Interim marketing manager salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim marketing manager earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim marketing manager is paid a day rate, not a salary.

The median contract day rate for a marketing manager in UK job ads is £429, from 42 rates tracked by IT Jobs Watch in the six months to 5 October 2026.

In London, Robert Walters puts the PAYE contract rate at £350–£900 a day, with an average of £630.

Morgan McKinley’s London bands run from £250 to £600 a day, by sector and experience.

The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary or employer pension behind it when the manager works through their own company.

When you brief us on an interim marketing manager, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim marketing leadership roles on the board

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Interim Marketing Manager brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How an interim marketing manager is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim or contract marketing manager holds the seat full-time for a defined period: cover for parental leave or a departure, a product launch, a rebrand or a campaign season.

The business pays for the days worked, through an agency’s payroll or to the manager’s own company.

At manager level the published figures are contract day rates.

IT Jobs Watch tracks them in job ads; Robert Walters and Morgan McKinley publish them in their 2026 salary guides.

Robert Walters labels its rates PAYE: the contractor is paid through payroll, not through their own company.

A contractor paid through an agency is an agency worker: after 12 weeks in the job they qualify for the same rights as someone employed directly, including equal pay, automatic pension enrolment and paid annual leave.

One who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns.

Either way, the day rate is not take-home pay.

Across all interim functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

Its members are mostly senior interim managers, so read those as context for the pattern of work, not as this seat’s rate.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim marketing manager

1. Define the deliverable and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: the launch, the campaign season, the cover to a named return date.

A defined end makes the cost a number you can approve.

The campaigns still have to meet the CAP Code and the ICO’s direct marketing rules, so ask how the candidate checks them.

2. Decide how they will be engaged

Through an agency on PAYE, or through their own company.

If your business is medium or large and the engagement is through their company, you make the IR35 status determination and give them your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the record to the work

Ask for campaigns they ran in a business like yours and the results they reported.

A launch needs someone who has run one.

The National Careers Service sets out what a marketing manager does day to day, and CIM qualifications are one signal of formal training.

If the gap is leadership rather than delivery, look one level up: see interim head of marketing salary and interim marketing director salary.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent marketers, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.

How much of the week does the work fill?
Is there a fixed end or a programme?
Does the seat sit on the board for years?
Is the need now, or can it wait for a search?

The route · Fractional

A fractional marketing manager.

The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.

A fractional marketing manager holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.

Day rates and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination when the worker supplies their services through their own company; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

08/ interim marketing manager day rate

Interim marketing manager day rate by sector and experience

The interim marketing manager day rate rises with experience and with the sector’s pay.

Morgan McKinley puts a London financial services contractor at £300–£350 a day with up to three years’ experience, £350–£450 with three to five, and £450–£600 with more than five.

Investment management pays about the same; commerce and industry in London runs from £250 to £475.

Robert Walters’ London PAYE rates are wider.

Its marketing-team table runs from £350 to £900 a day, with an average of £630.

Its business-support table, for the same title, gives £300–£450 and an average of £360.

Across the UK, IT Jobs Watch puts the median in contract job ads at £429 a day, with the middle half between £360 and £500.

The sample is 42 rates, so treat it as a guide.

Outside London the median is £440.

09/ interim marketing manager salary

Interim marketing manager salary, annualised

An interim marketing manager salary is a figure people search for, but no interim is paid one.

To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.

At the £429 median, 220 days would bill £94,380.

At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £63,492.

Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

A full month of cover, at about 22 working days, comes to £9,438 at the £429 median and £13,860 at Robert Walters’ £630 London average (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost.

Out of it the contractor funds their own holidays, pension and the gaps between assignments.

For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent marketing manager is £46,750 in base salary, before employer’s National Insurance and pension.

See marketing manager salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.

10/ the other routes

Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a full-time marketing manager for a fixed period.

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see marketing manager salary.

If the work fills only part of the week, a fractional manager on agreed days may suit better; no source we trust publishes a fractional rate for this seat, so see fractional marketing manager jobs for how to scope it, and fractional marketing manager salary for the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic).

Interim marketing manager salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim marketing manager.

IT Jobs Watch puts the median contract day rate for a marketing manager at £429, from 42 rates in UK job ads in the six months to 5 October 2026. Robert Walters puts a London PAYE contract rate at £350–£900, with an average of £630. Morgan McKinley’s London bands run from £250 to £600 by sector and experience.
An interim marketing manager is paid a day rate rather than a salary. At the £429 median, 220 days would bill £94,380 and the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed would bill £63,492 (our arithmetic). That is gross income, before the contractor’s own costs, pension and tax.
Robert Walters puts a London marketing manager on contract at £350–£900 a day (PAYE), with an average of £630, in its marketing-team table. Morgan McKinley puts London financial services at £300–£600 a day and commerce and industry at £250–£475, by years of experience.
Define the deliverable and its end date, decide whether the engagement runs through an agency on PAYE or through the manager’s own company, settle IR35 status first, and check the candidate’s record on comparable work. We send a shortlist of 3–5 with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
The day rate times the days. At the £429 median, a month of about 22 working days is £9,438; at Robert Walters’ £630 London average it is £13,860 (our arithmetic). We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
As long as the deliverable needs. No source publishes an assignment length for marketing managers. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A contractor paid through an agency’s payroll is taxed through PAYE. One working through their own company is assessed under IR35: a medium or large client makes the status determination, and a small private-sector client leaves it to the contractor’s company (HMRC).
