publishes a chief customer officer salary London figure for the seat itself.
Robert Walters’ 2026 London survey covers the seats that report into it.
A head of customer success is at £103,000–£165,000 in a business of 50 to 250 staff, with a Robert Walters average of £136,900, and £83,000–£186,000 in a larger one.
On the same survey, a customer success director in London is at £83,000–£124,000 in a mid-sized business and £62,000–£145,000 in a large one.
A head of customer service is at £114,000–£145,000 and £93,000–£165,000.
Robert Half puts a London head of customer success lower, at £60,250–£75,750 with a median of £70,000, against £51,500 nationally.
These figures describe the seat below, not the chief customer officer’s own pay.
Use them to check that a London package sits above the people who will report to it.

A permanent salary buys a customer chief every day, with notice on both sides.
An interim is paid by the day for full-time cover over a fixed period.
A fractional customer chief works part of the week on a day rate or retainer; see fractional chief customer officer jobs for that route.
No UK source we can cite publishes an interim or a fractional chief customer officer day rate, so ask each candidate for theirs.
