What an interim CMO earns, by the day and by mandate

An interim CMO salary is a day rate, not a salary.

Exec Capital’s 2026 executive salary guide puts the interim CMO day rate at £700–£2,000.

Its interim CMO page splits that by business: £800–£1,400 at scale-ups with up to £30m revenue, £1,200–£2,000 at mid-market and private-equity-backed firms, and £1,800–£3,000+ at large corporates and FTSE-listed companies.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.

When you hire an interim CMO through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

On the board: interim and marketing leadership roles

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Interim CMO brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

Interim CMO day rate: what sets it

The day rate is the real unit of interim pay.

An interim CMO steps into the seat full-time or near full-time for a fixed term, which Exec Capital puts at three to nine months, and is usually paid for each day worked, through their own company, with no bonus scheme and no employer pension.

Some interims take a fixed-term employment contract instead.

The size and type of business set most of the rate.

Exec Capital publishes £800–£1,400 a day at scale-ups and growth businesses with up to £30m revenue, £1,200–£2,000 at mid-market and private-equity-backed firms, and £1,800–£3,000+ at large corporates and FTSE-listed companies.

B2B technology sits at £1,000–£1,800, which it says reflects the premium for technology sector marketing talent.

The mandate matters too.

Across the interim C-suite, Exec Capital’s 2026 guide runs from £600–£800 a day for smaller businesses or less complex mandates to £1,500–£3,500 for FTSE, major crisis or turnaround assignments.

Exec Capital says straightforward cover during a permanent search sits at the lower end of each range, and transformation, turnaround or post-acquisition integration well above it.

These are a recruiter’s published bands, not survey results.

For a market-wide cross-check, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907 across all functions and £1,004 in the private sector.

For what the seat itself covers, see what a CMO does.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim CMO

1. Write the mandate as outcomes

Say what must be true at the end: a function stabilised, a repositioning delivered, a permanent successor recruited.

Give the budget, the team and the term.

A mandate with a hard deadline is interim work; an ongoing need for a few days a week is fractional.

2. Price the mandate, not the title

Use the band for your business type, not a general average.

Cover during a search sits lower in the band; a transformation or turnaround sits higher.

Agree the day rate, the expected days a week and the notice terms in writing.

3. Settle IR35 before the start date

If you are a medium or large client, you decide the interim’s status under the off-payroll working rules (IR35) and issue a status determination statement.

HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax tool can help.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

Interim CMO salary day rates by business and mandate

Day rates published by Exec Capital, a recruiter, and the IIM’s 2026 survey of interim managers (all functions). The last two rows are our arithmetic: a day rate times days billed, before the interim’s own costs. They are a comparison, not a salary.

Interim pay against a salary: why the numbers do not compare one for one

A day rate times 220 working days looks large: £154,000 to £440,000 on Exec Capital’s interim CMO band, by our arithmetic.

Few interims bill every working day.

The IIM’s 2026 survey found an average of 148 days billed a year and an average gap of 3.2 months between assignments, which lasted 10 months on average.

The interim also funds what an employer would: pension, holidays, sick days, insurance and the time between mandates.

A permanent CMO’s base salary has those costs on top.

Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent CMO is £147,000 in base pay, before bonus, pension and benefits.

See CMO salary for the permanent figures.

Tax status follows how the engagement runs.

Under the off-payroll working rules, if a medium or large client decides the interim is employed for tax purposes, the fee is taxed like pay and the deemed employer pays employer’s National Insurance, which is 15% above £5,000 a year for 2026 to 2027 (HMRC).

The IIM’s survey found an average of £949 a day for interims outside IR35 and £830 inside.

An interim trading through their own company may also need to register for VAT.

07/ interim chief marketing officer salary

Interim chief marketing officer salary: by type of mandate

An interim chief marketing officer salary is quoted as a day rate because the work is a fixed-term mandate.

Exec Capital names the common ones: go-to-market leadership for growth or a new market, a sudden departure during a critical commercial period, private-equity investment or post-acquisition acceleration, a marketing function that has not scaled with the business, a brand repositioning, and cover through a permanent search.

Rates follow the stakes.

Exec Capital says cover during a permanent search sits at the lower end of each range, and transformation, turnaround or post-acquisition integration higher.

Across the interim C-suite, Exec Capital’s 2026 guide runs to £1,500–£3,500 a day for FTSE, major crisis or turnaround assignments.

Marketing has a chartered professional body: the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Membership is worth asking about; it is not a requirement for an interim mandate.

If the need is ongoing and part-week rather than full-time and fixed-term, see fractional CMO salary and part-time CMO.

08/ questions

Interim CMO pay questions FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim CMO.

An interim CMO is paid a day rate, not a salary. Exec Capital’s 2026 guide puts the interim CMO day rate at £700–£2,000. Its interim CMO page gives £800–£1,400 at scale-ups, £1,200–£2,000 at mid-market and private-equity-backed firms, and £1,800–£3,000+ at large corporates and FTSE-listed companies.
Exec Capital publishes £700–£2,000 a day for an interim CMO in 2026, and £1,000–£1,800 in B2B technology. Across all functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector (IIM).
There is no annual salary. By our arithmetic, Exec Capital’s £700–£2,000 band comes to £154,000–£440,000 if every one of 220 working days is billed, before the interim’s own costs. The IIM’s 2026 survey found interims bill 148 days a year on average, so treat the 220-day figure as a ceiling.
Budget from the band for your business: Exec Capital publishes £800–£1,400 a day at scale-ups and £1,200–£2,000 at mid-market and private-equity-backed firms. Multiply by the days a week and the weeks in the term. If the engagement falls inside IR35, the deemed employer also pays employer’s National Insurance. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Write the mandate as outcomes, with the budget, the team and the term. Use the day-rate band for your business type. Settle IR35 status before the start date. See interim CMO recruitment and interim CMO.
It changes how the fee is taxed. If a medium or large client decides the engagement is inside the off-payroll working rules, tax and National Insurance are deducted as if it were pay. The IIM’s 2026 survey found an average of £949 a day outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
Exec Capital puts a typical interim CMO term at three to nine months. Across all functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey found an average assignment of 10 months.
