Interim creative director salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim creative director earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim creative director is paid a day rate, not a salary.
Creative recruiters publish these as freelance day rates: Represent’s 2026 survey puts a creative director at £475–£750 a day, depending on the discipline, and an advertising creative director at £550–£650.
Gabriele’s 2026 guide puts a graphic-design creative director at £550–£650 a day in its average band.
The rate covers the days worked, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you hire an interim creative director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Interim Creative Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
How an interim creative director is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim creative director holds the creative seat for a defined period: a departure, a rebrand, a launch, a pitch or the months before a permanent hire starts.
They are booked by the day and invoice the business for the days worked.
No source we can cite publishes a band labelled “interim” for this seat.
The creative recruiters publish freelance day rates for the creative director instead, and those are the figures on this page.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim creative director
1. Define the mandate and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a campaign out of the door, a rebrand signed off, a team steadied, a handover to a permanent hire.
A mandate with an end date is easier to price and easier to judge.
A rebrand that creates a new name is protected by registering it as a trade mark, and any campaign must follow the CAP Code the Advertising Standards Authority enforces.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Agree who owns the work
A freelancer working under a contract for services usually keeps the copyright in what they make unless the contract assigns it (Intellectual Property Office).
Write the assignment into the contract before the first day.
What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent creative and marketing leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
If the seat needs a permanent owner after the interim, see creative director salary for the permanent bands.
03/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional creative director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional creative director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim creative director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim creative director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent creative director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim creative director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent creative director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
04/ rates by stage
Interim creative director salary day rates by discipline and source
Freelance day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Represent’s rates are all on an outside-IR35 basis; Gabriele’s state no IR35 basis and are labelled low, average and higher by Gabriele. Both are recruiters. Neither labels a band “interim”. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not creative work alone.
05/ economics
Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
Represent states its freelance rates on an outside-IR35 basis.
Across all functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

07/ interim creative director day rate
Interim creative director day rate by discipline
The interim creative director day rate moves with the discipline.
Represent puts a creative director at £475–£600 a day in design, £500–£600 in art direction and £550–£650 in advertising.
Digital design and motion pay most, at £600–£750.
Seniority adds to it.
In advertising, Represent puts a group creative director at £550–£700 a day and an executive creative director at £700 or more.
All of Represent’s freelance rates are on an outside-IR35 basis.
08/ freelance creative director day rate
Freelance creative director day rate in Gabriele’s three bands
Gabriele’s 2026 guide gives the freelance creative director day rate in three bands.
For a graphic-design creative director, Gabriele’s low band is £450–£550, its average band £550–£650 and its higher band £650 or more.
For a digital-design creative director, the bands are £450, £500–£600 and £650 or more.
Gabriele describes its figures as indicative, drawn from current vacancies, market insight and its own recruitment work in London and the wider UK.
It states no IR35 basis for them.
09/ the year
Interim creative director salary, annualised
No interim is paid a salary.
To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.
At £550–£650 a day, 220 days would bill £121,000–£143,000.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rates bill £81,400–£96,200.
Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and £550–£650 a day, comes to £12,100–£14,300 (our arithmetic).
That is the client’s cost.
The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, Represent puts a permanent advertising creative director at £100,000–£130,000 in salary, before workplace pension contributions and employer’s National Insurance.
The IPA, the professional body for advertising agencies, runs the Effectiveness Awards, which recognise advertising with proven results: a fair test of a creative leader’s record.
